YMMV / Loyalty Among Worlds

Go To

  • Broken Aesop: Part of Darrel's character arc in Season 1 of the fanfiction is about him learning to be loyal to himself as well as others by having him wonder if he should pursuit a relationship with Anne and break up with Sasha or not. While it's an interesting concept, it is executed horrendously, as Darrel ultimately confesses his feelings for Anne and kisses her on lips while still being in a relationship with Sasha. Even though Sasha was a bad girlfriend for Darrel, this still goes against his namesake and makes him a cheater.
  • Designated Hero: Despite his last name being "Loyaliat", Darrel isn't that loyal as he dances with, confesses his love to, and kisses Anne while still being in a relationship with Sasha. note  He also has moments of being selfish and hypocritical towards the Calamity Trio whenever their mistakes are exposed. One infamous example is when he unsympathetically calls out Marcy's selfishness while he himself cheats on Sasha. In the same infamous moment, Darrel also yells at Marcy for hiding the fact that her family was planning on moving away while he himself wasn't honest with the girls about his mother's terminal illness long before they ended up in Amphibia.
  • Improved Second Attempt: The rewrite is considered several orders of magnitude superior than the original as the pacing is more managable.note , Darrel and his family being more fleshed out and having the chemistry between Darrel and the canon trio being better developed as opposed to it just being an info dump in the original.
  • Narm:
    • Cronaxx's death is framed to be as heartfelt and shocking as Marcy being impaled in the same scene, however, given Cronaxx being incredibly annoying and two-dimensional personality, it actually ended with viewers being part relieved because of an annoying character finally being killed off, but frustrated because it was shoehorned into the same scene and circumstances as Marcy being impaled, with the two of them awkwardly skewered together.
    • Several animatics have been created to tie in with certain scenes from the fanfic, with many people describing them as amateurish for the most part.
      • One example is in the animatic Loyalty to Friends in which Darrel explains to Tint that due to her saving him, he must save Marcy in return. While it's meant to be heartfelt and emotional; the poor voice acting, awkward line delivery, the amateurish slideshow of his edited screenshots that follow, and Final Fantasy music all make it come across as more awkward and unintentionally funny.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: This may have been written off as a typical Self-Insert Fic if not for A) said self-insert being shipped with Anne Boonchuy; and B) the author being an adult man while Anne is canonically thirteen years old. Both of these points have led to people accusing him of implicitly shipping himself with an underage girl. While AdmiralDT8 has denied it being the case, it’s done little (if anything) to quell the backlash. Later on, he deleted his work on his profile, and the rewrite of the fic has Darrel renamed to Dyllan.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: The rewritten versions of Tint, Cronaxx and Dyllan/Darrel are seen as vastly superior to their original counteparts with many of the issues that plagued those characters having been fixed.
  • The Scrappy:
    • Cronaxx Tormak, the uncle of Tint Tormak and mentor to Darrel Loyalitat, is considered to be incredibly annoying due to his corny ham-fisted attempts at inspirational quotes and wisdom that make readers want him to shut up forever.
    • In the original, Darrel Loyalitat counted as one due to him always being in the right, is liked by practically every character and gets magic powers out of seemingly thin air.
    • Tint Tormak due to him having little personality outside of being a wannabe Sprig while also having some of Darrel's annoying goody-goodyness traits.
  • Squick:
    • AdmiralDT8 ships his self-insert with Anne, which has led to most of the Amphibia fandom expressing disgust and keeping their distance from him, as Anne is underage while he is an adult. Adding fuel to the fire, he drew Anne pregnant with his child as part of a Nativity recreation in 2020 and as part of Sorcerers Of Signal Hill.
    • What's more is that not only was Sasha in a relationship with Darrel up until chapter 23, it was revealed in Chapter 67 that Marcy Wu had feelings for Darrel at some point. Essentially, that in turn, comes across as AdmiralDT8 writing himself into a harem involving teenage girls.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: While the reveal of Marcy's Dark Secret was supposed to be as impactful in the fanfiction as in canon, Darrel callously calls out Marcy for taking him away from his family and his dying mother. However, Marcy had no idea that his mother was sick at all before Darrel shouts it out to her, but the narrative seems to portray it like she always knew, and Darrel calls her a selfish brat for her actions. While Marcy did do a selfish thing, she had sympathetic reasons for doing it. But Darrel tends to hide a lot of plot important secrets from everyone else that could've prevented these turn of events, thus making him a hypocrite in this situation.
