Recently, a TRS effort for Casting Gag has stalled to the point where it clocked out after being on the last leg of the TRS process for so long.

So, time for a rundown. This decision was decided via crowner:

Separate Casting Gag from Actor Allusion and Actor-Shared Background in terms of scale (as described in post 39):

  • Casting Gag is a scenario where an entire role mirrors/parodies an entire previous role or RL situation of the actor. A conscious casting choice can be assumed. This can also apply to cameos.
  • Actor Allusion is reserved for deliberate yet rather isolated throw-away references to previous works/roles.
  • Actor-Shared Background is for details a character shares with the actor playing it.

So having Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd together in Spin City is a Casting Gag; them checking their watches would be an Actor Allusion

On-page examples that need sorting are in Sandbox.Casting Gag Example Sorting. Wick count is at 2424.

This is listed on Film.Promising Young Woman and a similar entry (with a Word of God citation that it was intentional) is on Trivia.Promising Young Woman under Playing with Character Type:

  • Casting Gag: Most of the younger male actors in the film — Bo Burnham, Adam Brody, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chris Lowell and Max Greenfield — have made careers out of playing affable and slightly goofy (actually) nice guys. The film flips it by casting them as guys who turn out to not be as nice as they think they are.

Is it more appropriate as Casting Gag or Playing with Character Type? Is it an example of both?

As an aside, Actor Allusion currently has over 1,000 wicks in the trivia mainspace, even though it is not trivia.

Do these examples from Batman: The Long Halloween qualify?

[up] Those both seem like coincidences caused by the same actor appearing in different works that are under the same franchise umbrella. I'd cut them both.

Trivia.House Of The Dragon

  • Casting Gag: Of the Whovian variety. The young Aegon is played by Ty Tennant, the son of David Tennant (who played the Tenth Doctor) and grandson of Peter Davison (who played the Fifth Doctor). Aegon's uncle Daemon is played by Matt Smith, who played the Eleventh Doctor.
