Recap / Friends S 5 E 9 The One With Ross's Sandwich

Go To

With Chandler and Monica still keeping their relationship a secret, Joey has to cover for them, which puts him in some compromising positions. Ross is upset that someone stole his lunch at work. Rachel takes night classes with Phoebe, who is annoyed that she's not taking them seriously.

Tropes:

  • Answer Cut: After Phoebe asks who she can take to her literature class now, Rachel says, "I know someone." Cut to Monica at the class acting like a Teacher's Pet.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After spending the entire episode covering for Monica and Chandler and being framed as a pervert, Joey finally retaliates by framing Monica as the sex addict and linking her to the items that were found eg. underwear, video camera, her naked picture, etc.
  • Fall Guy: Joey has to cover up for any evidence of Monica and Chandler's trysts by admitting that he was to blame.
  • Filching Food for Fun: Ross has his delicious turkey sandwich stolen at work despite it having a note with his name. He finds out that it was his boss who took it for no particular reason, and what's more, he couldn't even finish it and threw most of it into trash.
  • Home Porn Movie: Chandler and Monica are trying to make one when Joey brings home his date. The date thinks the set-up is for them and is horrified that he apparently wanted to tape them having sex on their first date.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Joey at the end, while eating a bucket of fried chicken.
Joey: I think we've all learned a lesson about who's disgusting and who is not. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to my bucket. I'm only eating the skins, so the chicken's up for grabs.
  • Indy Ploy: Unwilling to either continue being a fall guy or reveal the big secret, Joey spins an elaborate yarn about previously sleeping with Monica and her becoming obsessed with him.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Thanks to Phoebe's note, everyone at the museum becomes scared of Ross and willing to do anything to accommodate him. Ross enjoys this and expresses certainty that he could get anything he wanted so long as he acts tough.
Ross: Hey, Tribbiani, give me that coffee. Now!
[Without even stopping drinking his coffee, Joey effortlessly pushes Ross over the couch with one hand]
  • Karma Houdini: Donald knowingly steals someone else's lunch and acts towards that person (Ross) like it was a completely reasonable thing to do. He faces no consequences.
    • Besides a few minutes of social embarrassment, Rachel gets no comeuppance for making Phoebe's English class a living hell.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: In covering for Chandler and Monica's relationship, Joey has been mistaken for a complete pervert, been accused of peeping and taking covert photos, and shaved his legs.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Rachel kept goofing off in the class and even swiped some of Phoebe's ideas about symbolism. Phoebe ultimately responds by deliberately misleading Rachel about the latest assignment.
Phoebe: [smirking] I'm sorry. It was just so funny when you started comparing Jane Eyre to RoboCop.
    • After urging Joey to keep taking the fall for any embarrassing incidents, Monica has to go along with the cover story that he comes up with.
  • Lost Food Grievance: Ross has his sandwich stolen at work. Phoebe tries to help by sending threatening notes with his lunch, making it seem like he has an anger management problem. His rant when he finds out who took the sandwich doesn't help.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Ross is displeased by the idea of Joey sleeping with Monica and gets his rage medication.
  • Nerds Love Tough Schoolwork: Monica convinces the teacher to give a test during the next class, much to the dismay of the other students. She then makes it worse by suggesting the test include essay questions.
  • Noodle Incident: Phoebe says she once stabbed a cop. When chastised for this, she insists the cop stabbed her first.
  • Rage Breaking Point: The loss of Ross's sandwich and the discovery about what happened to it tip Ross over the edge after the events of the last few episodes, which include his second divorce and his eviction.
  • Running Gag: "I'm Joey. I'm disgusting..."
  • Satiating Sandwich: The sandwich Monica made for Ross from Thanksgiving leftovers. The secret is an extra slice of bread in the middle soaked with gravy (Ross calls it "the Moistmaker").
  • The Scream: "You-you-you-you threw my sandwich away! My sandwich? MY SANDWICH?!?!"
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: As Joey spins his Indy Ploy about Monica being obsessed with him and trying to entice him, Phoebe remarks that's how he ended up with a naked photo of Monica. Joey observes that makes sense and runs with it.
  • Take Our Word for It: Whatever Phoebe wrote on the note for Ross' sandwich. The audience doesn't get to see what it says but Monica declares Phoebe a "badass" for it but Ross gets in trouble at work because of how threatening it is.
  • That Makes Me Feel Angry: At Central Perk, an out of it Ross comments about his rage. Justified because he was given medication to calm him down.
  • Uncool Undies: After taking credit for the underwear left in Monica's couch, Joey takes a moment to mock Chandler because the underpants were tighty-whities.
    Joey: What, are you 8?
