Recap / Wednesday S1E3 "Friend or Woe"

Go To

Wednesday stumbles on a secret society. During Outreach Day, Nevermore's outcasts mingle with Jericho's normies in Pilgrim World. Fudge, anyone?

Tropes:

  • Accidental Declaration of Love: While Enid is talking to Ajax, her crush, in the antique store, she lets it slip during her comparison of a rat and a squirrel couple of taxidermied animals as working out because it would be like "Us... Them!!! Against the world...".
  • Anachronism Stew: In-Universe example; the main selling product of Pilgrim World is fudge, which is presented as an authentic Pilgrim product. But as Wednesday herself points out to some tourists, fudge was not actually invented until over 2.5 centuries after the time of the Pilgrims.
  • Burn the Witch!: In Wednesday's vision, Crackstone rounds up all the outcasts in the old meeting hall, chaining them to the floor. He then locks them inside and orders his men to set fire to the building. Wednesday returns the favor to his statue.
  • Chekhov's Gun: A hobo filches a camera from the curio store in Jericho, and clearly knows how to operate it — when he's attacked by the monster, the camera captures everything.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even Wednesday, the cynic with a love for the morbid and macabre, is horrified by Crackstone's sheer fanatical hatred and him ordering a shack filled with captive "outcasts", likely all innocent people, to be set on fire.
  • Exact Words: When Weems accuses Wednesday of setting the Crackstone statue on fire, she simply responds "My hands are clean." We are then treated to a quick flashback of Thing dumping gasoline into the pool around the statue, having already seen him light the match to start the fire in the first place. Although Wednesday more than likely ordered him to do so.
  • Gratuitous German: Wednesday offers up samples of fudge while speaking in German to some tourists.
Wednesday: Enjoy your "authentic" pilgrim fudge made with cacao beans procured by the oppressed indigenous people of the Amazon. All proceeds go to uphold this pathetic whitewashing of American history. Also, fudge wasn't invented for 258 years. Any takers?
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Goody Addams says as much, saying that the pilgrims, the "normies", are far more monstrous and godless than the "outcasts".
  • Identical Grandson: Goody Addams, Wednesday's ancestor from 400 years ago, looks like a blond version of her, both played by Jenna Ortega.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • This is not the first time Wednesday Addams has shown disdain for the whitewashing of Pilgrim colonialism.
    • Nor the first time she's alluded to the edibility of Girl Scouts.
  • Pensieve Flashback: Unlike her previous visions which were just quick flashes of the past/future going through her mind, Wednesday experiences the lengthy flashback of the Outcast massacre by the pilgrims as if she was living the scene, hiding to not be seen out of reflex. Toward the end, she's even coughing from breathing the smoke, emphasizing how realistic it feels for her.
  • Personalized Pledge: When Wednesday gets accused of setting the statue of Joseph Crackstone on fire (which she did actually do), she says:
Wednesday: I swear on my late scorpion's soul, my hands are clean.
  • Slipped the Ropes: After commenting, at the start of the episode, that the ropes tying her wrists were tight enough to cut off circulation, Wednesday reveals to the secret society kidnapping her that... she freed herself five minutes ago.
  • Taken for Granite: As a gorgon, Ajax has this ability when his snakes are exposed. Enid states she isn't afraid of being stoned, as the effects are temporary. However when taking a shower, Ajax accidentally stones himself when he looks in the bathroom mirror (the towel covering it having fallen off), causing him to miss his date with her.
