Tropes

  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Rachel first sees Frank, she calls him "Rough Road, as in forty miles of, face like?". Beth jokingly tells Frank that was actually a pretty funny insult and he agrees.
  • Anachronic Order: The night of sex between Beth and Frank shows the beginning, the middle, and the end in various stages.
  • Badass Bystander: Ringo, the bar's bouncer, puts up a pretty good fight against Pilgrim's people and even nets a couple of kills before being killed himself.
  • Bathroom Breakout: Rachel tries this only to be hauled back through the window by Pilgrim's mercs; all it does is ensure she's somewhere out of sight to be interrogated.
  • Blatant Lies: When asked by Frank why she is being attacked, Rachel first tells him that the attackers wanted to party with her and got angry when she said no.
  • Blood Knight: After bringing Beth to the hospital and driving away with Rachel, the latter fearfully asks Frank whether there'll be more attackers. He just angrily grunts that he hopes so.
  • Bullying a Dragon: The drunkard who tries to hit on Beth and then picks a fight with Frank.
  • Camping a Crapper: Pilgrim’s people try to kill Frank in the bar’s restroom.
  • Cold Open: The episode starts with a bloodied Frank and Rachel in a car, driving away from Pilgrim's people, with Frank shooting a few of them.
  • Corrupt Cop: Among Pilgrim's associates is a cop, who is just addressed as 'Lieutenant'. He complains the roadhouse massacre is Not What I Signed on For, but has no choice but to do what Pilgrim says, which is to write it off as a gangland turf war.
  • Cut Apart: Rachel breaks into an unoccupied hotel room that appears to be Frank's when he returns to it the next day. Turns out it's the cleaner about to open the door.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Pilgrim's introduction scene shows him with a roughed up interrogation subject, whom he murders after getting what he wants and saying a prayer while killing him.
  • Exact Words: Pilgrim didn't promise the man he is interrogating in his introduction scene to let him go—he promised to give him peace. Meaning, praying for him while he murders him.
  • Friend to All Children: Trying to avoid a thing, Frank tries to leave early in the morning after hooking up with Beth, only to run into her son, Rex, playing with his toys in the living room. Frank puts the kid at ease and defuses a potentially weird situation by jesting with him about hockey and inviting them both out to breakfast.
Frank: For all you know, I could be a Rangers fan, hey?
  • Grievous Bottley Harm: A drunken bar patron attacks Frank with a broken beer bottle. Unsurprisingly, he get his ass handed to him.
  • How We Got Here: The major part of the episode shows the build-up to the Cold Open.
  • Improvised Armor: Frank uses his belt wrapped around his arm for protection.
  • It's Personal: Frank probably would've dropped Rachel off somewhere safe and walked away from the situation, but they hurt Beth when they attacked the bar.
  • Lady Drunk: Dinah Madani is shown taking a Quick Nip while visiting a comatose Billy Russo. After she leaves the room he does an Eye Awaken...
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Frank returning to Beth and helping a Damsel in Distress only gets Beth shot and Frank in trouble again.
  • Not Staying for Breakfast: Frank tries to quietly leave Beth in the morning but after stumbling upon her son he invites them both for breakfast.
  • Playing Drunk: Frank does this when he approaches the restrooms where Pilgrim's mercs are attempting to apprehend Rachel.
  • Rasputinian Death: Ringo gets stabbed and shot several times before he finally goes down.
  • Rescue Romance: Downplayed; Beth and Frank have sex after the latter defends the former's honor at the bar.
  • Shout-Out: Beth compares Frank to Sal Paradise.
  • Single Parents Are Undesirable: Lampshaded when Beth asks if her having a son would scare Frank off. Ironically if it did it would be for completely different reasons than she thinks.
  • Talking in Bed: A variation in that it's intercut with the Sex Montage.
  • Titled After the Song: The title comes from a song by The Doors.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Beth notices the wedding ring Frank wears on a chain round his neck. He explains he used to have a wife and kids.
  • Two Shots from Behind the Bar: There's a sawed-off behind the roadhouse bar, but unfortunately they don't keep it loaded, so Beth has to load it in the midst of a firefight.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Beth's son Rex acts extremely mature for a 9-year-old, being fully aware of the concept of sex for starters. They have the internet these days, as he points out.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Frank has no problems whatsoever with hitting or killing Pilgrim's female enforcers, but as they're doing their best to slice him up you can't blame him.
