Roleplay / Digimon Inheritance The Search For Courage

Digimon Inheritance: A Heroic Lion's Turbulent Times is a quest on Sufficient Velocity.com, created by user drexal15. It follows the life of Verge, a cowardly Drimogemon living in the Digital World.

Digimon Inheritance: A Heroic Lion's Turbulent Times provides examples of:

  • A Dog Named "Dog": Some digimon choose names for themselves, but others just go by their species' name.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: Downplayed with Virus Types. They're naturally more aggressive and often have a strong urge to fight, but it's not all-consuming.
  • Body Horror: As a Digimon quest there are a lot of examples as the Mechanorimon that are dug up by the Goblimon mining expedition and used as mechs are essentially huge, stitched-together corpses being used as vehicles or the Raremon the failed experiments of the Lesser Spirit Temple of Steel.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Verge and Sparks engage to this from time to time, and Schwartz do this whenever he interacts with someone.
  • Born-Again Immortality: All in this quest Digimon have Type IV. When killed, they normally turn into digi-eggs and are reborn (though don't normally recover their past life memories).
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Both Played Straight and Inverted as the Cthulu in question broke the Avalon Program so hard that Vulcanusmon was required to repair it, but it also resulted in the Cthulu breaking his hand in the process.
  • Calling Your Attacks: A staple in Digimon and this quest is no exception.
  • Crapsaccharine World: The Digital world is colorful and diverse with vast unspoiled landscapes and countless types of fantastical creatures... but it's filled with endless, eternal conflict between digimon, who are all sapient. The rules of the Digital World regarding digivolution, loading another mon's data, reincarnation, the speed at which digimon change and develop, and so on are essentially built from the ground up to encourage constant deadly conflict. The vast majority of digimon are killed within a single year of their birth. A big theme of the work is how living in a violent world changes and influences people.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Sometimes played straight, sometimes averted, its played straight with Drunky and Ardat being a Angewomon and a Lady-Devimon respectively and averted with Gloaming's former Rinkmon now a Cyberdramon in all her muscular glory.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The most common result of a digimon trying to fight another mon that is a higher evolutionary level than them one on one. Sometimes averted if the former is strong for their level and the latter weak.
  • Cycle of Revenge: One of the themes of the work. The prologue starts with two groups who are just trying to survive clashing, and ends with the violent destruction of the rookie village. Sparks and Verge, out for revenge, then kill Fugamon, the person indirectly responsible for Count being sent to the village, which in turn makes the young Kotemon/Dinohumon/Knightmon want to kill them, though after character development and character interaction, the Dino-Knightmon makes peace with Verge, though he still wants Sparks' head.
  • Dark Is Evil: Played straight with many of the Gloaming's members as the majority of them are Virus types and have a dark coloration with specific examples being Count the Vamdemon who destroyed the prologue village or Skull-Satamon who participated in said slaughter and mortally wounded Scratch.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: That said its not a unbreakable rule as not all Virus types are evil which also applies to Black versions of Digimon with specific examples being Gnaw the Black Were-Garurumon, Beat the Black Jewel-Beemon or Schwartz the Duskmon/Baalmon who has the Red and Black and Evil All Over motif.
  • Evolutionary Levels: This is a major facet of Digimon so of course it would be present in a quest based on it.
  • Family of Choice: This mindset is deliberately cultivated in the Rookie village by having Rookie digimon take care of In-Training "wards" until the latter digivolves.
  • Forever War: The Blessed Host vs. The Gloaming. It's been going on for eighty years, and both sides have been massively reduced in both number and overall power projection. It's implied that Astamon has caused this intentionally, since a war of attrition benefits the Gloaming more.
  • Freudian Trio: The Gigadramon hunting trio with Xia as the Id, Boy the Ego, and Ex-Veemon as the Super-Ego.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: It happened several times throughout the quest, with Sorcerimon at the Prologue village, Scratch's which allowed Verge to evolve, Angemon for his pupil Pit, and Leomon's Sacrificial Lion trope is implied to be in full effect, as Word of God states that Leomon's are the most common Champion Digimon there are but the amount of Leomon Ultimates encountered are less than a dozen.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Long ago, the Blessed Host took control of most of the world due to the Three Great Angels being the strongest mega-level digimon in the world and working together. Nowadays, their numbers are far lower, most of the city-states generally ignore them, and they're fighting a total war against the Gloaming to try and regain scraps of power.
  • Logical Weakness: And Logical Resistance too. In addition to the expected Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors, certain miscellaneous features can affect how certain abilities or hazards affect a mon. For example, Verge has thick skin and dense, heavy fur, which makes him quite resistant against the cold, and even provides a minor resistance to ice-based attacks.
  • Moral Myopia: The Vortex Isle team in the Caputal Tyranno tournament suffered from one.
  • Story Arc: The story is rather currently split into three major arcs each corresponding with a Digimon Stage:
    • Prologue/Rookie/The Search For Courage: Covers Verge's life in the Rookie Village with his friends and family, and after its destruction his recruitment and career in the Blessed Host as a one-eyed Drimogemon with his best friend Sparks.
    • Champion/ Grizzly Days: This part covers his career in the Host as Bellator Gryzmon following his Mentor Scratch's sacrifice, as he battles the forces of Gloaming.
    • Ultimate/ A Heroic Lion's Turbulent Times: The current arc which covers his stint as Bellator of the Host, his transfer to Bulwark as Chevalier and his current adventures.
  • Really 700 Years Old: The expected lifespan of Mega level Digimon provided they don't die of unnatural causes.
  • Reduced to Dust: A variation where the dust is data but this is what happens when Digimon are destroyed which they either burst quickly or disintegrate slowly.
  • Reincarnation: What happens when Digimon die they turn into Digi-Eggs which hatches into their reincarnation.
  • Time Abyss: The lifespan of certain Digimon types like Machines or Royal Knights.
  • The Ageless: What certain Digimon Megas are like the Three Great Angels or the Olympos XII.
  • The Power of Friendship: A given since this is based on Digimon a shonen series, with the most explicit example of this being the jogress evolution of Verge with both Sparks and Pit, which resulted in Flaremon and Apollomon respectively.
  • Tournament Arc: The Caputal Tyranno arc is called one but functions more of a team style free for all.
  • We Are as Mayflies: Digimon live short, violent lives due to the nature of the digital world, and while high level digimon can live very long lives, it's extremely rare for this to happen, as they usually end up being killed by other digimon.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: How Flux Mountain works.
