Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 16 E 05 Celebrity Booze

Go To

Dennis, Mac, and Charlie try to recruit Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston into their celebrity booze scheme. Frank and Dee take a ride on Frank's private jet.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Several towards Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul.
    • Their dynamic in this episode is a role reversal of Walt and Jesse's dynamic from Breaking Bad.
    • The two are business partners in peddling an addictive substance (this time alcohol instead of meth).
    • During the limo drive, Cranston talks about being a gambling addict. This is potentially both a nod to Walter White pretending to be one as part of a plan to pay his brother-in-law's medical bills with drug money, as well Jesse Pinkman's addiction to various substances.
    • After delivering his monologue, the Gang tell Bryan he'd make a good dramatic actor and should transition from comedy.
  • Adam Westing: Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston play fictional versions of themselves.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: When Dennis is discussing the Gang's plan to recruit Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston for their celebrity booze, he doesn't mention Breaking Bad.
Dennis: Now, have you ever heard of a little show called... Malcolm in the Middle?
  • Character as Himself: Gritty, the mascot for the Philadelphia Flyers.
  • Continuity Nod: While posing as a limo driver, Charlie says that he has not driven a car in a long time, the last time he did so on-screen being over tens years ago.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Everyone spends about thirty seconds angrily telling Dee to shut up over the phone.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The Gang's antics are ultimately what makes Aaron not want to do business with them.
  • I Am Not Spock: The Gang constantly call Aaron Paul "Malcolm" due to confusing him with Frankie Muniz.
  • Inherently Funny Words: The Gang's prospective blended drink, composed of a Jägermeister, a schnapps, and the cinnamon liqueur used in Goldschlager is referred to as "Schlagerschnappstermeister".
  • Nice Character, Mean Actor: While Jesse Pinkman is considered one of the nicest characters in Breaking Bad, Aaron Paul is portrayed as a manipulative abuser who wants to control every aspect of Bryan Cranston's life, paralleling Dennis' relationship with Mac.
  • Out of Focus: Frank and Dee spend most of the episode circling Philly on a plane.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: It turns out that no one in the Gang has seen or heard of Breaking Bad, as it is never mentioned by anyone, they believe Aaron Paul was also in Malcolm in the Middle, and they are surprised when Bryan Cranston shows off his dramatic acting chops.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Subverted. Bryan appears to give one to the abusive Aaron, but Bryan reveals he's just acting and didn't mean any of it.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Bryan and Aaron want nothing to do with the Gang or their scheme.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When Frank is circling Philly to get tax off looking like he's going to Aruba, Dee asks why doesn't he just fly to Aruba.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Just like the rest of the Gang, an unnamed security guard who talks to Charlie also mistakenly believes Aaron Paul was Malcolm.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Though Aaron's rule against handshakes certainly didn't help, Dennis' initial plan was doomed from the start due to assuming the meet & greet would give him enough time to pitch a product.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Happens several times when Charlie begins vomiting up nickels.
