Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

It might be worth letting Nightmare Fuel run a bit more and linking this crowner from the cleanup thread, since it's getting a lot of publicity and might not be stable (although people aren't supposed to vote on something that's struck out).

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

@ Arcades Sabboth: If you want that done, go ahead and do it. It's right at the point where I would be calling it, but I'll leave it for you if you want to do what you said.

Total of 10 votes, and 2:1 ratio is what we're going for, I believe.

Go ahead and place your vote, and call attention to it all you want to. We're intentionally waiting to call that one until we see what the Nightmare Fuel Cleanup thread has to say about it.

Place your vote on the crowner, Basically, I'm putting that one off as long as I can justify it because I know that the instant it gets cut, there will be angry people complaining that they didn't see the vote.

What's the reasoning behind wanting to remove the Real Life Nightmare Fuel page? I don't see it. I probably needs to be cleaned of natter/This Troper/etc., but the core concept (things in real life that people find scary) seems valid.

Real Life sections in this wiki are only tolerated as long as they don't cause problems and too much natter.

And RL Nightmare Fuel is already cut, so there's no reason for it to be on this crowner.

What can be cut, can ber uncut. Nightmare Fuel has its main cleanup thread, and that thread should decide what to do with RL examples.

Alternatively, one should have a thread to reinstating RL pages once the situation clears. Right now, Nightmare Fuel doesn't fullfill the cut requirement.

No. This crowner decides what happens with RL sections, and the cut request was made by a moderator. An Audience Reaction trope like this needs no RL examples. They're too close to Troper Tales.

I did the cut request before I saw this thread. As far as I'm aware, no special permission is needed to cut a RL section, just a problem. That's what we tell people in ATT all the time.

A RL section for an Audience Reaction serves no purpose. Unlike a trope, which may at least provide information about the origins or inspirations of the trope and how it can differ in fiction; it provides nothing even tangentially related to our mission. It's just a list of things people found scary in real life. It was massive (broken into at least a half dozen pages) and filled to the brim with Troper Tales.

Why would we want to keep and maintain that?

While NF is subjective, it is not merely about audience - it is about THINGS that are horrible, and examples horrible "to a typical person" are justified in staying. Most important, those DO "provide inspiration" to fictional examples. Also note that now that ANF and HONF are merged the counterargument "not intended to be scary" doesn't cut. The examples here are also not as controversial as, say, Complete Monster examples.

Also, if you cut RL section, TWO things will happen:

  • The examples will go into other Horror Tropes (which are not all Audience) and bungle up their RL sections. There also will be many copies this way.
  • The examples will go into Film / Literature section by way of Films / Books that describe these. (This further justifies the fact that those are NOT Troper Tales, which of course should be cut). Having a book about Ebola is Literature and Not So Different from book about fictional "Red Plague". And cutting any books / films / etc about RL is only justified if the whole thing is catastrophically bad ( like "Lolicon" was).

Final point is a formal one. Applying the "10 votes rule" for a page with such a big contingent may be formally right, but it is wrong in the spirit. I FULLY UNDERSTAND that what has happened is not a scam, but: setting a removal crowner at the moment most page sympatisants are preoccupied with cleaning, and acting on it in the very narrow window when the removal requirements were fullfilled just reeks of bad practice. Therefore the crowner should be allowed to stay longer (at least a week) before closing.

The examples aren't controversial? Listing a religion or a cult is straight Flame Bait, and yes, there were such examples.

The idea that the examples will go into Horror Tropes is a ridiculous Slippery Slope Fallacy.

Audience Reactions for real life are in poor taste. Also, you're ignoring a critical fact. Real life sections are tolerated as long as they aren't in a bad state. Otherwise, they're cut. The Nightmare Fuel articles were in a terrible state.

Nightmare Fuel is not a subjective trope, it is purely an audience reaction of "I found this scary." "I found this real thing scary" is not an inspiration for a writer. It's just an excuse for people to talk, which they can do here on the forum.

I highly doubt the examples are going to infest other pages. We've cut real life sections many times in the past and I have yet to see that happen.

You didn't cut BIG tropes before. Not permanently at least. All other examples with STANDING "No real life Examples" are either small, or dangerous by their nature, not just bad. Most important, NF is BEING CLEANED right now, so one should wait until the cleaning efforts finish before judgement. Also I repeat that any permanent cut done after such a short time is arbitrary. Page should be restored, allowed to be cleaned, and THEN a judgement should be cast. NF is not merely an audience reaction. It is about thing that MOST PEOPLE find scary.

We've cut BIG tropes before. All Character Alignment and related subtropes. It's been fine since then. Got a headache off our heads.

Furthermore, we discussed this in the mod forum and at least four moderators agreed. The cut itself was approved by the administrator.

This decision will not be reversed.

Just a reminder to please downvote the striked entries in the crowner to put them on the bottom for clarity.

18th Feb '24 11:27:30 PM

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
