Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

What's the work?

The Lord Of The Ringsthe Rings Of Power is a recent Amazon series set in the Second age of Middle Earth. Sauron is gone, having been defeated with his Master Morgoth. Galadriel, Lady of the Noldor, believes evil has not died, and is bent on hunting down any remaining traces of the Dark Lord who slew her brother..

And evil is indeed rising. The orcs have returned. One of them? The leader of the orcs: Adar, the "Father."

Who is Adar?

Long ago, Adar was an elf like any other. With many of his fellows, he was taken by the darkest powers. Tortured horrifically with his brethren to create the orcs, Adar was left mutilated, no longer an elf like others, but not like a later orc. Revered by them, they call him "Father," and he began to see them as his own children. Growing disillusioned with Sauron, Adar opted to rebel.

Leading a force of elves in Middle Earth, Adar starts a plan of conquest to unearth the mountain Orodruin. Steadily taking over numerous areas of the South, and enslaving the elves found,a slave rebellion mortally wounds the chief orc overseer. Adar arrives and mercy kills him, before sending the sole remaining elf to the realms of man with a an ultimatum: surrender.

Adar proceeds to direct his orcs to cut off vital points strategically and reveals himself to human villages. Not happy at being compared to/mistaken for Sauron, Adar declares himself their ruler and has the human blacksmith Waldreg show his loyalty via murder of another human.

Adar forces the humans into his army, and uses them as shields for the enemy. Captured by Galadriel and the human warrior Halbrand, Adar claims he usurped and killed Sauron...however, Adar planned ahead and left Waldreg with Sauron's sword. Using it?Waldreg unearths Orodruin the mountain and triggers an explosion.

Adar uses the confusion to escape and is named king of the new land, a blackened wasteland for the orcs to thrive. Known as...

Mordor.

Mitigating issues?

Shockingly for a villain among the orcs, none. Adar is charismatic, strong, bold, and intelligent with genius strategic intellect. His schemes are excellent, he plans ahead for everything and he's only beaten temporarily, while alsays bouncing back. Like...a lot.

Adar is smart. No doubt about it. But he's also shockingly complex for an LOTR villain. He's definitely evil, with tons of death at his hands, and sacrificing humans for his plans, slavery...

But he truly loves the orcs as children. He was taken, tortured until nothing elvish in him remained. As a result, he want a land his people can call their own. And he truly means it. He loathes Sauron for his sadism and cruelty.

Conclusion?

EASY yes.

What's the work?

Twig is the third doorstopper novel from Wildbow, author of the infamously long and dark hit web novel Worm. Set in 1921, in an alternate universe where Frankenstein's Monster became king of Great Britain and effectively took over the world, the series follows Sylvester and his fellow Lambsbridge Orphans, a group of young experiments and artificial lifeforms who quickly find themselves being sent off as child soldiers to quell the stirring embers of rebellion against the Crown Empire. Along the way they find themselves rebelling as well, coming into conflict with both the Academies of science behind these leaps in biopunk technology and the extended family of sadistic, inhuman nobles at the top of of the Crown.

Who is Sanguine?

Sanguine is one of the four "Humors," a group of Academy experiments who went rogue and turned mercenary when their projects were deemed failures. Each of them has enhanced senses, with Sanguine's project focusing on sight: he has massive, bug-like eyes that can see things in high definition from miles away, making him the natural sharpshooter and sniper of the group.

The Humors end up joining with a rebel leader named Cynthia, who has recently taken over the city of Whitney and is preparing for war with the encroaching Crown forces. This naturally puts them at odds with Sy and the Lambs, who are sent to infiltrate the city and stop the Humors from turning the tide of the battle. The other three are slowly killed off as the arc progresses, but Sanguine avoids direct confrontation in favor of sniping his enemies from rooftops, almost killing Sy and picking off enemy officers on the battlefield so his companions can sneak behind their lines.

When the Lambs infiltrate Whitney a second time to eliminate Cynthia, Sanguine is the first to catch on to their presence and wildly shoots into the sky, alerting everyone in the city that their enemies are here before escorting one of their high value targets to safety. From there he works to track them down as they slip into the night, remaining utterly unfazed by their attempts to kill him or psychologically torture him with the deaths of his teammates. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, the incompetence of the other soldiers in the city leads to the Lambs following them to Cynthia's safehouse, and despite Sanguine's warnings, they successfully scar her with a grenade volley before beating a hasty retreat.

Fast forward a little, and Sy and his fellow Lamb Jessie defect from the Crown and become fugitives. Sanguine hears this news and decides to get some payback for his fallen friends, assembling a team of bounty hunters to track them through a plague-infested city. He once again uses his enhanced eyesight to snipe at them from high vantage points, constantly repositioning himself to keep them within his field of view and using smoke signals to alert his minions down below as to the pair's movements. There's a rival bounty hunter team also on the pair's trail, but Sanguine bribes one of their minions to turn on them, and when the two groups seem poised to split the bounty, Sanguine goes to a vantage point from behind them in an effort to mow down his opponents.

Long story short, Sanguine catches Jessie and arranges for a ceasefire upon noticing she's infected by plague. He taunts Sy a bit before announcing that he'll give up the chase; the only reason he even bothered going after them was because, even though he didn't care for them that much, he still felt that he owed it to the other Humors to avenge their deaths. Seeing Sy in such utter despair over his friend is vengeance enough, in his opinion. With that, he bids them ado and saunters off into the night.

Jessie, of course, survives, as Sy has recently figured out how to remove the plague. It requires a lot of... cutting... but she just barely survives, and Sanguine is none the wiser as he dips out of the rest of the story.

Any mitigating features?

Aside from his "vengeance" being undone—and even then, it was a recent, at that point uncurable plague that Sy only "cured" through a rush job of a back-alley surgery using his best guesses at what would work, so I won't fault him for thinking he had that in the bag—Sanguine always makes his mark as a level-headed and affable enemy. He's constantly staying six steps ahead of his targets, and he's always keeping them nervous and on their toes whenever they know he's on them. Minor character overall, but he's efficient and badass with the small role he's got.

Here we go!

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet spoilers abound, and probably the most confusing EP I will have to do for this series. Not only are these version exclusive characters who happen to have the same role as each other, but they are revealed to be Dead All Along by the climax, being impersonated by an AI. However, despite their posthumous status, they still act as the closest there is to a main villain.

Who is Professor Sada/Turo?

The cause of many crisis for many a bisexual, Professor Sada is exclusive to Scarlet and Turo is exclusive to Violet. Of course, they still take the same role no matter what. And again, they're both dead. Rip bozos.

So anyway, years before the start of the games, the professor and a research team ventured down into the Great Crater of Paldea in order to study the mysterious Terastal phenomenon (this games' gimmick mechanic), and using their research, developed the Tera orb so that it could be used in Pokémon battles. Despite this giving them many a grant, the professor was not yet satisfied. They needed to study more and create a paradise where they and their family could live happily.

The professor ventured back into the Crater with a smaller team to perform more research, this time with the goal of harnessing the Tera crystals powers to create a time machine. Their backers fretted and cut their funding, but they pressed onward. Not even their team leaving or even now being a parent was enough, a circumstance that left the son, Arven, with severe abandonment issues. The time machine was finished and a portal to the past/future was created and a Koraidon/Miraidon was brought to the present from it. To keep the Pokémon safe, the professor moved their research full time to Area Zero, leaving Arwen to fend for himself.

Without anyone else to help, the professor created an AI to act as an assistant, and together they brought a second Koraidon/Miraidon to the present. However, this one proved to be hostile. It fought with the first, more friendly, one and eventually made an attempt on its life, the professor sacrificed their life to save the friendlier mon.

Despite their untimely death, the time machine was not shut down, as the professor wished it to keep running in order for a paradise to be born. However, the paradox Pokémon retrieved from it were growing numerous, and if unleashed from the Crater would overwhelm the region and destroy its ecosystem. The AI realized that the professor did not care for such consequences, but found the result to be illogical.

In the present day, the AI lured the player character down to the Area Zero lab in order to shut off the time machine, revealing everything once they arrived. However, the professor left numerous fail safes to keep the machine running, including taking control of the AI to do battle against the player in the event of a shut down attempt. With the AI beaten and the Arwen, Nemona, and Penny arriving for assistance, it was revealed that the professor left even more fail safes: in particular a lock function that shuts off all Poke Balls not registered to the professor and the more aggressive Koraidon/Miraidon being unleashed against the group. Luckily, the player had the first Koraidon/Miraidon in a ball registered to the professor and used it to defeat the second one. But that was still not enough, and the AI through itself into the machine in order to shut it down once and for all, but not before letting Arwen know that their real parent truly cared for them.

Remember: the best stories in Pokémon come from bad parenting.

Magnificent?

The fact they are able to affect the plot posthumously through an insane amount of foresight and making a complex fail safe system to take out any intruder says a lot. Character wise, their goal is a noble one, to create a paradise for them and their family. They truly care about their son even if they suck at parenting. And finally, they care about Pokémon, enough to sacrifice their life for one.

Bastard?

Like I said, bad parent and leaving child to fend for themself. Plus, they were willing to let the entire region's ecosystem collapse just to create their paradise. And their security system almost kills the main group, including their own son. But it's more out of a sense of apathy rather than active maliciousness, so that restrains them.

Apologies for my EP being longer than others, I am still an essay writer at heart.

Finally glad to be back! I've actually got an EP ready for the occasion, and it's someone I've been asking around for to boot.

What's The Work?

Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People is an episodic adventure game developed by Telltale Games, based of the popular Homestar Runner series and staring resident Breakout Character, Strong Bad. The series goes over his life living in the ever-eccentric Free Country, USA as he tries (and fails) to make a name for himself while putting up with his neighbors, especially the alleged main character Homestar Runner himself.

Episode 4 actually takes place in a Show Within a Show, as it depicts the finally released Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective, an entree in Strong Brad's homemade film series about a rowdy detective and his partners, Renaldo and Dangeresque Too?. When a seemingly straightforward job involving saving the rainforest ends with the quest giver, Cutsey Buttons (Marzipan) getting kidnapped, Dangeresque seemingly faces an evil Dangeresque Too?, having apparently turned evil and calling himself "Uzi Bazooka". The truth, however, is slightly more complicated...

Who is Craig? What's He Done?

So you know the little yellow guy seemingly acting as Uzi's right hand The Cheat? Turns out he's the real mastermind, out to kill Dangeresque and his crew to make it big as a criminal.

So basically, Craig kidnaps the real Dangeresque Too? and builds a robotic duplicate to impersonate him, causing Dangeresque to think that Too? has betrayed him. He then has Uzi kidnap Cutesy Buttons while Dangeresque is trying to save the rainforest, leaving behind a video that claims Uzi was the man behind the kidnapping. When Dangeresque manages to apparently track where Cutesy is being held, with "help" from his long-lost father Dadgeresque (Senor Cardgage lol), Uzi reveals that while he was looking for him, he and Craig had Renaldo kidnapped and placed in their space station, and has their invincible minion Killingyouguy chase off Dangeresque, "killing" Dangeresque in the process.

Dangeresque then builds a rocket to fly to the space station, where he encounters a chained-up Renaldo and Dangeresque Too?, much to his confusion. It's also immediately revealed that Uzi Bazooka was a robot duplicate, causing Craig to come forth and fess up that he was behind everything. He then reveals that this whole thing's been an elaborate goose chase to lure Dangeresque and friends onto the station so that he can blow it up with them trapped on it, and as a result become famous from being the guy to kill the world renowned detective. He then has Uzi guard the door while he Craig makes a break for the escape pod, managing to fight off a chasing Dangeresque Too? in the process. Ultimately, Dangeresque manages to defeat Uzi and kick Craig out of an airlock to his doom, while he and Too? barley make it out alive. After the film abruptly stops, Strong Bad reveals to a viewing Coach Z that Renaldo was killed in the explosion, meaning that Craig at least got one of them.

How Smart Is He?

Alright, so for an absurdly silly video game about an intentionally botched film? Craig should be fine. Dude masterminds an elaborate plot to lead Dangeresque and friends to their doom, builds a flawless replica of Dangeresque Too?, and stays one step of the protagonists while kidnapping all of them while Dangeresque is distracted. He's only really defeated by some quick reflexes on Dangeresque's part, and even then he manages to get Renaldo killed anyways. The competition is literally nonexistent, so he's perfectly fine there lol.

So one thing that made me hesitant on posting him was the film's massive Stylistic Suck. Every prop is blatantly cardboard, actors regularly flub their lines, the "car chase" has the car not moving lmao... I was wondering if it would distract from Craig's planning. That said, after discussing this with a number of people, we basically agreed that, not only have we gotten candidates from much worse, unintentionally bad movies, the work has so much damn fun with the fact that it comes off more as charming than anything. Helps that the man himself isn't really affected by technical issues due to coming in late.

Is He Bad?

Hell yes he is! Kidnapping a number of innocents, kills Dadgeresque, plans on blowing up Dangeresque and friends, he's pure fuckin evil man!

Okay seriously though, none of it is taken seriously or really crosses a line into being too bad, so he's got this under the bag.

Overall?

So how's he looking?

Wow. A lot to catch up on without voting.

Namor is rightfully angry when attacking Wakanda and Ramonda getting killed is not something he fully intended to happen in the process—at least not something he was petty or vicious about. He doesn't intend to torture or brutalize anyone, he wants to make it a point to make a power play as well avenge one of his own.

The Season 2 announcement for Wednesday was a little more than a week ago I think, so we only JUST found out it's coming back. Also, the events of the season even without the lead into Season 2 ("I know the suspense must be killing you" haha) is still pretty self-contained. It's fair to judge Season 1 totally by itself right now.

Fester definitely proves clever enough based on everything we see as well and once Wednesday herself has enough votes, Bull gave me permission to post that writeup.

Wow. Dark Passenger Billy is definitely not who I thought would be the first Scream MB. Haha. I wondered at first if he was capable of having agency since he's in Sam's head and not the actual guy, but since he's presented as his own person, it's probably fair though.

You're clearly supposed to associate him with the original Billy, but because he's clearly written different enough, I suppose he can be judged on his own merits. And yeah, the sins of the past that kept the original from this would not hold this one back.

So yeah, aside from accidentally voting on Namor early and being the second person to do an EP with Fester, I recap that I also read both the Wednesday EP on Wednesday and the Scream 5 EP on Ghost Billy too.

Gonna read the EP on VG Kingpin pretty soon.

Two potentials from Glass Onion that I may be working on with Lighty and if Lighty does a certain someone from a certain recent DC movie, I'm gonna do that writeup. Also, Snowy66 and I are teamed on Violent Night with me doing the writeups there too. Still got the last three Pirates candidates with both Bull and Snowy as well.
