Recap / Martha Speaks S 1 E 27 Escape From Flea Island

Go To

On a rainy day, Martha, Carolina, T.D., and Truman are canoeing to Flea Island. When they get near the shore, however, their canoe gets wrecked on a rock, so they have to wade to shore and shelter under a shelter. The humans are despairing, especially since Carolina is the only one with a cell phone and it got damaged by the water, but Martha is hopeful that they'll be rescued. However, the boys then realise that nobody knows they're there, and blame Carolina, since the trip was her idea, and she made them keep it secret. Martha asks Carolina why she took them there, so she explains, but tells the boys and Martha to keep it secret lest they ruin the "mission".

We flash back to last Friday at school, when it all started, and she was glad it was Friday. However, Tiffany approaches her and explains that for the science project, everyone must bring plants. Carolina explains that she was originally just going to bring leaves from her yard, until Tiffany mentioned that she would be bringing a plant her father brought back from France.

She then explains that Tiffany is very competitive, so Carolina felt she had to outdo her, so she chose to lead a "scientific expedition", and she chose Flea Island because it was the most "exotic" place she could think of that was still nearby. She then explains that she brought Martha due to her keen sense of smell and Truman due to his knowledge of botany. T.D. asks why he was chosen, and Carolina explains that he was chosen to paddle the canoe. Truman asks what to do, and Carolina appoints herself as the leader. T.D. disagrees, saying that she was the one who put them into the situation, and the two argue.

Martha tells them off for not cooperating, then Truman decides that they should go foraging. Carolina wants to lead the way, prompting another argument between her and T.D., then Martha runs into the woods and the others follow. They walk through the woods, and when Truman steps on a twig, they think it's something dangerous and run back to the beach in fear.

After a bit of back-and-forth, Truman expresses fear that they'll never escape, but T.D. doesn't mind that idea, and suggests that they start their own civilisation. After he imagines meeting some pirates, Truman suggests they "find a consensus" on what to do. They can't reach one, however, until Martha finds the canoe and they pull it to shore. Martha and the boys want to leave, but Carolina insists on staying, believing the sun to be "setting the wrong way".

Martha hears a phone, so they run off to find a pizzeria. Then, they realise that they're not on Flea Island; they're on the far side of the lake... but they still don't know how to get home. T.D., however, gets the idea to order pizza for delivery and have the delivery guy take them home in the process. Carolina then realises she forgot about her science project and must bring three plants, but T.D. solves it by ordering a pizza with pineapple, spinach, and broccoli.

This episode provides examples of

  • Big "SHUT UP!": Martha yells, "Quiet!" to get Carolina and T.D. to stop arguing.
  • Calling Your Nausea: Truman at one point mentions, "I'm gonna be sick again!".
  • Cloud Cuckoolanguage: Discussed when T.D. suggests that he, Carolina, Truman, and Martha make up their own language while making their own civilisation.
  • Continuity Nod: Truman apparently threw up on Martha in the boat, which references his seasickness, which was first brought up in "Truman and the Deep, Blue Sea".
  • Department of Redundancy Department: When the boys and Martha are listing the many things that are going wrong, Martha lists that she's hungry three times.
  • Don't Go in the Woods: Played with. The kids and Martha thought the woods were dangerous, but what they heard was just Truman stepping on a twig.
  • Dramatic Irony: The characters never find out that it was only Truman stepping on a twig that frightened them.
  • Dressed to Plunder: The pirates in T.D.'s fantasy wear black boots and loose shirts, and one wears a big black hat, a long coat, and an eyepatch, while the other wears a handkerchief on his head, striped pants, and earrings.
  • Evil Laugh: In the flashback, Carolina laughs evilly when finding a way to outdo Tiffany.
  • Fantasy Sequence: T.D. imagines him and the others living their lives on Flea Island.
  • Flashback:
    • When Truman says, "You were the one who said..." we cut back to Carolina saying it.
    • When Carolina is explaining that she took Martha and the boys to Flea Island for a science project, we get a flashback to the previous Friday.
  • Happy Dance: Carolina is seen dancing while expressing her gratitude that it's Friday, however, it's unknown if she actually did dance, she she admits herself to taking poetic license with her "story".
  • Jolly Roger: The pirates in T.D.'s imagination have a skull and crossbones flag.
  • Kids Hate Vegetables: The kids are none too pleased at the idea of a pizza with spinach and broccoli (in addition to pineapple).
  • Mirthless Laughter: Carolina chuckles in embarrassment after she realises she's not actually drowning.
  • Musical World Hypotheses: Carolina's song she sings in the flashback is all but explicitly all in her imagination, since she says, "It's my story; I'll tell it the way I want", implying that she's making the "song" part up.
  • Not Where They Thought: Martha, Carolina, T.D., and Truman thought they washed up on Flea Island, but they actually washed up on the far side of the lake.
  • Only One Who Likes Spam: Martha (being both a Big Eater and a dog) is the only one who is keen on eating the pizza with pineapple, spinach, and broccoli.
  • Pineapple Ruins Pizza: Truman and Carolina shout, "Eww!" at the idea of a pizza with pineapple (in addition to spinach and broccoli).
  • Speak in Unison: When T.D. orders the pizza with pineapple, spinach, and broccoli, Truman and Carolina shout, "Eww!" at once.
  • Stop Drowning and Stand Up: Carolina initially thinks she's drowning when she lands in the water, but then one of the boys tells her to stand up, which she does, and the water turns out to be very shallow.
  • Technicolor Science: When Carolina is seen doing chemistry, all the serums look extremely brightly-coloured.
  • Tempting Fate: Carolina had doubted that the rain would be any more than a drizzle, only for a torrential downpour to happen.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Carolina claims that she'd been singing about how grateful she was for it to be Friday, however, when Truman questions this, she says that it's her story and she'll tell it how she wants, which could indicate that she simply made that detail up.
