Recap / South Park S15 E2 "Funnybot"

Go To

Original air date: 5/4/2011

When Jimmy says that Germany is the least funny country at the school's comedy awards, the country retaliates by creating a robot comedian that becomes a major celebrity and puts all the other comedians out of their jobs.

"Funnybot" contains examples of:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Funnybot eventually tries to destroy mankind as "the ultimate joke".
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Funnybot shuts down, the boys haul a crate to be buried which is then covered with cement. Everybody is happy that things can return to normal as the greatest threat to mankind is gone forever: Tyler Perry.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: No comedians come to Jimmy's comedy awards (besides Tyler Perry, who won't leave). After the fiasco with the Germans and Funnybot's increasing popularity however, all of them break into the school and angrily confront Jimmy at gunpoint over indirectly damaging their careers (while making quite clear that the reason they didn't come before was because they think comedy awards are the stupidest idea ever).
  • Bilingual Bonus: Cartman speaks in (gratuitous) German without subtitles, and says some...interesting things about Kyle:
Cartman: Duerfen wir dir Kind dort ... geboten? Er ist Jude. Ein schoener saftig Jude. Er ist frisch und wunderhuebsch. Wunderhuebsch.note
Translation: Can I offer you this child? Eh? He's a Jew. A handsome soft Jew. He's freeesh. And beauuutiful. Beautiful.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: Funnybot believes killing all humans will lead to the greatest punchline of all time. Cartman admits that slaughtering everybody is kind of funny.
Funnybot: Humans make comedy, humans build robot, robot ends all life on earth, robot feels awkward.
  • Cringe Comedy: Funnybot is programmed to consider feeling awkward to be funny. It also thinks killing people is awkward.
  • The End... Or Is It?: Jimmy assures the others that there won't be any future comedy awards, but Cartman is not so confident.
  • Expy: Funnybot is basically a less hateful and violent Dalek. It's also an Expy of Nomad, the homicidal probe from the Star Trek episode "The Changeling"; it frequently quotes Nomad's dialogue and its meltdown at the end is a near-exact copy of the latter's upon being hit with a classic Captain Kirk Logic Bomb.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: In a clever bit of foreshadowing, Funnybot can be seen among the crowd as the container with Tyler Perry is being dropped into the Earth and buried.
  • Germanic Depressives: The Germans beat out the Japanese and the Yupik Eskimos of the Chukchi Peninsula to be declared the least funny people in the world at the South Park Elementary Comedy Awards, leading to the plot.
  • Humor Dissonance: Pretty clearly invoked in Funnybot's performances, which range from passably good jokes to downright nonsense, all anchored around a badly forced and cliched catchphrase. It is interpreted as the funniest thing in existence.
  • Jerkass Ball: Downplayed, but Jimmy definitely holds it. He forces the entire school to attend a comedy award show during lunch and recess, despite no one (even the faculty) wanting to go, and refuses to accept accountability when said award show caused a ton of strife, two hostage situations and the creation of the sociopathic Funnybot, and is under the delusion that it was a big success.
  • Karma Houdini: Funnybot receives no retribution for attempting to nuke humanity to extinction, and is easily forgiven by everyone at the end.
  • Logic Bomb: Kyle invokes this as the way to prevent Funnybot from destroying mankind as the ultimate joke. The boys ultimately stop it by presenting it with a comedy award. The robot doesn't understand the concept of the comedy award show, because if it accepts an award for being funny, then it would be taking itself and comedy seriously, which is not funny.
  • Mad Libs Dialogue: Some of Funnybot's more roast-like jokes are made to sound like this to emphasize his literally formulaic material.
Funnybot: I wouldn't let Adam Sandler suck my saggy tits for one-million dollars worth of Oprah's tampons.
  • Never My Fault: Jimmy continually states the comedy awards was a rousing success despite the fact pretty much no one wanted to be there and it ended up pissing Germany off which led to Funnybot's creation.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: Jimmy is the only one, besides Tyler Perry, to enjoy the comedy awards show he pulls off. Everyone else finds it incredibly dull and spend the entire thing looking bored and miserable. The Germans meanwhile found it insulting, especially when they won an award as the least funny people in the world. And then after Funnybot puts comedians out of work, even they’re pissed off because the Comedy Awards show caused the mess in the first place.
    • Token and President Obama are the only ones to enjoy Tyler Perry’s humor.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Although Jimmy is forced into rescinding the award for "Least Funny People" from the Germans, we never find out who, or even if, either of the other nominees were given it instead.
  • Shout-Out: Funnybot has the body shape and voice of a Dalek, a computer interface tool similar to R2-D2's, and the personality of Nomad, the homicidal probe from the Star Trek episode "The Changeling". He frequently quotes Nomad ("Non-sequitur!") and his meltdown at the end is a near-exact copy of the latter's freakout after being hit by a classic Captain Kirk Logic Bomb.
  • Stop Being Stereotypical: Token can't stop laughing at Tyler Perry's comedy, much to his own dismay. Barack Obama suffers from the same problem, noting that it's embarrassing but he can't help himself.
  • Super-Powered Robot Meter Maids: A robot built for the purpose of comedy reveals gatling guns to shoot crowds of people.
  • Take That!: Tyler Perry is the subject of much ridicule.
    • Comedy Award shows in general are also lampooned with a healthy dose of Biting-the-Hand Humor and Irony as Comedy Central hosted two comedy awards.
  • Tempting Fate: After Stan expresses relief that there isn't a group of pissed-off people holding the entire school hostage, a bunch of jobless comedians break in and holds the school hostage, demanding that Jimmy and the boys put a stop to Funnybot's career.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Tyler Perry is the only comedian that actually shows up for Jimmy's comedy awards. Then he starts squatting at the school in full Madea garb and routine, and nobody can get him to leave because Token is the only person who thinks he's funny and won't stop giving him money. It's worth noting that even Token seems to be aware of the annoyance, he just can't help it.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Jimmy's comedy award leads to the creation of Funnybot, who nearly destroys all biological life.
