Recap / Dragons Riders Of Berk S 2 E 3 The Night And The Fury

Go To

Astrid has a new training mission: survive one walk around Dragon Island, with no camping gear OR dragons. The other riders have to tough it out while Tuffnut stays in the cave with the dragons. Hiccup finds out, however, that the riders and wild dragons aren't alone on the island; Dagur the Deranged is there as well, determined to hunt down Toothless.

This episode provides examples of

  • The Ace: Hiccup and Astrid are the only riders that navigate the path with ease.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": All the riders about "dragon hunting" when encountering Dagur, except for Astrid.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Dagur while talking about the dragons he's killed picks up a leg of meat while talking about a Gronckle. As Hiccup asks, Dagur assures him it's a wild yak leg.
  • Bear Hug: Dagur delivers one to Hiccup upon seeing that he is "alive" from the Night Fury attacking him.
  • Call-Forward: Dagur’ as main weapon of choice in this episode is a crossbow is likely an allusion to Grimmel the Grisly in the third film.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Hiccup in the fight with Dagur. He shows just what his "ornate shield" can do.
  • Epic Fail:
    • Ruffnut trying to run from a Monstrous Nightmare.
    • Snotlout vs. Terrible Terrors.
  • Exactly What I Aimed At: Hiccup aims his grappling hook at a tree. Dagur gloats that Hiccup missed, only to find a tree branch coming down on him.
  • Foreshadowing: Dagur briefly refers to "my sister."
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy: Tuffnut falls asleep while watching the dragons after they pretend to take a nap.
  • Internal Reveal: This episode sees Dagur learn that Berk really does in fact have trained dragons.
  • Living MacGuffin: The "Night Fury" aka Toothless for Dagur since the "dragon attack" on Berk.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Toothless leaving the cave to check on Hiccup leads to Dagur hunting the dragon and Hiccup having to blow his cover to save Toothless.
  • Noodle Incident: Astrid's previous training exercise was "Hand to Claw Combat". Fishlegs has bandages from it.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Dagur on seeing Hiccup and Toothless leaving immediately incapacitates Toothless with several bolas and tries to take down Hiccup with a plethora of knives.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Dagur has none where Hiccup is concerned.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Hiccup when he encounters Dagur instead of Snotlout.
    • Tuffnut waking up and finding the dragons gone.
    • Dagur when Hiccup brings a tree branch down on him, frees Toothless, and proceeds to chase him back to his ship.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Dagur says that "no one is killing Hiccup; except for me."
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Hiccup, especially now that he's perfected his shield.
  • Red Shirt: Dagur has killed at least a wild Monstrous Nightmare and Gronckle.
  • Running Gag: Hiccup despite claiming he came alone encounters his friends.
  • Shout-Out: Hiccup throws his shield Captain America-style.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Toothless with a fireball reminds Tuffnut why the "Boss Man" really has no power in the cave.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Yes, Hiccup is on Dragon Island because he's hunting dragons. His friends are there for the same reason.
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: Hiccup's shield. It doubles as a crossbow and a grappling hook, which puts Dagur on the ropes.
  • Terms of Endangerment: Dagur refers to Hiccup as his "brother".
  • Villainous Crush: Dagur on Hiccup, to the point where he acts like a Woman Scorned when Hiccup saves Toothless from him.
  • Wham Line:
    • Dagur admits that he got rid of his father while talking about how he and Hiccup aren't so different. Hiccup is appropriately horrified.
    • For Dagur, coming from Hiccup "I'm taking the whole thing."
  • Wham Shot:
    • Dagur tackling Hiccup when the latter spots his campfire.
    • The Annoying Arrows that reveal Dagur brought his entire armada to hunt down the dragons.
  • Worthy Opponent: Dagur after Hiccup brings down a tree branch on him says, "I've got to get me one of those ornate shields!"
