YMMV / Hinowa ga Crush!

Go To

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: Maruge, a cowardly commander and having some rather lustful feelings towards Hisame, was understandably not well liked. However, his rather abrupt death and wishing to see Hisame one more time, was surprisingly tragic to some.
  • Anti-Climax Boss:
    • Despite being one of the Ten Stars Moegi and her Battle Harem are easily dispatched by a temporarily symptom suppressed Akame.
    • Earlier, in spite of being a candidate to one of the Ten Stars, Kyoukotsu is easily beheaded by Hisame with little fanfare.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Along with the original Akame ga Kill, the series was popular enough outside of Japan that once it was cancelled the illustrator offered a detailed explanation and apology to foreign fans, thanking them for helping it last for a while longer.
  • Magnificent Bitch: Yomihime is a mysterious woman who joins the Tenrou Nation in order to train her skills by fighting strong enemies. Introduced in a mission to recover the decapitated head of a fallen general, Yomihime defeats the original Hinowa and kills her while acknowledging her skills in both combat and leadership. Years later, Yomihime confronts Hinowa's daughter and fights Akame, surprised at her strength and is forced to retreat. Ordered to work with the murderous sadist Kyoukotsu, Yomihime ignores his more revolting crimes and manages to genuinely befriend him after discovering his military talents and crafting a dangerous strategy that costs the lives of many soldiers from the Soukai Nation. When the Elder's Class kill Kyokutsu and stop the attack, Yomihime mourns him and keeps his last gift despite her dislike of it. Returning to Tenrou to rethink their invasion plans, it is shown that Yomihime is respected by her fellow Ten Stars generals, having fully earned her title.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
  • No Yay: Maruge's insane crush on Hisame, given that he's a Gonk and much older man and that Hisame's a young man. Thankfully, he's not aware of this and it doesn't go beyond the fanboying.
  • The Scrappy: Maruge, Hinowa and co's superior is not well-liked for his cowardly behavior, ineptitude for his position, and his rather creepy obsession with Hisame. Some fans applauded when a member of the Tenrou Army kills him shortly after Hisame's death.
  • Squick:
  • Tear Jerker: Several over the course of the series.
    • Hinowa's mother's first death and later how Hinowa reacts to this by taking on her name.
    • Kobu's death, after spending most of the series being pessimistic about his position in life, the moment he finally gets hope, he's killed for it.
    • Shion's death at the hands of Waniba, with the latter had seemingly had taken his defeat well, but in actuality, turned to the enemies' side after losing to Hisame.
    • Hisame's death, he had managed to find love and a high position, but when he faces Zuou, he's cut down with little fanfare.
      • Rinzu's subsequent rape by Zuou and his display of barrels with Hisame's dismembered corpse to her. A few chapters later, she sees her father being executed.
    • The Strange Elder, revealed to be Enji, a former advisor to Tenrou, having left after being disgusted with Zuou's ways is executed. He had been very helpful to Hisame and the others, especially Akame.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Moegi is hyped up to be one of the Ten Stars, the Tenrou's top warriors with an interesting personality, but she is then quickly cut down by Akame as part of The Worf Effect.
    • Hisame was building up to be his own character with his Love Interest being married to him and things looking like he was going to become more prominent, only to be cut down by Zuou.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: In general, once the manga went back to it's old roots of Akame ga Kill's constant reliance on irredeemable acts and depravity. Many fans were hoping the author would have at least gone for a different story style, instead of rinse and repeat. Which was initially seeming to be the case as it seemed to be heading into a war drama scenario until the end of the first third, but after Zuou conquers the good guy's base, it once again treads back to a band of rebels dealing with variously Obviously Evil corrupt government leaders.
  • Too Cool to Live: Hisame, the most promising of Hinowa's group, managing to immediately get promoted to a high rank within Soukai's nation, as well as being able to defeat a Ten Stars candidate and then married to Rinzu. He is then immediately killed by Zuou to establish the latter as a Hero Killer.
  • Tough Act to Follow: Following behind the moderately popular Akame ga Kill!, Hinowa Ga Crush hadn't managed to keep up with its predecessor due to several factors, having a main cast of characters whose personality traits and abilities aren't as developed as Night Raid's and the main villains not being as engaging as the Empire, especially General Esdeath and the Jaegers, with potential threats being dealt with with little fanfare.
  • The Woobie: Rinzu. She is brutally raped and deflowered, is forced to see the dismembered remains of her lover, sees her father executed and is now a prisoner concubine to be raped every day by Zuou at his leisure.
