Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

From YMMV.Arrow:

  • Supporters of Oliver/Felicity have been steadily jumping ship across Seasons 3 and 4 as their relationship became more and more toxic — more than any other relationship on the show (including Oliver/Laurel, which saw pre-series Oliver cheat on Laurel with her sister). For some, this is not only because of the increasing drama and angst in a formerly subdued, drama-free relationship but also because they feel Olicity takes up screen time better spent on other plots and characters. Their unnecessary conflict concerning Oliver's secret son William has also turned off a lot of fans, with the audience divided over blaming Oliver for lying to his fiancee when he specifically promised he'd stop or blaming Felicity for breaking up with him when she's kept secrets herself, which caused her to lose supporters. Season 5 did not help fan-perception of the ship, as the temporary relationships Oliver and Felicity had that season were far less toxic than their own and made people question why they even got back together at the end of the season considering how badly the initial relationship ended. What absolutely killed the pairing's popularity, however, was the ending to the 2017 crossover Crisis on Earth-X: the infamous double wedding, which was hated by everyone except the most diehard of Olicity shippers. After that, only Olicity's most hardcore supporters bother to defend the pairing these days — everyone else, including regular Olicity shippers and fans who didn't give a damn about Arrow or Olicity, came to outright despise it. Even after Felicity got Rescued from the Scrappy Heap in later seasons and became more of a Base-Breaking Character, many fans admit that they still believe that Oliver and Felicity aren't a good fit for each other and that they still don't support the pairing.

Now for the most part I am just going to try and trim this. It's the bolded part I queston. I want to know if it fits. Like does "people who didn't ship them continued not to" belong in a trope about a bunch of shippers stopping shipping characters they used together?

When it comes to a Boobs-and-Butt Pose, does the character need to have their head turned back as well, or is it just any instance where a character's boobs and butt happen to be shown at the same time? For example, say Action Girl is in an action scene in a comic, and one panel has her face her opponent with her back to the reader at an angle where her boobs and butt are visible at the same time. Would that be considered a Boobs-and-Butt Pose, or would her head need to be turned to face the reader?

[up][up][up]In that case the appropriate trope would be Villains Act, Heroes React.

[up][up]What trope is this under? The sheer amount of Felicity hate makes me wonder if I've watched the same show as these fans have, because I absolutely do not see her character as a bad one ...

[up]I'm really trying to picture the physiology of the woman whose butt and boobs are visible while her head is turned away. I would think you'd need the character to turn at the waist towards the POV for this pose to be conceivable under the rules of human anatomy.

Oh, my mistake. It is under Abandon Shipping, which is why I question "still don't ship them" fitting for a trope about well fans stopping shipping them.

So if I read that example right, it says that fans did not like that ship, then as the seasons went on they ... still didn't like the ship??

That's not Abandon Shipping , that's just complaining stuffed inside more complaining.

As far as I can tell what it is saying at least at first is that fans shipped them then stopped, but then goes onto say how people who didn't care about Arrow or the ship came to hate it. Then says that they continued not to do so even when fans warmed up to the character again. Which doesn't seem to be this trope. Or at least at first seems to be and then just becomes complaining. This whole YMMV page is full of this stuff and is why I started a cleanup, but that is neither here nor there. I just wondered if that part fit or not/

[up][up][up][up] I'm referring to instances where the camera/panel is behind a character, but at an angle where Side Boob is also visible.

Here is an example. Character is facing away, but the perspective is at an where you see the side of her chest.

[up][up][up]You should take complaining to the complaining thread. But the whole example needs to focus on the fact that fans used to ship the characters but no longer do, for whatever reasons. The point has been made, all over this wiki, that fans are vocal in their dislike of Felicity, it does not need to be shoehorned into every single example.

From Trivia.Sonic The Hedgehog 22022:

  • Role Reprise:
    • Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails. She was chosen for the role because she has been the voice of Tails in every installment of the franchise since 2014's Sonic Boom.
    • In the Italian dub, Maurizio Merluzzo reprises his role as Knuckles from the games.

Is this a valid example? If not, should they be removed?

Looking at the description for Role Reprise, if the same actor works in a new adaptation, it does count as a reprise.

From ShipSinking.Fan Works:

  • Vigilantes' Dawn: If it wasn't already established by Oliver and Laurel's devotion to each other, invokedWord of God outright stated that there won't even be so much as a hint of Olicity in the story. She clarifies that while Felicity will still be attracted to Oliver like any normal heterosexual woman would, she won't be interested in a relationship with him due to a combination of him already being with Laurel and recognizing all the baggage he has and being unwilling to deal with it.

Does this really fit? Ship Sinking is for when the characters involved in the ship say In-Universe that they won't get together. This is just word of god that the canon ship won't happen. So does this really fit?

Choujin Sensen mentions Gamble Fish twice, saying that Sensen is Darker and Edgier compared to Gamble Fish. Is that how that trope works?

Because it's another work by the same people, not a continuation. I think?

Found these on YMMV.Tokyo Ghoul while doing trope cleanup, commented out with a lot of percentages and this note:

How many of these listed are minor characters? Only minor character qualify for Ensemble Darkhorse.

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Several
    • Shirazu is quite popular, due to subverting his tough-guy image with a dorky and kind-hearted personality.
    • Mutsuki is quite popular, especially within the LGBT fanbase.
    • Seidou Takizawa, source of neverending Memes and Nightmare Fuel. His return pretty much caused the fandom to explode.
    • Nutcracker has become quite popular, after her Curb-Stomp Battle against the Ooshiba Squad.
    • Hirako seems to have a following online, mostly based around how horrible it is to be him
    • Ihei gained a fanbase within two chapter of debuting, mostly for being easily one of the most competent Action Girls seen in the series thus far.
    • Matsumae thanks to being one of the most competent and fiercely loyal characters in the series. Her rivalry with Ihei definitely helps.
    • Nimura Furuta after a few short scenes showing his true nature.

Anyone familiar with the work know if any of these are an example?

[up][up][up]From what I've read over on Ship Sinking has to be a scene in the work itself. Word of God doesn't cut it. The fanfic itself has to include a scene definitively killing off the ship.

[up][up]I'm not familiar with either of these works, are they related in-universe somehow? If it's only a case of the same creators making a different story that D&E, then I would say no, not an example.

I posted this under Voodoo Shark for Star Wars, but deleted it because I decided I wasn't sure if it's an example or not. Here it is

  • Near the beginning of the film, a bunch of bomber ships try to drop bombs on a Dreadnaught, although only one succeeds. The bombs fall down onto the Dreadnaught, except there is no gravity in space, and thus no "down", so this shouldn't happen. The novelization "explains" this by saying the bombs are magnetic and were attracted to the Dreadnaught. This solves nothing, as if the bombs really are magnetic, they should be pulled towards the bombers instead of the Dreadnaught, due to them being much closer.

I found this on Sponge Bob Square Pants S 2 E 17 Procrastination Im With Stupid

  • Small Role, Big Impact: Gary is only present for one scene as SpongeBob is getting ready to act stupid for Patrick, but that particular moment — when he asks SpongeBob if it's okay and SpongeBob wonders what could go wrong — plays a huge part, as it serves as a foreshadowing of Patrick treating him like he's a real idiot.

[up] Since Gary doesn't actually do anything plot-relevant in that moment, I say cut.

From YMMV.I Carly 2021:

  • Ship-to-Ship Combat: Averted, with no Sam and no addition of new regular characters there's only two realistic long-term ships to make from the characters, the classic Creddie, and the new Spencer/Harper.

So this is playing with it correct? YMMV can't be played with am I good to remove?
