Recap / Total Drama: "Pirates of the Cabbagean"

Go To

The Ferocious Trout and the Frogs of Death duel each other with ships and cannons.

Tropes:

  • All Up to You: Zee finds himself being the last member of the Trout standing against all the uneliminated Frogs, leaving it up to him to turn things around. For a minute, it looks like he might succeed... then he misses due to a pelican landing on the wheel and causing it to turn and hit the rocks, making the boat sink.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Subverted. It looks like Zee lost his leg to a shark, but it turns out he has a prosthetic leg. He later reveals that he was born without it, but always invented made up stories about how he "lost his leg" to entertain people.
  • Call-Back: The challenge is reminiscent of the second challenge from "Sweden Sour".
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Frogs Of Death are able to win the challenge in this episode by a huge landslide, due to the Ferocious Trout’s poor performance in the challenge. This is mainly due to Axel kicking Ripper off the ship, several of the contestants mismanaging their cabbage balls, Wayne’s strategy of knocking the opposing team members off first, and Zee ramming his team’s ship into a rock.
  • Edible Ammunition: Chris wasn't allowed to use actual cannonballs, so the cannons are loaded with heads of cabbage.
Chris: Just as deadly, but rich in vitamin K!
  • Epic Fail: Not only did the Ferocious Trout fail to knock a single member of the Frogs Of Death off their ship but Zee also failed spectacularly at knocking down the enemy ship by ramming into a rock instead.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: After Zee gets his leg bitten off by the shark, there's no blood of any kind and Zee is still extremely chill about the whole thing. It turns out that the leg bitten off was fake.
  • Going Down with the Ship: As his boat is finally sinking and him being the last of his team to survive, Zee decides to go down with it, because that's what a "good captain" would do.
  • Layman's Terms: Wayne and Raj explain their strategy in hockey terminology, only switching to more understandable terms when Bowie asks.
  • Misplaced Wildlife: Damien lampshades how the sharks in the lake are great whites, even though living in freshwater should logically kill them.
  • Mistaken for Profound: Wayne's inspiration for his strategy of blasting the other team with the cabbages was because he saw Emma and Bowie purposely trying to hit Chase and assuming it was a strategy rather than Emma just trying to hurt Chase.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Chris calls Caleb the most attractive guy on the planet which would confuse a lot of fans who are used to Chris' vanity and narcissism.
  • Pirate Parrot: Chris and Chef have one that keeps attacking Chef for no reason.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the Disney pirate franchise Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Scary Girl saves Damien from the sharks by reasoning that him never screaming again would be a bad thing.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title of the episode is a wordplay on the insult "shit for brains".
  • Ramming Always Works: Scary Girl has the idea to ram the enemy ship, which would cause a tie. Zee puts the plan into action, but he ends up missing and hitting the rocks instead, sinking his own boat.
  • Ring Out: Wayne's strategy is to knock all the opposing team off the boat, which will allow his team to sink their ship at their leisure. It mostly works.
  • Story-Breaker Power: MK uses the phone she stole from Julia to hijack the confession cam and see what everyone else is saying.
  • Team Killer: Axel kicks Ripper off their team's boat for trying to subvert her authority.
  • Touché: Axel asks why Zee never mentioned having a prosthetic leg. His response is "Probably the same reason you never told me your legs weren't."
    Axel: Fair enough.
  • The Worf Effect: Priya and Axel, both established to be strong competitors, are quickly taken out by Wayne's strategy.
