Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Ok. Draft for Tigellinus. Because I am leaving and will be away for two weeks, I will put in drafts a little early; my plane is leaving in two hours; that's last time I have access to Wifi.

  • Quo Vadis: Tigellinus is a prefect of Praetorian Guard and Nero's right-hand man who follows every Nero's order without question, no matter how immoral or cruel. In fact, Tigellinus likes to use Nero's mental instability as a way to get to give an immoral order so that Tigellinus could enact it. He likes to pick beatiful Christian women for Nero so that Nero could use them as his sex slaves. When Tigellinus finds out Nero has fantasy of burning Rome so history could write poems about him, Tigellinus incites Nero to actually order it which Tigellinus himself then does with his soldiers. Afterwards, him and Nero frame Christians for it. This results in Christians being massively rounded up and thrown into the arena where they are brutally killed in many different ways (such as being crucified or torn apart by animals). When Tigellinus finds out his friend, the philisopher Chilon, has converted to Christianity, he has his tongue ripped out. And when finally whole Rome turns against Nero, Tigellinus abandons him too, showing that he had no Undying Loyalty to psychopathic Manchild emperor; he just is a sadist who took pleasure in every cruelty he committed.

Happy April Fools, y'all. Apologies for the previous EP, here's the real legit one. I'm giving y'all the English dub.

What’s the Work?

Pushed to the Limit is a 1992 action movie, and the first of a few action vanity vehicles starring former wrestler Mimi Lesseos, who wrote, stared, and produced this one.

Mimi plays... Mimi, a pro wrestler who finds out that her young brother Johnny has been killed by some drug dealers. Finding out that he dealer who had him killed also runs a deadly fighting tournament, Mimi trains up in order to take down the tournament's champion, going undercover to put an end to the dealer's games. She will be "pushed to the limit."®

Who is He?

Harry Lee is a Chinese drug dealer known for being one of the most dangerous criminals in L.A., worse than the mafia.

What has he done?

Dealing primarily with drugs alongside prostitution and extortion, Lee has one of his men and Mimi's younger brother, Johnny, killed not only for stealing some of his coke, but for also telling a kinda racist joke, even having Mimi’s lover cop Nick critically wounded for being at the scene.

But Lee also has an underground fighting tournament called the Kumite, where people partake in martial art battles to the death. With many dying in his arena for a bloodthirsty paying audience, mostly at the hands of his prized champion Inga, Lee has Mimi’s friend Terri enter the tournament for money.

Upon finding out Mimi’s true identity after many failed attempts at trying to seduce her to be his plaything, Lee has her mentor Vern kidnapped to be tortured, and forces her to watch as Terri’s killed by Inga in a fight, gaining joy from her suffering. Afterwards, Lee has Inga fight Mimi, hoping to put an end to her and continue running the Kumite. But the battle ends when Vern escapes his clutches and interrupts the match. Lee tries to kill him, but Mimi tricks Inga into snapping Lee's neck.

Redeeming Qualities?

None.

Heinousness?

So while he's a drug dealer (his prostitution stuff is offscreen villainy, but it's kinda something), Lee's tournament is where his bad guy credentials really start to shine, with many dying in his arena for the sake of entertainment and money. Lee's mainly a sadist who will also get personal, intentionally signing Mimi's friend up to fight Inga, then forcing her to watch her die.

He's also kinda... rapey, I guess. Before he finds out Mimi's true identity, he kinda tries to force her to sleep with him for a reward, but she turns him down. It's not much, but it shows how controlling Lee is behind his jovial personality. Mimi usually doesn't write subtle villains.

And no, Inga doesn't count. Not only does she not do much beyond kill some people, she cares for Lee, as shown when she yells in desperation after she finds out she killed him.

Conclusion

I think Lee does just enough to push the limits of a CM.

[down]The prize is either money or getting the chance to work with him. And given how Inga's been his champion for a very long time, it feels more like schmuck bait for those who want a prize; many have died from her and Lee, and there's been no new champion for a long time. No one's really won until Mimi showed up, and even then Lee wasn't going to let her win.

My question: Does Lee force people to fight in the Kumite, or can they win money? If the latter, I'm not quite sure it's enough.

[up]Hmm...I'll abstain. I won't vote no, but can't vote yes.

[up]Not really. Since the fights are basically hopeless, people are being tricked into getting themselves killed by the unstoppable Inga thinking they can beat her and get the money.

Since Lee’s such a slimeball, it’s safe to say there is no real prize, and all he cares about is making money by pandering to an audience who wants to see people die.

Honestly I'm kinda leaning yeah here... he's baiting people to be beaten to death for his audience and he's got flourishes of murders on the side and some torture.

We don't discount Fidelis Jes because he provokes people into duelling him knowing he'll get to kill them rather than just attacking people on the streets.

I was looking over the Former Complete Monsters page and noticed several were cut for being "too similar to [the original version]". Since that isn't a disqualifying feature anymore — at least not if it's a work in a different medium — per this I've decided to take a stab at reproposing one of the candidates cut for this reason.

    open/close all folders

    What is the work?
Animal Farm (1954) is a 1954 animated adaptation of George Orwell's satirical 1945 novel of the same name, presenting an allegorical analysis of the Russian Revolution and development of the USSR. The CIA bankrolled the film and mandated several changes be made to present Communism as wholly negative.

Manor Farm is a once-thriving British farm run by Mister Jones, a cantankerous alcoholic who abuses and terrorizes his animals. The wise elderly boar hog Old Major rallies the other animals and gives a speech regarding his vision of the farm as a place without humans — where all animals are equal, can prosper, and can enjoy the products of their own labour — while warning them not to adopt Mister Jones' vices... and promptly dies. The boar Snowball inherits Old Major's vision and leads the animals in a revolution that drives Mister Jones from the property. Under Snowball's leadership, the animals make progress towards making Old Major's dream a reality... until Snowball's rival Napoleon has him assassinated and usurps control of Animal Farm, slowly changing the laws to solely benefit himself and the other pigs and oppress the other animals — who are too uneducated and/or naive to realize what's going on until it's too late... at least until after years of slaving under Napoleon's hypocritical tyranny they finally get sick of Napoleon's corruption, rise up, and kill him and the other pigs.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?
Based on Josef Stalin, Napoleon is a British Saddleback boar introduced bullying his way to the front of the group to listen to Old Major's speech, and snarling at a lamb who lets out a bleat. After Old Major's death, Napoleon takes part in driving Mister Jones off Manor Farm but stands back and simply watches as the other animals fight him off when he returns with reinforcements — resulting in the farm dog being killed and Snowball being injured. Despite Old Major's warning not to adopt the vices of Mister Jones and the other humans, Napoleon quickly develops a taste for human foods like jam and begins scheming to seize power — secretly spiriting the dog's puppies away.

Snowball inherits Old Major's vision and begins formulating a new society called Animal Farm, painting the laws — "No animal shall sleep in a bed", "No animal shall drink alcohol", "Four legs good, two legs bad", "No animal shall kill another animal", "All animals are equal" — on the side of the barn for all to see, and leads the other animals in figuring out how to bring Animal Farm into fruition. However, Napoleon and his cowardly sycophant Squealer start skimming off the top, such as drinking all the cows' milk themselves.

Jealous of Snowball's prestige, Napoleon — with the puppies now fully grown into bloodthirsty attack-dogs loyal only to him — decides to put his plan to seize power for himself into motion. Opposing Snowball's plan to build a windmill, Napoleon has his attack dogs chase Snowball off the farm and kill him, then tells the other animals that Snowball was secretly in league with Mister Jones. Napoleon names himself the supreme leader of the farm, claims Snowball's windmill plan for himself, and starts hoarding all the food for himself and the other pigs while the other animals work more and eat less. Increasingly amending Animal Farm's laws to benefit himself and the other pigs, Napoleon uses Squealer to gaslight the other animals into accepting these changes and moves into Farmer Jones' house. When the hens revolt against him taking their eggs and trading them to the opportunistic human Mr. Whymper for jams, Napoleon has them executed for treason and makes singing Old Major's anthem a capital offence, fearing that it would inspire the others to rise against him like they had Mister Jones.

While Napoleon and the other pigs live in hedonism, the other animals are forced to slave to rebuild the windmill after Mister Jones blows it up. When Boxer the draught horse is seriously injured, Napoleon sells him to Mr. Whymper's glue factory in exchange for alcohol and uses the attack dogs to cow the other animals into submission. Years pass, and Animal Farm becomes an authoritarian dictatorship ruled by Napoleon — who now walks on his hind legs and wears clothes — with the other animals being even worse off than they were under Mister Jones. Finally realizing this, the animals — led by Benjamin the donkey — rise up against their swine overlords and trample Napoleon under-hoof, putting an end to his hypocrisy and tyranny.

    Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?
Napoleon is just as shocked as the other animals are by Old Major's death, but considering his earlier unpleasantness towards a lamb and even the other pigs, that hardly seems intended to be a redeeming quality. Beyond that, he is a greedy, hedonistic, lying, and power-hungry hypocrite more than happy to use violence and murder to seize and maintain his hold on power.

    Are they bad enough?
Napoleon takes Old Major and Snowball's plan for an Animal Farm where all animals are equal and turns it into an autocracy where "all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others". Even before he seizes power, Napoleon is more than happy to steal the other animals' products for himself. Following Snowball's assassination on Napoleon's orders, the pigs — and above all Napoleon — reap all the benefits of Animal Farm, while the other animals starve and/or are worked to death; and anyone who dares protest is put to death by his attack dog enforcers.

The other antagonists are the incompetent and abusive drunkard Mister Jones, but Napoleon by far beats him at his own game by the end of the film; Squealer, who is a sycophant for Napoleon; and the dogs, who overzealously follow Napoleon's orders and are used by him to terrorize the other animals into submission.

    Final verdict?

Though this leads me to ask: I know several musical writeups (and video games) were cut for being too similar to the source material. Those would be okay to re-propose, right? I'm thinking of, say, my Frieza; or some Hip-Hop Comics examples that were cut.
