Trivia / Uncharted (2022)

Go To

  • Banned in China: The movie was pulled from all movie theaters in the Philippines and Vietnam due to the South China Sea maps that depict them as belonging to China.
  • California Doubling: The scenes shot in both New York and the Philippines were done in Germany and Spain.
  • Cast the Runner-Up: When the project first began development, Mark Wahlberg was initially cast as Nathan Drake. When the project was retooled into an origin story for the character over a decade later, Wahlberg returned to the film as Sully.
  • Deleted Scene:
    • The moment shown in the trailers of Nate and Sully's first meeting at the bar.
    • A scene cut from the beach resort sequence confirms Nate and Chloe hooked up.
  • Directed by Cast Member: The Canadian French dub was directed by Manuel Tadros, who also voiced Santiago Moncada.
  • Dueling Works: Thanks to its constant Release Date Changes, Uncharted ended up competing with The Lost City. Both are intended as whimsical, humorous and over-the-top adventure movies in exotic backdrops. By the box office alone, Uncharted is a clear victor, however, The Lost City got significantly better reviews and while not as successful commercially, still did very well in the box office.
  • Fake American: American Nathan Drake is played by British actor Tom Holland.
  • Fake Australian: Indian-Australian Chloe Frazer is played by Pakistani-American actress Sophia Ali.
  • Fake Scot: Yorkshire-born Steven Waddington plays The Scotsman with a heavy Scottish accent.
  • The Other Darrin: As a result of being a film and a prequel of sorts from the games, many foreign dubs had replacements for many of the voice actors from the games:
    • The Latin American Spanish dub had a necessary one, as the games were dubbed in Argentina, and, since Mexico rarely allows non-Mexican dubs in Mexican theaters, the entire dub was done in that country instead.
    • Likewise, the Japanese dub also had a different cast, due to the characters being younger than their video game counterparts.
  • Release Date Change:
    • The film's first confirmed release date was June 10th, 2016, before the film was delayed to June 30th, 2017, and was removed from Sony Pictures' release calendar in September 2016, a month before Shawn Levy was hired to direct. Sony then set a release for December 18th, 2020, first under Dan Trachtenberg as director and then under Travis Knight. Knight's departure as director a few months before filming led to the film being delayed yet again to March 5th, 2021.
    • Further changes were then made due to the COVID-19 Pandemic disrupting production, with the film moving from March 5th to October 8th, 2021, before being moved up to July 16th and being pushed back again to February 11th, 2022, and then finally to February 18th, 2022.
  • Saved from Development Hell:
    • Let's put it this way: the film has been bouncing around for so long, Mark Wahlberg was initially to play Nathan Drake, only for a decade to pass in the meanwhile without anything happening. By the time actual production started, Wahlberg was old enough to play Sully. And that's just the tip of an iceberg of issues here.
    • Work first began on an Uncharted film adaptation in 2008, and numerous directors and writers were attached to the project at various points before Ruben Fleischer finally signed on to direct, and filming began in 2020. Despite its own share of issues, it ultimately delivered a movie.
  • The Shelf of Movie Languishment: Filming wrapped in early 2020, original release date was for Christmas 2020... and then an entire slate of Release Date Changes happened, to avoid Covid-related issues. Ultimately, the film arrived to cinemas in mid-February 2022.
