Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Okay I'm behind still, but reading Magilou EP, she just seems like standard Jerk with a Heart of Gold unless I'm missing something, rediscovering her humanity. The is she a bastard section goes over her ruining lives, but I don't see that in the EP, just that she had a shitty one. Even being complicit in her leader having a Daemon arm doesn't feel too bad, as the leader only uses it to eat other Daemons, and like I said standard Jerk with a Heart of Gold rediscovering her humanity. She doesn't even directly participate in such stuff, unless I'm misunderstanding. Could I have more examples of her ruining lives?

I think there's enough evidence, especially with the movie, to say they intended for Plank to be sapient. Sevea times he tells Johnny things that Johnny had no way of knowing. Regardless, I feel like he's treated like enough of a character to deserve an EP. I think it'll be a fun one to discuss.

Either way... would there be a problem with listing Plank as it appears in Johnny's mind?

To he honest, I really don't think we can say Plank is just Johnny's imaginary fried after the movie. He literally drives a bus by telekinetically controlling the steering wheel and gas pedals. We actually see this on screen. I feel like the creator just wanted to make it as blatant as possible for the Grand Finale.

Admittedly, it's weird to be fighting over the veracity of a piece of wood's sentience, but I do think solidly establishing Plank as a standalone character would help my case.

I'll hear you out on a Plank discussion, but as a fan, I'm highly skeptical.

Also, finally wrapped up my Sonic Boom stuff and concluded that Hypnobot is the only character who counts. D-fekt isn't magnificent enough and Kingsford ultimately stands out as more of a jerk than anything else. If somebody comes along later and does an EP for the series, I'd hear them out, but I would enter with the expectation of a thumbs-down.

I apologize for my absence concerning talking about further information on the ULP Contact, mainly due to college work and such, but I'm finally here to discuss his presence in the Criminal Enterprises DLC

Basically, a heatwave is hitting San Andreas (while irrelevant to this discussion, is brought up a bunch of times by almost everyone, even Weazel News) and high gas prices. The ULP hires the Online Protagonist to investigate, where it's discovered that not only is the Duggan Family, with their operation led by Mason Duggan, is manipulating the gas prices for their own gain, but they're using leftover data from Cliffford to do so, which they acquired from the FIB's seized assets. Due to this, the Contact sends the Online Protagonist to interrupt a deal between the Duggan Family and the FIB, killing Mason and taking their software for Cliffford. For the final assignment, the Online Protagonist is sent to the old silo in Mount Chiliad to destroy all left over traces of Cliffford for good.

Since the Contact has already been approved for almost a year, I think this could be a good addition to his MB section. What do you all think?

  • Sonic Omens: Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, once again the brilliant arch-nemesis of Sonic, figures out The Exiled's plan and is dedicated to stopping it. Spending a month stealing the Chaos Emeralds while evading G.U.N, he stays one step ahead of Sonic, Tails and Shadow when they get involved, snagging the Emeralds before they can arrive while leaving behind robots to slow them down. When the Exiled manages to steal them in an ambush, Eggman manages to escape while rescuing Sonic, teaming up with him to stop Exiled so that he can Take Over the World instead. Locating his base and providing a distraction so Sonic and Tails can slip in, Eggman plays a sizable role in stopping Exiled's plans, parting peacefully with Sonic for the time being.

Okay, League time.

Who is Twisted Fate?

Coming from a group of nomadic traders, Tobias Felix began his career as a conman when he happened upon a set of magic cards. He quickly made himself a fortune in gambling with said cards and his own skill at games, but was exiled from his people after running away when some of his marks rallied to ransack his home in retaliation for their losses.

As a drifter, Felix improved his game as he swindled from whatever arrogant blowhards he came across, eventually meeting a kindred reprobate by the name of Malcolm Graves. The two were together did the Devil's Tango became good friends as they pulled cons and heists all over the world, successfully cracking the impenetrable Clockwork Vault and rescuing a kidnapped heir only to take the reward money and sell him off to the highest bidder. Unfortunately, Graves was eventually caught on a particularly stupid job. Felix tried his best to save his lover good friend, but upon failing decided to give up his name and take up the alias of Twisted Fate.

Continuing his exploits of cheating and theft, Fate found himself in more trouble than usual without his partner covering his back, but always managed to escape into the night; although imprisoned many times, Fate never spent more than a night in a cell, with his captors finding naught but a single calling card to confirm he ever even existed.

He and Graves eventually reunite when Fate takes a job to steal from the infamous pirate captain Gangplank, all part of an elaborate plan by Miss Fortune to draw her nemesis out. Fate manages to stave off a vengeful Graves and convince him he didn't intentionally leave him to rot, with their fight causing enough chaos to get Gangplank to try to personally kill the duo. The two help each other escape and continue their escapades, notably stealing a powerful magic crown from a sea witch. On another job they run into their old partner Bombolini, who wants to kill them for being bad friends; Fate goads Malcolm into a loud argument to distract Bombolini, blowing up him, all his goons, and half the docks as he and Malcolm make their escapes.

They eventually run into Fortune again when the sea witch hires her to capture the duo; although they manage to get her on the ropes, she manages to maneuver them onto a trap door and sells them off—but not before smuggling Fate one of his cards, allowing the duo to escape once more.

Any mitigating factors?

His biggest issue is that Fortune gets the best of him a few times, but he notes in the Gangplank job that he was just off his game that day, and the second instance is because Graves was being an ass about how they'd split her bounty and distracted him from a conveniently placed trapdoor. Otherwise he's pretty much always on top of the situation, and even managed to flawlessly escape her in a solo story when she came for his bounty.

Dude's a brilliant conman and fun, charismatic foil to his dimwitted partner, frequently talking them both into and out of tougher and tougher scraps for the hell of it. For as much as the two keep getting into trouble, Fate's always able to get them out alive and (usually) with their prize in tow, while having the times of their lives in the process.

  • Twisted Fate, the Card Master, was born Tobias Felix, a drifter who came into possession of a set of magic cards. With both these tools and his own keen instincts, T.F. became a legendary gambler and swindler who made a career of humiliating the rich and foolish, working with his partner Malcolm Graves to pull off countless impossible heists across the world. Although the two are separated when Graves is captured on a job and blames his friend for leaving him behind, T.F. easily manages to win back his partner's trust when the two inevitably reunite during Miss Fortune's destructive overthrow of the reaver king Gangplank, continuing their heists in Bilgewater and beyond as T.F.'s brilliant improvisation secures the duo their survival again and again.

Upon witnessing their close bond, Lula travels into their memories and witnesses the shared loss of their own families and resolves to free the pair out of newfound sympathy. In a clever ambush, Lula attacks her coven while they are distracted by the birthing ritual and slays her matriarch's mount to draw her into a duel. Hope nobody else was planning to do her first—"our own little brunette outcast" as Becky called her haha:

What is the work?

The Addams Family is the 1991 film adaptation of the classic 1960s sitcom which in turn was based off of Charles Addams' cartoons and its 1993 sequel is Addams Family Values. It focuses of course on the nuclear family that is anything but normal and instead intensely fascinated by the morbid, debilitated and of course macabre. One member despite her age stands out as an effectively smart and perceptive individual.

Who is she and what has she done?

Wednesday Addams—the youngest?—at the time—of the Addams children—has a penchant for removing all the heads from all her dolls and is present right in the opening when her family pours a cauldron of boiling water on Christmas Carolers, is next seen convincing her older? brother Pugsley to let her tie him up and shoot at an apple in his mouth with a crossbow—she later while having a conversation binds him to an electric chair and then turns it on too—and due to her knowledge of the Bermuda Triangle and mother Morticia's own doubts about him too, begins to suspect that the recently returned Uncle Fester is a conman (Gordon Craven is indeed the actual Fester, but with amnesia). Wednesday spies on and tests Fester for knowledge while also observing at times when he says or does something that wouldn't fit in with what's expected of the family and while warming up to him later overhears a conversation between him and his "mother" loan shark Abigail Craven and then runs and hides in the big yard—later found asleep by father Gomez in the Mausoleum/crypt. Eventually the Addamses overcome Craven and their own desperate for money and corrupt attorney Tully Alford with Fester getting his memory back and everybody celebrating Halloween seven months later (Wednesday dressed regularly, but saying "I'm a homicidal maniac, they look like everybody else").

The real meat of her actions come in the sequel though as Wednesday concocts different schemes with Pugsley to get rid of their new baby brother Pubert and then grows suspicious of new nanny Debbie Jellinsky poking around and learning about Fester's finances to the point that Debbie convinces Morticia and Gomez to send Wednesday and Pugsley to Camp Chippewa for highly privileged rich kids run by the Graingers Gary and Becky—very jovial, but highly ableist, classist and racist—haha—and is possibly willing to let Alpha Bitch Amanda Buckman drown during life-saving practice—though maybe she can't actually swim. Haha. Wednesday and Pugsley—along with neurotic and allergenic Joel Glicker—openly expresses disdain towards everything and make an attempt to escape under the cover of darkness only to be caught. Discovering Debbie is the Black Widow Serial Killer intending to make Uncle Fester her next victim for the fortune, Wednesday eventually forced into a room with Pugsley and Joel to watch a lot of cutesy and Disney related stuff and leads the others in claiming to be ready to fully accept the status quo of the camp (with an unnerving smile that at least fools Gary and Becky) and learn and perform the role of Pocahontas in Gary’s INCREDIBLY non-PC play of The First Thanksgiving ("Light meat and dark meat! Take it away!" Haha).

Eventually during the actual performance—upon at first keeping the dialogue the way it was written as she says her lines—Wednesday literally flips the script and changes the dialogue about how the Pilgrims/Settlers will not get away with their massive colonizing of the Native Americans and thus all the downtrodden kids forced to also play Native Americans initiate Wednesday's plan to set first the sets and then the whole camp on fire while also antagonizing and capturing Amanda and everyone else and trying to roast Gary and Becky over a fire. Haha. Wednesday and Pugsley escape and return home where Fester retuned from escaping Debbie and Wednesday at first seems unmoved ("You sent us yo camp. They made us sing.") and then also relents and hugs Fester with Pugsley. The family then overcomes Debbie, eventually celebrates Pubert's 1st birthday and Wednesday then decides to either test or get rid of Joel by having Thing spring out of the ground and grab him at Debbie's grave.

Is she magnificent?

Wednesday's actions in the second film are incredible in which she ends up twisting things around and bringing the corrupt hierarchy of the camp down and her means in which she doesn't take anybody's crap eventually leads to her manipulating and saying the right things so that Wednesday can catch pretty much everyone off-guard and leave everything in her path in ruin. This means having to play the part and then secretly concoct the scheme to lead the downtrodden in overthrowing everything remains perfectly inconspicuous in the process. That masterstroke is really what recommends her for this.

Bitch? Too much?

While many of the camp patrons would fall under Asshole Victim, Wednesday shows she's someone who not just is dark and violent for the sake of being dark and violent and while it's a Paper-Thin Disguise that she all of a sudden becomes that conformist they want her to be, the tone supports it. While she also clearly shows signs early on of wanting to be a killer and/or witch, they're played in a sardonic but endearing tone and she clearly loves her family despite how much she tries to reserve her feelings or how rough she can get with her brothers too. Things like burying a cat alive and trying to petrify Joel could be portrayed as worse than they are and she and Pugsley burying both Tully and Craven when they're each possibly still alive is not specific enough beyond possible Fridge Horror.

Verdict?

I think I can say [tup]. If she doesn't make it, at least she was worth the proposal though.

Likewise I'm not really seeing any reason why Wednesday shouldn't count. She's a delightful piece of shit from her start to her finish and if the EP's refreshing the details to me correct, she's got the smarts, too.
