Members Only

Original air date: 7/26/2002 (produced in 2001)

Production code: PPG-405

Members Only contains examples of:

  • Annual Title: In-Universe, AWSM Super Summit 2000
  • Broken Pedestal: The girls idolize AWSM, until they show sexist treatment towards them, and refuse them membership.
  • The Cameo: Both Space Ghost and Birdman can be seen in a few frames as members of the AWSM.
  • Captain Ethnic: Members of the Association of World Super Men include Major Glory (from the USA) Big Ben (from England), Mucho Muchacho (from Mexico), Down Unda Mate (from Australia), Ya-Mon (from the Caribbean—possibly Jamaica), Mushu Gai Man (from China) and Mandingo (from Africa).
  • Continuity Nod: The Professor recalls the girls saving the world from being turned into dogs, defeating outer-space invaders, and matching wits with HIM.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Mascumax destroys the AWSM members. And gets destroyed by the girls in return.
  • Crossover: Several of the characters from The Justice Friends are members of AWSM. Major Glory and Valhallen are featured as prominent members, while other like Tiki Torch, and the villainous Comrade Red make small appearances.
  • Eye Recall: It happens twice when Blossom is watching the news on TV.
  • Fun with Acronyms: The Association of World Super Men, and in the end, the Society of Associated Puffketeers.
  • Heel–Face Turn: An offscreen version, the attendees of the AWSM Summit includes Comrade Red and Rasslor, enemies from the "Justice Friends" and "Dial M For Monkey" segments of Dexter's Laboratory.
  • I Was Beaten by a Girl:
    • The men who lost to the Powerpuff girls in the challenges end up getting taunted by the other members of the Association for this.
    • Mascumax flees crying that he lost to little girls.
  • I Want My Mommy!: Mascumax cries for his mother when he flees.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: For rejecting the girls in such a humiliating and cruel manner, the Association members get their asses handed to them by Mascumax (that is until the girls show up and defeat Mascumax) and actually wind up joining the Powerpuff's Association, appropriately named SAP.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": The initial reaction of the girls.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: This could also serve as a reason as to why the AWSM did not allow the Powerpuff Girls to join, but since this is a children's show, pedophilia isn't mentioned.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: The Justice Friends who are part of the AWSM, while egotistical, were never sexist in source material (In fact, one member of the Justice Friends, Miss Spell, was obviously a female), so this episode comes across as controversial to some fans.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: The entirety of the AWSM seem to believe in women taking passive feminine roles and bar the Powerpuff Girls from joining, even after the girls not only pass, but exceed all of their tests.
  • Sore Loser: Another possible reason why they did not accept the girls is because they surpassed them in the challenges.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Despite passing the tests, Major Glory and the rest of the Association decline the girls membership due to their stereotypical views of women, specifically mother and housewife traits. The girls point out Professor Utonium does all that, since they never had a mom as they weren't naturally born.
  • Straw Misogynists: Major Glory and the rest of the association towards the girls.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: "Fools! I feed off your expulsions of manliness! The more manhood you bring against me, the harder I become!"
  • Underwear of Power: Major Glory is given these for this appearance and after rejecting the girls from the group, Buttercup mocks him for wearing his underwear on the outside of his costume.

Certain roles for men...

When asked why they can't join the AWSM, the sexist Major Glory tries to explain by saying there are certain roles for men and certain roles for women. However his analogy falls apart quickly when applied to a group of superpowered girls, who live with a single father who does ALL of the chores (except mowing the lawn and washing the car).

How well does it match the trope?
