Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

Okay, there's a lot across the various pages, I'll just zap anything that's clear complaining. For example:

  • Fridge Horror: Crusading for a Turnabout ends with Diamond Tiara essentially pulling a Karma Houdini and not getting punished for what she did. However, her reputation is going to plummet quickly once it turns out that she's indirectly at cause for everything that transpired.

This feels like a headcannon for personal reassurance. Also, saying she's responsible for everything in the case is a massive exaggeration.

Could a mod please PM her with a warning about this?

i don't want to also ask for mods to do something abt them bc that steps a bit too close to minimodding for me, but if she's a repeated problem then we should probably send her a notifier or smthn. idk

Found this on Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica and I feel like it's complain-y, but I would like second opinions.

"Blind Idiot" Translation: This is has become far more apparent now that a bunch of outraged fans took it upon themselves and completed a retranslation for the game. Certain characters just come off completely wrong and some plot points are either missing or mangled due to NISA not translating things properly or just not putting in the effort to wrangle Japanese puns into something that makes sense in English. That's without mentioning the utter lack of QA that missed multiple problems such as broken palettes or missing graphical effects, in addition to several other minor bugs.

It seems factual enough, but needs to be toned back, and bugs belong under a different heading. Maybe:

"Blind Idiot" Translation: The official release by NISA makes some characters come off wrong and plot points are missing or misleading. Nor is there any attempt to render the Japanese puns into English. It was bad enough that a more faithful fan translation was made.

Looking at the page history, I see that aquagon has been edit-warring over that entry. It was years ago so I won't bother with a notifier, but we should keep an eye on it.

[up][up] The proposed re-write is still a bit bash-y. I suggest this:

"Blind Idiot" Translation: The official translation by NISA has received some criticism for making characters seemingly come off wrong and missing or not correctly going over plot points, as well as for not translating the Japanese puns into English.

Removed the BIT entry, since as Jay said [up], its misuse of BIT.

BTW, what happened to the TRS for BIT?

Looking through fanfiction stuff, I stumbled across the ymmv Loyalty Among Worlds, which seems to exist largely to bash the fanfiction's author. Particularly The Scrappy entry, which looks like blatant misuse since, Self-Insert or not, the author in real life is not a character who can be troped.

There remains a foothold out of this mire — now climb.

Would it be possible to remove Sonic Labyrinth from the complaining sandbox? I cleaned some complaining back in October.

[up] Anyone can remove pages from the complaining sandbox if the complaining has been sufficiently cleaned up.

I guess I kind of figured that. My question was moreso, does anyone agree that the pages are fixed enough that the game should be removed from the list?

From Mistaken for Racist's Comic Book Folder:

Let's just note up front that comic book heroes in the 1940s and 1950s were almost exclusively either Caucasian (or at least looked Caucasian, e.g. Superman) or their ethnicity was their defining characteristic, and usually not in a good way (Whitewash Jones). Sometime in the 1960s, the comic book companies discovered there was an ethnic market out there they could skim more dimes from. The first batch of non-white heroes that were more than simply stereotypes tended to have names that let you know right off the bat what you were dealing with ("Black Lightning"). Then someone with slightly more of a clue realized that just shading someone darker and putting "black" (or "El" for Hispanic heroes) in front of their names was maybe not all that much better. Cue stories with all the subtlety of a chainsaw about how racism is bad, kids! And expect heroes who are and have always been very level-headed suddenly realizing in an anvilicious manner just how racist they've been for all these years. A lot of the stories below hail from this time period.

Oh boy, where to even begin? Well first problem is that the example is way to general, vague and not specific to any particular comic book or graphic novel, Second it is incredibly bashy and weirdly personal. Third is is a big wall of text that makes the comic folder look unwieldy and unprofessional. Permission to cut please?

Beware, I live!

TheProblemWithLicensedGames.Anime And Manga has a few unexcusable examples that need a cleanup.

  • Kinnikuman: Muscle Tag Match, one of the earliest anime licensed games released for the Famicom/NES. The anime hadn't been released outside Japan, but the toyline had been distributed as M.U.S.C.L.E., which gave Bandai an excuse to export this pathetic excuse for a wrestling game under that name. The eight characters all share the same basic moves and differ mostly in how ugly their sprites are. Despite all of this the game sold 1 million copies in Japan and therefore lead to a flood of bad Famicom games based on anime and toys. It also has a place in NES history since it was the second third-party release for the NES.
  • The PC88 version of NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind game (see the horror here) is so bad that it makes E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial on the Atari 2600 look like DuckTales on the NES. The PC-6001 & MSX versions of said games are more playable, but the PC-6001 was not made for gaming, and what Konami, HAL Laboratory and Compile were dishing out for the MSX were far better than this. There was no reason to bother with this game when there were much better games for the MSX coming out from said companies. It doesn't help Hayao Miyazaki hates video games as well, and did even before said games were made, going back to his days at Telecom Animation Film back in 1978. This game, suffice to say, did little to convince him that video game adaptations of his films were worth the extra effort.

Number one fan of characters that appear only once and ultimately were a recurring character either in disguise or trying a new image.

[up][up][up] I would cut the whole example due to, after that excruciating read, I still don't see who was mistaken for racist.

I only know M.U.S.C.L.E. from what I've seen in videos, but how does this sound?

Kinnikuman: Muscle Tag Match for the Famicom, or M.U.S.C.L.E., on the NES was the first Famicom game published by Bandai, and it shows. It is a wrestling game with eight different playable characters, but all of them share the same small pool of basic moves. Thanks to a combination of the poor controls and the tiny character sprites, it's near impossible to do anything intentionally as you fight your opponent, making the game difficult to play properly.
