Homestar Runner opens his own doughnut stand, sparking a fierce marketing war between himself and Bubs.

Tropes

  • Blatant Lies: Bubs claims that his doughnuts fight cavities and clean teeth, then hastily adds "The American Dental Association does not approve the preceding statements."
  • Brick Joke: Early on, it's established Homestar bought "questionable medical coverage" from Bubs. At the end of the cartoon, Homestar asks Bubs if his insurance will cover him getting burned by his own fryer oil.
  • Burning with Anger: Bubs' face is red and furious, and smoke is emitting from his head, when he confronts Homestar about opening a doughnut stand right across from the concession stand.
  • Clipboard of Authority: Strong Bad is seen carrying a clipboard when posing as a health inspector.
  • Comically Missing the Point: In spite of Bubs Burning with Anger, Homestar doesn't catch on that he's is upset until the end of the conversation, taking all Bubs' sarcasm and veiled threats completely literally.
  • Coca-Pepsi, Inc.: Homestar suggests that he and Bubs could form a conglomerate, "like KFC-Taco Bell-Radisson-Texas Instruments-NASA!" (KFC and Taco Bell actually are owned by the same company, but the others aren't even in the same industry.)
  • Dueling Products: invoked In-Universe, with Homestar and Bubs' doughnut stands.
  • Exact Words: Bubs sells his doughnuts shipped from a third-world country named Homemádenote , so he could legally print "From Homemádenote " on the box.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: You can briefly read a snippet of the front page article from the newspaper Homestar holds up during the "marketing bombardment" sequence.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Homestar is pushed out of frame when Strong Bad tips over his stand and causes the hot fryer oil to spill everywhere. We're left to imagine how hideously (or hilariously) burned Homestar ends up.
  • Hurricane of Euphemisms: Bubs' stand only offers one flavor of doughnuts (plain), but he has over 1000 different terms for it like "ordinary" and "run-of-the-mill".
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Homestar insists that he's wanted to sell doughnuts since he was a kid—and that he got the idea from a dream he had just last night.
  • Insignificant Anniversary: Marzipan wonders if the donuts Homestar is making are to celebrate "the 16th anniversary of our 17th break-up."
  • I Taste Delicious: After getting his face doused in fryer oil, Homestar describes it as "deliciously fried".
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Homestar and Bubs talk about the "3:09 PM doughnut rush", and at three minutes and nine seconds into the cartoon the King of Town is about to announce his decision when he's interrupted by Strong Bad the "health inspector".
  • Literal-Minded: When Bubs complains about Homestar opening a doughnut stand "right across the street" from the concession stand, Homestar points out that there isn't really a street, since both Bubs' Concession Stand and Homestar's doughnut stand are in the middle of The Field.
  • Missing Steps Plan: Homestar's secret recipe for doughnuts is really just a piece of toilet paper with "dog-nut" written on it.
  • New Jobs As The Plot Demands: Homestar wonders why Bubs is so upset about him opening a doughnut stand across the way from the concession stand, since last he heard Bubs was into selling "questionable medical coverage".
Bubs: That was two hours ago. Now I'm in the doughnut bidness!
  • Ow, My Body Part!: Homestar yells "Ah! My face! My deliciously fried face!" after Strong Bad knocks over his doughnut stand.
  • Real Dreams are Weirder: Homestar says his idea to open a doughnut stand came to him in a dream... one where he was "a French long-jump champion with eight wooden legs". Even stranger is that the Imagine Spot shown has Homestar as a Mexican high-jump champion with one leg.
Marzipan: (deadpan) And...that made you want to start a doughnut shop?
  • Shout-Out: Homestar hums the Inspector Gadget theme as he swabs his grease trap for Health Inspector Strong Bad.
  • Smoke Out: The King of Town does a Smoke In at the start of the 3:09 PM doughnut rush, and a Smoke Out when "health inspector" Strong Bad shows up.
  • Standard Snippet: Bubs hums "Mysterioso Pizzicato" while sneaking away at the end of the cartoon.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike:
    • Homestar's talk about getting ready for the "3:09 PM doughnut rush" seems like nonsense, but then Bubs mentions having to get ready for it too. Then at 3:09 PM exactly, the King of Town shows up, who's enough of a Big Eater to be a lunch rush by himself.
    • After setting up his doughnut stand, Homestar wonders "how many million doughnuts I'll sell on my first day... Three? Four? Eight?" When the King of Town shows up, he says he needs to order doughnuts "in the 3 to 8 million range" to maintain his caloric intake.
    • Homestar suggests forming a conglomerate, "like KFC-Taco Bell-Radisson-Texas Instruments-NASA!" When the KOT arrives, he mentions "According to the data I got back from Taco Bell-NASA..."
