Tropes

  • Abusive Parents: Mama Clanton tortures Clio via her wounded hand for acting without her orders, and gives Billy over to the Reaper for saving Wynonna.
  • Artistic License – History: The Clantons did fight the Earps at the OK Corral, but weren't (so far as anyone knows) in command of any demonic forces.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Repeated references to Wynonna losing Peacemaker.
    • Doc refers to Rule #1 being "don't work with the enemy," but Wynonna reminds him that (with them at least) it's triple check the birth control.
    • Wynonna references that the Black Badge office at the Sheriff's station currently isn't under their control.
  • Ensign Newbie: Jeremy's new boss transferred from the Department of Fisheries.
  • Fantastic Racism: Jeremy is hiding his nature and history from the new Black Badge because they hate everything supernatural.
  • Force-Field Door: Wynonna walks into a circle surrounded by a force-field, trapping her for the Reaper.
  • Heroic BSoD: Wynonna is so overwhelmed by the Reaper's pure hate for her, and her inability to fight it without Peacemaker, that she's left a trembling, tearful mess.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Billy marks himself in Rachel's place, which stops the Reaper from attacking Wynonna.
  • I Call It "Vera": Jeremy calls the BFG he gives Wynonna "Antoni".
  • Internal Reveal: Wynonna tells Jeremy that she doesn't have Peacemaker anymore.
  • Jump Scare: Waverly almost walks into a tent with the Reaper in it. Comes with Five-Second Foreshadowing.
  • Kinky Cuffs: Wynonna handcuffs herself to a crate so Doc can't steal it. Then they flirt.
  • Mama Bear: The Clanton matriarch doesn't want her son having anything to do with Earps.
  • Modesty Bedsheet: Nicole and Waverly somehow end up with this on the kitchen floor.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: The Reaper breaks the handcuffs holding Wynonna, allowing her to escape.
  • No-Sell: Bullets only knock the Reaper down for a moment.
  • Off with His Head!: The Reaper decapitates a guard early in the episode.
  • The Power of Hate: Wynonna can feel the pure hatred that the Reaper has for her.
  • Prayer of Malice: The Clantons' version of saying grace is to thank their ancestors for fueling their hatred for the Earps, and swearing vengeance on them.
  • Precision F-Strike: Wynonna when properly introducing herself to Jeremy's boss.
    "I'm Wynonna fucking Earp."
  • The Reveal:
    • The Judge from the first episode hates Wynonna so much because she's a Clanton, and she's the one who dripped blood on Wynonna's photo at the beginning of the episode (marking her for the Reaper).
    • The Reaper is Ike Clanton, who fought Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday at the OK Corral.
  • Scream Discretion Shot: Billy is heard screaming, but is never shown being attacked by the Reaper. Instead, the camera shows his mother walking away from him and then talking to the rest of her family inside.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Fleabag gets two, one from Jeremy comparing the Black Badge uniforms to the iconic jumpsuit and Wynonna asking Doc if he's heard of the show everyone's talking about.
    • Wynonna compares herself to Cate Blanchett in Carol.
    • Billy says he found a DVD of Bring It On and quotes from it.
    • Nicole claims she's looking for a sword for her Halloween costume of She-Ra.
      Waverly: *gasp* I would die.
    • Jeremy's gun is named Antoni, because, "If you want something guac'd, you call Antoni."
  • Some Kind of Force Field: The edges of the trap Wynonna walks into crackle with light when someone touches it.
  • Visible Invisibility: Only those marked for the Reaper can see it, but the audience can the whole time.
  • We Do Not Know Each Other: Jeremy pretends that he doesn't know Wynonna particularly well because he worries they'll face Fantastic Racism from his superiors.
