Recap / Wednesday S1E2 "Woe Is the Loneliest Number"

Go To

The sheriff questions Wednesday about the night's strange happenings. Later, Wednesday faces off against a fierce rival in the cutthroat Poe Cup race.

Tropes:

  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Wednesday demonstrates her vocal range by letting out a note beyond the range of human hearing, cracking the DJ's glasses among other things.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Wednesday one-ups Xavier's archery skills by tossing an apple in the air, nocking her bow, and shooting the apple into the bullseye.
  • Mythology Gag: The solution to Poe's riddle is "snap twice," clearly an homage to the signature "Addams Family Theme" snaps.
  • Practical Effects: Based on video reactions, they really did use a sound only dogs can hear.
  • Shapeshifter: Weems is revealed to be one, using her power to make it appear as if Rowan wasn't killed and then has "him" expelled a day later so she won't have to keep up the act.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The four teams competing in the Edgar Allan Poe Cup are named after some of the writer's works: The Pit and the Pendulum, The Black Cat, Amontillado and The Gold Bug.
    • The cat girl costumes worn by members of team Black Cat are similar to Catwoman's suit in the old Batman TV series. Members of team Amontillado wear a Villainous Harlequin costume and the makeup worn by one of them makes him look like one of The Joker's modern incarnations. These references could even be a nod to Tim Burton's involvement with Batman movies.
  • Sirens Are Mermaids: One of Bianca's siren friends is sinking boats to help her win the Poe Cup. His monster form, as seen when he gets in the water, is a pretty standard-looking merman.
  • Smash Cut: As soon as Wednesday learns about the cat costume, it cuts right to after she's put it on. She refused to paint whiskers on her face, though.
  • There Are No Rules: The Edgar Allan Poe Cup race has conditions for victory, but no rules for conduct along the way, allowing competitors to freely sabotage each other before or during the race.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Wednesday gets more wide-eyed when she hears there's a costume involved in the race.
  • Weaponized Car: Or canoe, rather. The canoes feature net launchers, axes mounted on the side, and spikes to pierce other boats.

Enid and Wednesday

Take Wednesday Addams, one of the most cynical and morbid girls in fiction, and make her roommates with a cheery, blonde werewolf. This is the result.
