1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]

  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.

  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

I too experience several bugs with the new site. Even though I selected the "remember me" option, I still have to login again every time I visit.

Yesterday I launched the trope Red Sock Ruins the Laundry. but even though I put it on 2 indexes, the page still claims it's unindexed (yes, even after several edits on the page itself). Likewise, I put the trope on several pages, but the 'related' tab still claims the trope is not found in any articles.

I noticed that the reasons for cut requests on the Cut List aren't displaying (for mine and other users)

I can't tell if the mods can see them or not

Just a reminder: The editing problem apparently still has some kinks to work out.

Since yesterday, I have been trying to edit one of the Alphabetical sub-pages of Courage the Cowardly Dog in order to make a revision to the entry for The Ghost. Even though the editing was working fine earlier when I made revisions to the pages for Dirty Old Man, Mighty Mouse, Delivery Stork, and Fur Is Clothing, I ran into the same problem of clicking Save doing nothing but refreshing the Editing page.

Not everyone seems to be having this problem with editing right now, so either the ability to edit is still a crapshoot or the editing bug still hasn't been worked out for work pages who've had their trope entries split into sub-pages and alphabetized (e.g. Tropes A to M).

The browser I am using is Mozilla Firefox. I also browse the website in Safari on my iPad sometimes, but I haven't yet determined if accessing the site there has any of the same problems with editing.

Because it's pretty much impossible for this website to get anything done without the ability to edit, fixing this bug should be a high priority.

It's probably been suggested dozens of times, but an option to switch back to the old style would be very appreciated. Looking at this makes my head feel like it's in a vicegrip. There is no rhyme nor reason to it. Honestly I don't think there was anything about the old style that needed to be changed in the first place. Too bad people feel compelled to try to progress even when perfection has already been achieved.

[up][up] The old style had a lot of coding issues and workarounds that needed to be made more efficient, which I guess translated into this overhaul.

Ninth issue list:

  • superscript and subscript formatting are both broken in the same way as [[note]]. Subscript and superscript formatting ( text and text) are broken in general, not just notes & labelnotes. All three work properly inside folders, but are displayed as plaintext anywhere els
  • this image as a format weirdness; I honestly can't remember if this was an issue in the previous format, but the spoiler leading to the bracket opening in the previous line, while the spoiler itself is only beginning in the next line.
  • things from [Wiki] Following list no longer display any indicator at all. The only way I've noticed anything changed was because I remembered the last entry on the top of the list from last check. There were no marks when I checked a minute ago, despite having pages on top and those weren't pages I've visited at that time.
  • on pages any small-text markup doesn't work (at least on the first level), e.g. the tree on YMMV.Black Mirror.
  • Headers within folders are offset, which offsets everything below them further, such as on Black Mirror: San Junipero
  • not being able to search thread titles
  • On the Summary page for Live-Action TV [Live-Action TV], all of the redlinks show up as bluelinks.
  • Links to nonexistent pages where a page with the same title exists in a different namespace (like Main.Adventure Time) show up as sometimes red and sometimes blue. They should be purple or something.
  • floatboxes are fixed, but they have the Night Vision display bug and I can't read them.
  • change the Thread Watch so it ONLY shows threads with new unread posts in them so we don't have to scroll down through a list of 100+ threads
  • [lakingsif] trying to change a vote on a crowner brings up a security warning pop-up on my computer and won't let me do it.
  • show spoilers bug. Toggle resets upon refresh [latest Firefox and Windows 10].
  • trying to view a page's source gets a http error 500
  • the markup now putting the text closer to the previous lines than whatever it's acting a header for
  • [rmctagg09] when I do the Save Draft (Which still shows the "No discussion with this ID exists" thing even though it does indeed save), the draft sticks even after I've posted, and doesn't change if I try saving something else as a draft.
  • [Meanken] my email is now incorrect. Tried to shift it back to the correct e-mail, but now it's telling me the e-mail is "already taken"
  • [Fallen Legend] I tried to use this site from google and it warned me it was an isecure site that could steal my personal information.
  • The new "This is a YMMV/Trivia entry" icons on the main page overlap the surrounding text. Example.
  • Putting a post in "moderator mode" does not replace the avatar title with "With Mod Hat On" as it used to.
  • I don't think the icons should be right in front of the pothole; they should replace the bullet point, as they did in the previous version. Looked nicer that way.
  • Anyone else trying to edit a page and being told "you cannot insert HTML into source" when you're just typing in new letters?
  • The recent page activity is wrong: Bury Your Gays is at the top but it was last edited 5 days ago (it also lists everything as being on revision 1)
  • When searching the forum, entering a multiple word term results in the search returning every result with every mention of each word, regardless of whether or not those words belong together. Enclosing with "" (as per how this works on google) just makes the search function search for the quote marks as well.
  • Trope Launch Pad entry text is incredibly hard to read in night vision mode because it's dark text on a dark background.
  • I found in the Dynasty Warriors Other Characters page. The usage of umlaut texts or symbols will revert into 'v'. For instance: Lu Bu. Because of someone insisting the usage of u with umlaut, it now renders the word into Lv Bu.
  • the customized wikiwords don't show up as their customized forms on the articles they're crosswicked
  • Some custom titles still do not work: Examples: Half Life, You Tube, and my own username (as it appears in articles, I mean; it displays correctly here in the forum). Armor Piercing Question is fixed (though it doesn't display correctly here, for some reason), but Armor Piercing Response isn't. Etc.
  • The All-Red Entry is no longer red.
  • home page currently has the tab title of "TV Tropes - TV Tropes".
  • the search bar is absent from the header while visiting the home page in mobile view, in portrait orientation.
  • Laconic pages don't show what comes before or after on the Laconic Wiki index. Like so
  • Just noticed this while looking at the crowner, but all crowner tabs on Chrome Win7 are labelled Image Pickin'.
  • Expanding on my previous post, it seems like the Webcomics forum is also refusing to accept the "mark read" click. Waterfox (Firefox offshoot) 55.2.0 on Win7.
  • The Random Media button is notably absent from an iPhone screen, though it can been seen from a laptop or iPad, the Random Trope button is only seen on an iPhone.
  • The site now places images (question-marks and gas tanks) to Trivia and YMMV tropes when they are on a main page. I noticed some images cover words next to them, as seen here on this page.
  • There's the issue of a white box surrounding every image on this site.
  • The cancel and upload image buttons during editing are viewable (from laptop or iPad), however they are nowhere to be seen on an iPhone.
  • I can't edit my posts in discussion threads for wiki pages...well, I can, but they don't get applied when I click save. For that matter, discussion also doesn't seem to be parsing links properly, based on the urls that show up when I scroll over them. If it helps, this was the thread I was posting in.
  • the redirected title that appears just below the main title is also in large, ultra-bold text. It ought to be smaller than the actual title, and probably not bolded. [Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty]
  • I do find it odd how the folders look different on the Preview and main pages.
  • Win 7, Firefox. Visual bug: The last folder of a section practically sits on top of the header in the next section, as in there's no spacing in between.
  • The HTTPS shows, but it's still not fully active across the entire site, as in not a green padlock/"Secured"
  • "Sorry, you cannot insert HTML into the Source Editor." should perhaps be clarified a little as a lot of people are being surprised by that warning.
  • The high contrast colors make all the subtle grays indistinguishable, and things like the WMG subheaders are impossible to read, being whute on light grey.
  • If using Firefox, I can only access "Messages" and "Logout" options upon clicking my avatar. I am unable to access my profile and "following" unless using direct links to them.
  • Yesterday I launched the trope Red Sock Ruins The Laundry. but even though I put it on 2 indexes, the page still claims it's unindexed (yes, even after several edits on the page itself). Likewise, I put the trope on several pages, but the 'related' tab still claims the trope is not found in any articles.
  • the reasons for cut requests on the Cut List aren't displaying (for mine and other users) [Moderators cannot see them either]

Miscellanea:

  • I've referred this example issue and this example issue to the admins.
  • Things that still need examples:
    • all the images are so tiny now in work pages. They are like, what 180 pixels wide instead of the previous max of 350?
    • Links to outside sites now have small text.
  • The left sidebar button is now in the profile, swapping place with the spoiler toggle.
  • Post any spuriously locked page to the Edit Requests thread in the FAQ forum, maybe a moderator can fix the editing issue by a null edit.

Says I "cannot insert HTML into the Source Editor" when I try to edit, which has never happened to me before and I cannot find what is causing the problem.

Also, I've found that really long folders cut off after about 25-30 entries.

@Zistal: What overwhelming demand or major need was there for this sort of overhaul? Did they just feel like drastically changing up the site for some reason? Because I don't see anything justifying this much of a rush job to give this much of a makeover to an already perfectly functional and aesthetically solid interactive website and to launch all of this at once without making absolute sure that almost everything works as it should and that the majority of editors on the site actually like the changes. Not even an ounce of beta testing. We're just gonna do this and push it on everyone. And then it completely fails.

The max image size is shrunk in half and the border makes every image look blatantly boxed in. The image upload option is no longer there under "More". The save edit function didn't even work initially for me, so there was no way I could do anything. Plus there was the issue with the notes and labelnotes either not showing up or appearing as plain text. Even this new choice of edit box font looks and feels clunky compared to the old one. The strange indent on the second- and third-level bullet tabs, that just looks ugly. Especially when the first-level tabs are still the same as before. Character pages with folders categorized into sections now have the last folder in one section literally touching the next section's category line.

Whoever's bright idea this was needs to completely roll this back, go back over, beta test everything multiple times, and then proceed to launch the overhaul again only if and when everything checks out and not a moment sooner. As is right now, this is a categorical failure on all levels.

@lalalei2001: Okay, so it wasn't completely without reason. Look what's happening now, though. 58 pages of user complaints that can tell you this is hardly more efficient. As it stands right now, this feels almost unusable.

EDIT: I'm using night vision. This post initially showed up to me in light-gray text on off-white turquoise background. Buck ugly and literally unreadable without highlighting.

I'm also getting the error about not being able to insert HTML, even though I'm not inserting HTML and I checked and there's no HTML on the page I'm getting the error on. (Edit: The page in question is WebVideo.Captain Southbird.)

My account from around early 2008 also said it was registered in 2012 shortly after the update, but now it says it's from January 1, 2001, and my profile information was also gone when I saw the 2001 thing.

I'm using Firefox version 61 on Manjaro Linux (both the browser and OS are 64-bit), if that matters.

Edit: I should probably add that the site said my account was from 2001 before the update as well, so it might be a case of the 2012 thing being reverted and my account being too old for the site to accurately track the registration date of.

Edit: Here's a hastily made image showing what I mentioned above.

Update: I removed the character combination "<3" from the page I got the HTML error on and now editing works again.

I seem to keep my logins now at least so that's good

though I still haven't got image upload back - or so I thought at first. Rather, it doesn't show up at first click so I have to close it and click it again for it to show. Tried in Firefox, Chrome and mobile (Samsung Galaxy 5.1 Android with samsung browser)

edit: actually still got the "logged out after closing browser" on mobile. Well, the Samsung browser at least, mobile Chrome keeps the login

I open multiple tabs of trope pages for easier referencing, and in the past, my laptop never had any issues. Now, with six tabs of trope pages open (plus eight tabs to other sites as of this post), both Memory and CPU usage on Task Manager shoots up (not completely to a worrying degree, but still a "why are you such a hog?"). One tab, usage is at average levels. 64-bit Win 7.

It looks like indexes that haven't been edited still work.

I make a lot of work pages for old movies. I've made work pages for films from the 1930s and 1950s since this overhaul, and those indexes are now screwed. However, the indexes for Early Films, Films of the 1920s, and Films of the 1940s have not been updated since the site was updated, and those indexes are still indexing correctly.
