Recap / Wednesday S1E1 "Wednesday’s Child Is Full of Woe"

Go To

When a deliciously wicked prank gets Wednesday expelled, her parents ship her off to Nevermore Academy, the boarding school where they fell in love.

Tropes:

  • 1-Dimensional Thinking: The one unlucky schmuck who gets swarmed by the piranhas likely would have escaped if he'd swum to the side of the pool like his fellows, rather than swimming all the way to the ladder at the other end.
  • Asshole Victim: You won't feel too bad for Rowan as he's mauled to death, since he's in the middle of trying to kill Wednesday over something his mother drew 25 years ago that may or may not be depicting her.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment:
    • Wednesday is asked how she would feel with "attempted murder" on her permanent record. She responds that she would feel terrible, because everyone would know she couldn't follow through.
    • When her parents call and ask how her first week at Nevermore went, Wednesday thinks on all the terrible events that have happened thus far. She then begrudgingly admits to her parents that she's starting to enjoy her time there.
  • Blood Is Squicker in Water: The pool fills with blood as one unlucky boy is caught by the piranha that Wednesday unleashed.
  • Cool Car: The Addamses have a sweet gothic car, complete with a secret hatch on the undercarriage for Thing.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Wednesday got expelled from her old school for putting two packs of piranhas into the swim team's pool during practice because they stuffed Pugsley into a locker.
  • Expelled from Every Other School: Prior to Nevermore Academy, Wednesday had been expelled from eight other schools in the last five years.
  • Groin Attack:
    • The one student who doesn't escape the pool in time gets his groin munched on by the piranha.
    • The first pilgrim-dressed bully who tries to manhandle Wednesday gets kneed in the groin for his troubles.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: As she prepares to take revenge on the bullies who had stuffed Pugsley into his locker, Wednesday declares that nobody gets to torture her brother except her.
  • I've Got an X, and I'm Not Afraid to Use It!: When Wednesday tries threatening Enid so she'd stop her music, the werewolf girl shows off her retractable fingernails.
Enid: Don't mess with me! This kitty got claws, and I'm not afraid to use them.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: A student approaches Enid to gossip about Wednesday, oblivious to the fact that Enid's been giving Wednesday the tour. Enid steps to the side ever-so-slightly to reveal Wednesday, allowing Wednesday to correct his gossip.
  • Kids Are Cruel: When she was six, a group of kids purposefully ran over Wednesday's pet scorpion. She's refused to cry since that day, since crying doesn't solve problems.
  • Little Miss Badass: The three pilgrim bullies get their asses handed to them by Wednesday, even though she's shorter than they are.
  • Mythology Gag: This isn't the first time Pugsley was introduced tied in rope and gagged with an apple. In the 1991 live movie, Pugsley was introduced that way, except it was thanks to Wednesday forcing him into it instead of a group of bullies stuffing him into a locker that Wednesday release him from.
    • Like in the 1993 film, Wednesday has a very low opinion of the Pilgrims.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Wednesday tries to save Rowan from his prophecized death. Not only does he try to kill her for another prophecy indicating she'll destroy Nevermore, he's mauled to death by the monster anyway.
  • The Nose Knows: Wednesday claims she figured out Thing was spying on her when she smelled the ingredients in his favorite hand cream.
  • Piranha Problem: Wednesday retaliates against Pugsley's bullies by releasing two bags of piranha into the swimming pool. All but one manage to climb out in time, and the unlucky straggler merely loses a testicle.
  • Right Behind Me: Ajax comes running to Enid in his first scene to warn her about the rumors he's heard about her new roommate Wednesday Addams, including an inaccurate claim that she eats the flesh of her victims. Enid's face is all but screaming these words as he's blabbering to her. All she can manage is just to step aside and show him when he stops talking.
  • Rule of Funny: Where did Wednesday get two bags of vicious piranha in half an hour at most? How do the piranha survive in the chlorinated water once they're dumped in the swimming pool? Who cares; enjoy the carnage!
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: At their interview, Principal Weems states that Nevermore doesn't normally accept new students mid-term, but they have made an exception. However, this is shortly after she reveals that she and Wednesday's mother were roommates when they attended Nevermore Academy together, which suggests she might have pulled strings as a favor to Morticia.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Wednesday has a vision of Rowan's death and attempts to save him, and in doing so causes a series of actions leading directly to his death.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Unlike previous versions of The Addams Family, which would have written off Wednesday unleashing ravenous piranhas on Pugsley's bullies as yet another example of Amusing Injury or Rule of Funny, this time there are serious consequences. There's a copious amount of blood as the piranhas attack and one of the boys ends up losing a testicle. Not only does Wednesday get expelled, but Dalton's family also wanted her charged with attempted murder; it's implied that she got off lightly because of her family's money. Her parents are actually concerned by what she did, if only because the aforementioned charges won't look good on her record and could harm her future, and pack her off to boarding school to try and help her, where Principal Weems forces her to attend therapy sessions with Dr. Kinbott.
  • This Is My Side: Wednesday removes the bright film from her side of the dorm room window to indicate that she and Enid are splitting the room.
  • Title Drop: Morticia mentions the titular nursery rhyme phrase when explaining the origins of Wednesday's name.
  • The Unreveal: At one point, Enid asks where the rest of Thing (the detached hand) is. Wednesday simply says it's "one of the great Addams family mysteries".
  • Victory by First Blood: Wednesday challenges Bianca to a fencing duel to knock her down a peg. After they both win a round, Wednesday opts to have them both remove their facemasks and blade protectors and so the winner is decided by who draws blood first. Wednesday loses, much to her own shock.
  • Villainous Rescue: The monster that's been killing hikers saves Wednesday from Rowan by mauling him to death.
