Recap / Resident Alien S 2 E 2 The Wire

Go To

Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv are onto Harry, who is focused on saving Asta from the impending apocalypse.

Tropes:

  • Animal Jingoism: Octopus knows a lot of jokes aimed at cuttlefish.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Harry dips each bite of apple pie in oatmeal with "extra, extra, extra milk," which disturbs Sheriff Mike.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv having come to arrest Harry for Sam Hodges's murder.
  • Electrified Bathtub: Asta stands in Harry's tub holding a toaster as a suicide threat.
  • Green Rocks: The spherical remains of Harry's ship cause Max to develop chest and facial hair, build an apocalypse bunker, and allow Harry to briefly assume Asta's form.
  • Guilt-Induced Nightmare: Harry dreams of a post-apocalyptic Patience after his people have finished the Kill All Humans mission, with the D'Arcy in his nightmare informing him that Asta is already dead.
  • Hidden Wire: Sheriff Mike wears a wire to the weekly poker game that Harry attends, allowing Liv to listen in from the parking lot.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Mike remarks that the 90k he has in the bank isn't much, only to learn that Liv can't afford the $65 for a replacement car starter.
  • Loose Floorboard Hiding Spot: Mike finds the cooler of botulinum toxin under a loose floorboard in Harry's cabin.
  • Rapid Hair Growth: Max wakes up with a full beard in addition to his Carpet of Virility.
  • Reading Lips: Deputy Liv can do this near perfectly to Harry from across the room. Unfortunately, Harry is talking about alien weirdness, causing Liv (and Mike) to doubt her abilities.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Dr. Smallwood may have been a highly-competent physician in her younger years, but she is quite senile now.
  • Shapeshifting: Harry has a conversation with the police while assuming Asta's form.
  • There Will Be Toilet Paper: Sahar shaves Max's beard, leading to some nicking.
  • This Song Goes Out to TV Tropes: D'Arcy calls in to a local radio station in Patience to request "Off You" by The Breeders for Asta. However, since the D.J. is a guy she dated for five months, then stole six bottles of wine from his refrigerator upon breaking up with him, she puts on a bad Russian accent and claims to be "Sasha." Nobody is fooled.
  • Undercover as Lovers: Mike and Liv pose as a married couple in order to meet with a realtor. She takes the opportunity to paint him as a House Husband.
  • Undignified Death: Judy announces to her tour group how Ben's ancestor, Dickie Hawthorne, died. He is quick to assure Max that the story is an old and untrue rumor.
Judy: Great-great-grandson of Dickie Hawthorne, who died the day the mine collapsed, but not with his fellow miners. No, Dickie called in sick that day. His wife found him in the whorehouse and shot him in the face.
  • Would Rather Suffer: Asta declares that she would rather die than spend a year with Harry in his bunker.
