Recap / Total Drama: "Drown Town Abbey"

Go To

The teams have to work to save one of their own from drowning in a flooding chamber.

Tropes:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: The Frogs of Death have the strategy of saving their strongest player for last so they can end this challenge on a high note, while the Ferocious Trout employ the opposite strategy of going strongest to weakest to psyche out the other team. However, due to both sides misunderstanding who their strongest player is, the Ferocious Trout win when the strategy’s end up reversed.
  • Bears Are Bad News: The rope climbing wall is full of bears, which Chris "forgot" to mention before the bears start attacking the players. Chef himself notes this is his second time doing this before Chris makes it clear he’s doing it on purpose.
  • The Cameo: The Rockers appear in a scene from one of Nichelle's movies.
  • Description Cut: In the confessional, Priya wonders what Scary Girl is thinking. Cut to Scary Girl singing about hiding a dead body.
  • Drowning Pit: Damien and Julia are locked in glass tubes that are slowly filling with water. The teams have to retrieve numbers from an obstacle course and input them into a keypad to release them.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Emma saved Nichelle for last, reasoning that her stunt work would allow her to breeze through the obstacle course once the rest of the team had their turn. It turns out that Nichelle is not only a fraud who uses a stunt double in his late 40's, but is so sheltered that she's not allowed to cross the street without an escort and fails miserably in the challenge.
  • In a Single Bound: Scary Girl doesn't bother with climbing the rope-climbing part of the challenge, opting to jump several times her own height to reach the top in a second.
  • Irony: For both teams during the challenge.
    • Ripper has Millie, Priya and Scary Girl go after him, Chase and Zee, believing that the girls are much weaker than them. Though he was right about Millie due to her lack of experience, both Priya and Scary Girl crush the challenge, leading to the team's victory.
    • Emma has Nichelle go last, seeing her as their strongest challenger who will allow them to win. She completely flunks the challenge and has a breakdown, causing the team to lose (and have her sent home).
  • Ironic Nursery Rhyme:
Scary Girl: If you're gonna hide a body, clap your hands! *clap, clap*
  • The Load: Despite her physical inadequacy, Nichelle nearly gets the number, but then has a mental breakdown that gives Scary Girl enough time to plow through the challenge.
  • Metronomic Man Mashing: Scary Girl smashes a bear around for growling at her.
  • Nerves of Steel: Julia stays calm while in the Drowning Pit, giving advice to Damien on how to keep steady, and encouraging her teammates as they go. She only starts slipping when the water rises past her mouth. In the confessional, she admits to being terrified, but not wanting others to see it.
  • Never My Fault: Nichelle blames her loss on her stunt double Jerry.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Despite how obvious it is that her words are negatively affecting Nichelle and making her breakdown worse, MK can’t resist letting her sarcastic remarks loose even after Emma keeps asking her to stop. This causes her to be put in the bottom 2 for not being a team player, though Nichelle is still seen as the bigger issue and sent home.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Damien tries to quit the show, only for Chris to reveal that the updated contracts now say that contestants who quit owe the show a million dollars, forcing Damien to stay.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: When getting fed up with how dangerous the challenges are, Damien tries to simply quit the show, only for Chris to reveal he will owe the show a million dollars for quitting which forces Damien to find other ways to get eliminated.
  • Straw Misogynist: Ripper sets the girls on their team to go last, reasoning that they'll have a strong lead, blatantly ignoring that Priya and, as it turns out, Scary Girl are far stronger than he, Chase and Zee are.
  • To the Tune of...: Scary Girl sings about hiding a body to the tune of "If You're Happy And You Know It".
