Western Animation / Porky in Egypt

Go To

"Porky in Egypt" is a 1938 Looney Tunes short starring Porky Pig and directed by Bob Clampett.

While vacationing in Egypt, Porky rides his camel Humpty Bumpty into the desert, only for both to overheat and succumb to "desert madness".

"Porky in Egypt" provides examples of:

  • Butter Face: Near the beginning, a shapely woman struts by with her face covered with a veil. She then lifts her veil to reveal an old hag's face underneath, just to freak the audience out.
  • The Face of the Sun: As the heat intensifies, the sun briefly gains a face that growls and breathes fire.
  • Freak Out: Humpty Bumpty has a major breakdown while suffering from "desert madness" and goes utterly insane. It ended up becoming the inspiration for the yak freak-out from the Ren & Stimpy episode "The Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen".
"Partner, we're lost! We'll rot and become bones! WHITE, CHALKY BO-O-O-O-ONES!"
  • Hearing Voices: As he goes crazy from the heat, Humpty Bumpty hears otherworldly voices calling his name.
  • Here We Go Again!: Porky and Humpty Bumpty make it back to town by the end of the cartoon, and appear to be safe, but then Porky is now revealed to have "desert madness".
  • Hollywood Mirage: Porky sees Humpty Bumpty bathing in Palm Springs and tries to jump into the pool, but he ends up diving face-first into sand.
  • Napoleon Delusion: At the end, Porky goes insane and puts on a Napoleon hat.
  • Sanity Slippage: "THE CAMELS ARE COMING! THE CAMELS ARE COMING!"
  • Shout-Out: Humpty's nervous breakdown was inspired by the film The Lost Patrol. During this manic episode, Humpty Bumpty quotes Rudyard Kipling's poem Boots, briefly becomes a caricature of Lew Lehr, and believes he's The Lone Ranger. The scene where he's bathing in an oasis mirage has him imitate comedian Hugh Herbert's laugh.
  • Smelly Skunk: A multi-humped tour camel is attached to a humped trailer carrying two skunks on it.
