Recap / Disenchantment - S3 E9: "The Madness of King Zog"

Go To

As a mysterious cloud of green smoke moves toward Dreamland and Zøg becomes more unstable than ever, Bean finds a unique way to communicate with him.

Tropes:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Bean states she'll only do the job of tending to her dad if Odval and the council crawl and beg for her. Which they do.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: When stocking up on supplies for the oncoming siege, Rulo and the elves bring suicide gumballs alongside their regular ones as a precaution for this kind of scenario.
  • Berserk Board Barricade: The people of Dreamland can be seen boarding up their homes and stores this way in preparation of a possible attack.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Zøg’s Sanity Slippage worsens to the point of being taken away from his kingdom. However, Bean is ready to take over the royal duties and prepares for the incoming threat.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: While recalling her father's instructions, Bean imitates him.
  • Continuity Nod: This episode start at the end of the last one, with Bean even commenting to Sorcerio that they meet one of his colleagues.
  • Demonic Dummy: Zøg buys a sarcastic ventriloquist dummy from a store specializing in haunted dolls. Whether "Freckles" actually is possessed is left ambiguous.
  • Empty Shell: Zøg’s Sanity Slippage reaches the point he can’t even talk without a dummy. Funny enough, he still cries after telling Bean to rule the kingdom in his place, so he may not be completely lost.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Odval may be an Evil Chancellor who usurps more power than his position allows him, who is violently misogynistic, who has attempted to kill Zøg and Bean and who is totally and voluntarily responsible for the degradation of the king’s mental health. But even he seems to be genuinely sorry about what the servants in charge of feeding Zøg have to go through, and he gives them advice to try to make things go less badly.
  • Exact Words: Freckles assures Odval he won't hit him a second time. Odval leans in closer, closer... and Freckles, true to his word, does not hit Odval. He bites him.
  • Facepalm: Odval does so while Luci "introduces" Bean with a trumpet solo.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Signs in the creepy puppet store include one saying "replace your children", "terrify your neighbours" and "need a friend? This won't help". There's also a puppet that looks like Bender, and a stuffed Trog.
  • From Bad to Worse: Not just Zog's increasingly poor mental state, but the episode ends with him being handed over to the care of Chazzzzz.
  • Human Pincushion: Turns out Turbish didn't escape Bentwood unscathed, being filled entirely with arrows. Since it's Turbish, no-one cares.
  • I'll Never Tell You What I'm Telling You!: Turbish taunts Zog that the only way to get to him at the drawbridge mechanism is a secret passage just to Zog's left.
  • Karmic Butt-Monkey: Considering that Odval is voluntarily responsible for the state where the king is, to see him being beaten several times by the puppet that Zog uses in his madness is a fine example of karmic retribution.
  • Like a Son to Me: Dagmar says Freckles is like the son she never had.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: Before leaving, Oona tells Derek she loves him, but then tells him not to follow her. Derek comments that this is a confusingly mixed message.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The owner of the puppet store is blatantly Dagmar, not even trying to hide her voice, but Zøg is too far gone to notice, and Bean's distracted.
  • Passing the Torch: Zøg is confident enough that Bean will take care of Dreamland on her own, so he gives her the responsibility of it.
  • Puppet King: Bean begins to seriously consider this, even taking steps to find out if Freckles is controlling Zog. While the puppet is hinted to alive in some way, it isn't controlling Zog beyond acting as a mouthpiece for him.
  • Reluctant Ruler: Bean is feeling the pressure of being in charge and is reluctant to accept that she's essentially the one running the kingdom now.
  • Shout-Out: The owner of the puppet store tries selling an eyeless frog puppet that is basically Kermit without his eyes and collar. There's also a mechanical puppet of Bender in the same store.
  • Ventriloquism: While Zøg loses his ability to speak on his own, he talks through a dummy. It helps him a lot (or so it seems...)
  • You Are in Command Now: With Oona and Derek gone to sea and Zog committed to an asylum, Bean is made queen of Dreamland.
