Real Life section maintenance

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.

As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

I wasn't the one to suggest that first.

It's not the main reasoning, the crowner still says it'd be marked as impossible in real life, so I don't see an issue. If at And You Thought It Would Fail the segment would have the same problem, then it can get on the crowner as well.

And both tropes overlapping is a TRS question.

Feel free to Holler to remove it from the crowner for now if needed. I'm not seeing what yet, but I'll admit if I don't get something and Tabs got misdirected.

Shouldn't War Is Glorious be classified as NRLP due to the nature of the subject being controversial (and largely being a narrative trope)? If War Is Hell is classified under NRLP, than surely, it'll make sense to have its counterpart be classified as well.

Double posting because the previous post was made and retracted due to a brain fart from taking a break from this thread due to health reasons, but what was this post referring to? If it was referring to It Will Never Catch On or And You Thought It Would Fail, neither is IUEO; the former is objective without being IUEO.

Edit: I added text to It Will Never Catch On's crowner entry saying the page will be cut regardless (though without examples being moved and without being made NRLEP if it's downvoted) per this post from Tabs.

^ Sorry to hear about your health, hope all is better now smile

Did anything come of asking the other mods about applying the blanket NRLEP of Sex Tropes to Sexual Harassment and Rape Tropes? That will take care of a couple of open tropes right away. Even adding any tropes from the latter than aren't currently on the former (shouldn't SHaRT (wow, that acronym...) be Sex Tropes by default anyway?) would take care of it.

Well, at least one other mod was fine with the blanket ban proposal. If people here are fine with it, I think we can move forward with it.

I know not every trope on the index is specifically about rape or sexual harassment but I don't see a good reason to make an exception for them. Wife Husbandry falls into that category.

EDIT: I see that Hates Being Touched is on the index and the RL section seems ok (could be wrong though) so theres that...

^ I think someone was really liberal with adding tropes to SHaRT. Hates Being Touched doesn't come across as inherently sexual to me. It can be, but a lot of tropes can be in the right (wrong?) context. (A lot of the ones that say "not always about rape..." come across this way.) Plus it's real life examples are pretty general. (British people, autistic people, blind people, etc.)

So then maybe we move problematic examples from SHaRT to Sex Tropes. Wife Husbandry and Hello, Sailor! should be easy. (Other stereotype sexual tropes like Horny Sailors and All Gays are Promiscuous being there gives good precedent.)

I'm in favor of adding a blanket ban for SHaRT (I'm going to steal that acronym from you whenever it's brought up in the future).

Also, I'd be fine with removing Hates Being Touched from SHaRT because it's about physical contact in general and not just sexual touching.

That seems fine to me too. Maybe the others that are "not always about rape..." too. Seems like the kind of index where examples should explicitly qualify.

If no objections come up today, I have some time to do some real life pruning from SHaRT tropes tomorrow.

I removed Hates Being Touched because the text given for why it was on the index seemed more like something that belongs on an Analysis page instead of an index.

No objections to removing the other ones that aren't always about sexual harassment or rape because they'd also be material for an Analysis page and not that index.

The vote's not even in to cut it (though it most likely will be cut) and you're already saying it is so problematic that we need to super-duper cut it?

Yeah, there's no need to discuss that when the trope is still on the crowner and there's no reason to PRLC it anyways.

like, if it's NRLEP, it effectively is PRLC because no one can make the page again without violating policy. putting it on the PRLC list on its own isn't necessary.

...As mentioned, the crowner needs to conclude first and once the NRLEP is set the page won't be remade anyway. If it is, then we can consider PRLC'ing it but that's a last resort.
