Recap / Power Rangers Ninja Storm S1E38 Storm Before The Calm Part 2

Go To

With the Abyss of Evil finally opened, the Rangers must stop Lothor's ambitions once and for all when all their past foes return for revenge.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Adaptational Wimp: This trope applies to the revived generals, even though in the original version they also suffered from Conservation of Ninjutsu, they were still tough enough opponents that the entire team had to work as a team to beat them. In this version the Red Ranger defeats them by himself, almost without trying.
  • And the Adventure Continues: "A happy ending is nothing more than a new beginning."
  • Armor-Piercing Question: As Hunter and Blake get to work freeing Cam, while ignoring Marah and Kapri.
Marah: You can't just leave us here.
    Hunter: Why shouldn't we?
  • Back for the Finale: The students from the Wind and Thunder ninja academies make a return when they are rescued by Cam and the Thunder Rangers.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Marah and Kapri wanted to be taken seriously by proving they were evil. Lothor says they are certainly evil, which means he can't trust them, so he gladly leaves them to die.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The Wind and Thunder ninja academy students help the Rangers save the day by battling Lothor's Kelzack forces.
  • Big "NO!": Lothor when he sees the Wind Rangers' combined energy attack about to hit.
  • Book Ends: The three strangers that helped Cam, Hunter, and Blake last episode return at the end of the episode so the season can end as it began, with three ninjas late for class.
  • Brick Joke: The three strangers similar to Tori, Dustin, and Shane from the previous episode return at the end of this episode as new students at the ninja academy just like Shane, Dustin, and Tori were at the start of the season.
  • Call-Back: When escaping Lothor's ship, Marah asks Cam if Dustin is still mad at her for betraying him, but Cam points it isn't the right time with the ship about to explode.
  • Climactic Battle Resurrection: Lothor's resurrected army versus the Rangers and the rescued Wind Academy students.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Subverted. Despite them being family, Lothor has no problem abandoning Cam, Marah, and Kapri on a self-destructing ship. As he says, one is a hated enemy and the other two are only his nieces by marriage.
  • The Fellowship Has Ended: Blake intends to pursue a motocross career and hit the racing circuit, while Hunter gets a job as head teacher at the Thunder Ninja Academy. It looks like Shane and Dustin will also be leaving to professionally pursue boarding and freestyle, respectively, but they and Tori instead opt to take teaching jobs and stay at the Wind Ninja Academy with Cam and Sensei.
  • Foreshadowing: Lothor is sent plunging into the Abyss of Evil, along with the Samurai Amulet containing all the Rangers' powers. Also one of the three teens that look like Shane, Tori and Dustin, happens to be the identical twin brother of the Red Ranger from next season.
  • From Bad to Worse: The Storm Megazord is destroyed during the course of the Zord fight. The three Wind Rangers then get a front row seat for the Abyss of Evil overflowing.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Marah and Kapri pull one after Cam saves them from Lothor's self-destructing base.
  • Here We Go Again!: Cam has this attitude when he sees the Similar Squad show up for ninja training.
  • Insult Backfire:
Lothor: How does it feel to fail, Rangers?
    Shane: You should know!
  • It's All My Fault: Shane blames himself for the situation spiraling out of control, feeling it could have been avoided had he done a better job leading the fight against Lothor.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When Lothor starts attacking in a giant robot, he exclaims, "This is the most fun I've had all season!"
  • Little "No": Shane, as the Abyss of Evil overflows.
  • Love Redeems: They were never that evil to start with, but Marah and Kapri redeem because a relative showed them compassion.
  • Near-Villain Victory: The Abyss of Evil overflows, and Lothor completely dominates the entire team and steals their powers. He only loses because the Wind Rangers manage to create an energy blast using their ninja training.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Lothor blasting Sensei in the previous episode ended up restoring him to his human form.
  • Not Quite Dead: Hunter and Blake reveal they ejected before the Thunder Megazord blew up.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Marah and Kapri when they realize that Lothor doesn't need them anymore.
    • The participants in the US Action Games when Lothor opens the Abyss of Evil.
    • Cam when he's overpowered by Lothor and is at the latter's mercy.
    • Lothor when the Wind Rangers combine their powers to send him into the Abyss of Evil for good.
  • The Reveal: Sensei has always had the missing piece of the Scroll of Destiny, and it's how he knew Shane, Tori, and Dustin were destined to become Power Rangers.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Lothor's view of leaving Marah and Kapri to die on the ship, saying they were a little too eager when acting like they were betraying him and helping bring about the generals' demises. The nieces pointing out Lothor told them to behave that way as part of his plan doesn't get them anywhere.
  • Save the Villain: Cam agrees to save Marah and Kapri. They've helped make his and the other Rangers' lives miserable for the last season, but they're still part of his extended family.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Lothor ends up sealed in the Abyss of Evil.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: The Ranger powers are sealed up along with Lothor.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: During the final confrontation.
Lothor: I have your Ranger powers! You are at my mercy once and for all!
Shane: We won't let you win.
Lothor: What can you do to me without your powers?
Shane: We might not be Power Rangers, but we still got power!
  • Similar Squad: Three new ninja students act suspiciously like the Wind Rangers did.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Marah explains to Cam how best to short-circuit the ship's systems and release the trapped ninjas. Cam is impressed that she's smarter than she's given credit for.
  • So Proud of You: Sensei when saying the Rangers have graduated and commending them for their service.
  • Storming the Castle: Hunter and Blake infiltrate Lothor's ship in order to save Cam and all the ninja academy students.
  • Wham Shot: Sensei having been restored to his true form.
  • The Worf Effect: Cam is the only Ranger to not morph. And he never gets a chance after Lothor steals his powers.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Dustin remarks the original trio never would've gotten their powers if not for being late the day Lothor attacked, Sensei shows them the fragment of the Scroll of Destiny to prove they were always meant to become Rangers. He says he never doubted the prophecy would come to pass and fully expected the three to prove themselves worthy without being told of their destiny beforehand.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Cam when Marah and Kapri show up at the school to become students.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Lothor abandons Cam, Marah and Kapri on his ship before he sets it to self-destruct.
