Go To

After been released from prison, Rubberband Man decides to reform and also be a superhero for Dakota, but Static refuses to trust him. When Rubberband Man's heroics also draw the attention of Adam's older brother, Ebon, who intends to drag his brother into joining the Meta-Breed.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • An Aesop:
    • Sometimes, even if you're family, it's better to end a toxic relationship with someone if that person keeps trying to bring you down with them.
    • People can change for the better if you just give them a chance and allow them to show you.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: Shiv saying it was Rubberband Man who took down Aquamaria sends Ebon into a violent rage.
  • Batman Gambit: Ebon frames Rubberband Man in order to force him to have nowhere to go but the Meta-Breed. Freeing the rest of his gang is just a bonus.
  • Broken Pedestal: Rubberband Man towards his brother, Ebon. Throughout the episode, Adam had hope that was a chance for his brother to reform, but once he learns Ebon tried to frame him so he would be forced to join his gang, Adam finally sees his brother for what he really is and decides to bring him to justice.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Rubberband Man showing up to help Static against Aquamaria.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Ebon's response when Shiv informs him that Aquamaria was taken down by Rubberband Man. He does not take it well.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Ebon has it clear in this episode to Adam that doesn't go by his real name, Ivan, anymore.
  • Entitled Bastard: Ebon believes he has to right to boss his younger brother around because, with their father gone, he is now the "man of the family".
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Rubberband Man helps Ebon escape Static. Ebon repays this kindness by framing Rubberband Man for breaking the Meta-Breed out of jail.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Static and Rubberband Man after taking down the Meta-Breed.
  • Foil: Ebon serves as one to Sharon in terms of how they treat their younger brothers. While she’s often annoyed by Virgil’s antics, Sharon nevertheless supports her little brother, even cheering him on with great enthusiasm when she (temporarily) figured out that he was Static. Ebon, on the other hand, scoffs at his brother’s dream of being a musician as well as a superhero (especially since the latter position is a direct hindrance to him), and is willing to manipulate him into doing what he wants (whether it be like exploiting his position as the older sibling or framing him).
  • Frame-Up: Ebon breaks the rest of the Meta-Breed out of jail while disguised as Rubberband Man.
  • Given Name Reveal: Ebon's real name is revealed to be Ivan Evans.
  • Green-Eyed Monster:
    • Static over Rubberband Man getting praised for being the new hero in town. He even admits this may be partially why he refuses to accept Rubberband Man as an ally.
    • Sharon also gets in the act, hanging up on Adam when the fame of being a superhero attracts the attention of many fangirls.
  • Hypocrite: While fighting during the climax, Ebon says this is no way to treat family. Rubberband Man lampshades this.
  • I Work Alone: Static when brushing off Rubberband Man at the store.
  • Initiation Ceremony: Aquamaria is sent out to do a robbery and fight Static as tests for joining the Meta-Breed. Thanks to Rubberband Man, she fails and is left to be arrested, though she's later seen with the group when Rubberband Man is brought to the hideout.
  • Lack of Empathy: It's never revealed as to what kind of person Ebon and Rubberband Man's father was before he died, but Ebon doesn't seem to think much of his deceased status other than using it as an excuse to boss his brother around.
  • Man of Kryptonite:
    • Ebon is disappointed by Aquamaria's failure, saying he was so certain her powers would neutralize Static's. This was actually the case before Rubberband Man showed up.
    • Static creates light to weaken Ebon, though Rubberband Man intervenes to help him.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: When Shiv nonchalantly tells Ebon that it was the latter's brother who ruined their latest heist, he does this when he realizes how angry his boss has become over this information. While he doesn't receive any repercussions for delivering this news, he wisely stays out of Ebon's way as he storms out of their hideout to confront Rubberband Man.
  • Once More, with Clarity: A Flashback takes us back to the jail scene where it appears that Rubberband Man had broken in and helped free the Meta-Breed, then, shows the figure that appears to be Rubberband Man is actually Ebon using his powers and a spare costume to look like his brother, the scene this time shows his face, albeit in the shadows, to clarify it's Ebon.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: Static towards Rubberband Man. Back when Static first crossed paths with Rubberband Man, he tried to help Adam, but when Adam let his pride get the better of him, Static just saw him as a criminal and gave up on him. In this episode, Static thinks Rubberband Man will just go back to being a criminal, despite the police even saying he has reformed, especially when he helps Ebon. However, when he discovers that Adam is only helping because they are brothers, and Ebon framed Adam for breaking the Meta-Breed out of jail, Static realizes that Rubberband Man truly has reformed. By the end of the episode, after Ebon and the rest of the Meta-Breed is defeated, Static has accepted Rubberband Man as an ally.
  • The Reveal: Rubberband Man is Ebon's younger brother.
  • Thicker Than Water: Towards their climactic battle, Ebon tries to invoke that "Blood is thicker than water". To that, Rubberband Man responds with "And right and wrong are thicker than blood!"
  • This Is Gonna Suck: After hearing one of his fans squeal at him for giving her an autograph over the phone, Sharon furiously hangs up on Adam. Adam is well aware that the next time he talks to her, she’s not going to be in a good mood. However, by the end of the episode, Adam decides it's worth the risk compared to what Ebon put him through.
  • Villains Out Shopping: During a robbery attempt, Shiv is instead focused on just playing a video game that's already set up for display. Talon has to yell at him to get back to work.
  • Wham Line: After multiple hints are dropped, Ebon finally shouts about why Rubberband Man should do as he says.
    Ebon: When Dad passed away—!
Rubberband Man: DON'T YOU MENTION HIM!
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Rubberband Man still holds out some hope that Ebon can reform like he did.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Static thinks Rubberband Man helped Ebon get away because they're still on the same side, but it's actually out of misguided family loyalty.
