"2-Wheeled Terror!"

Produced 2003, aired in U.S. on 11/5/04

Production order: 13 (1-13)

Biker Johnny 13 and his girlfriend Kitty try to escape the Ghost Zone through the Fenton Portal. Unfortunately, it closes on Kitty when she's halfway through, trapping her in a limbo between Earth and the Ghost Zone. Since she can't maintain her form on Earth, Johnny has to find a human host for her. Who's the lucky girl? Jazz, forcing Danny to protect his sister without revealing her new boyfriend is a ghost.

This episode provides examples of:

  • 13 Is Unlucky: Johnny 13 got his name because of his shadow causing bad luck for everything it touches and everyone it comes across.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Bad boy on a motorcycle? Jazz can't resist (although being infected partially by his girlfriend's energy would do that...).
  • Anti-Villain: All Johnny wants (in this episode, at least) is to save his girlfriend, and all Kitty wants is to be free. The problem is that, to make that happen, they're willing to hurt an innocent girl and anyone who tries to stop them.
  • Artifact of Doom: Kitty's scarf, jacket, and ring are infused with her essence, allowing her to possess anyone who wears all three.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Danny's protective instincts towards Jazz are front and center this episode. Jazz also reminds us she won't let anyone lay a hand on her brother.
  • Cutting the Knot: Johnny spends several days trying to sweet-talk Jazz into wearing his gifts. When Danny interferes one too many times, he finally decides to just "do this the hard way" and force her to wear them.
  • False Reassurance: After the climactic battle, Danny's parents get his hint he got into a fight with Johnny (and won); he just doesn't mention the ghost powers.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Kitty and Johnny try to invoke this by using Kitty's stuff for her to steal Jazz's body; defied by Danny, who manages to stop Johnny.
  • I Resemble That Remark!:
Girl Tucker Just Asked Out: No thanks, techno geek.
Tucker: I am not a techno geek! (throws his gadgets on the ground in frustration, then screams in horror at what he did) AAAH! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!
  • Irony: It's safe to say most of the conflict wouldn't have happened if Danny knew Jazz knew his secret and that he could be more open with her.
  • The Jinx: Due to Tucker accidentally walking under a ladder prior to Johnny's shadow causing a campaign of bad luck, everyone believed he was the cause, earning him the temporary nickname "Bad Luck Tuck."
  • Living Shadow: Johnny has a sapient shadow that spreads bad luck and that he can send on errands or tasks like a mon.
  • The Makeover: Sam does this to Tucker. Interestingly, it plays off much like a Gender Flip of a typical makeover episode, complete with the scene of Tucker washing off the Goth makeup.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits:
Danny: Better luck next time! But next time... (sucks Johnny into the thermos) stay away from my sister!
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Danny finds it very unpleasant to accept how much he's acting like his parents.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: It takes Jazz's family little time to realize she's not acting much like herself. The way she acts when she puts on Kitty's scarf and jacket seems to imply that being exposed to Kitty's energy is affecting her personality. (Once Johnny makes her wear them both plus the ring, she blanks out like a zombie.)
  • The Power of Love: Jazz snaps back to her old self when she sees Johnny threaten Danny.
Jazz: Hey! Hands off the little brother!
  • Pun-Based Title: Yes, 13 is both the title and number of the episode (although it was the fourteenth to air in November because a later episode was a Halloween Episode, which was aired Out of Order in time for the holiday).
  • Rescue Romance: Jazz almost immediately falls for Johnny after he "saves" her from being hit by a runaway rollercoaster.
  • Reverse Psychology: Tucker eventually realizes that Sam pressuring him to go Goth was just her way of getting him to realize he should just be himself. It works.
  • Ring of Power: Whether by coincidence or because it contains more of her energy than her other accessories, Kitty's ring, the last item Johnny gives Jazz, is treated as the MacGuffin of the episode. Johnny's matching ring also allows him to communicate with her.
  • Rule of Three: Johnny has to get a girl to wear three items of Kitty's to allow Kitty to possess her.
  • Scary Stinging Swarm: Tucker tries to convince others he is not bad luck, only to accidentally toss his spoon into a wasp's hive (courtesy of Johnny's shadow), causing himself and nearly all his fellow classmates to be stung.
Tucker: Suddenly, "Techno Geek" sounds like a term of endearment.
  • Shout-Out: In the cold opener after he gets separated from Kitty, Johnny does the bike slide from AKIRA.
  • So Proud of You: Danny's parents are thrilled their son has taken to spying on his sister and her creepy new boyfriend and very proud of him when they think he beat him up. Danny's not exactly comfortable with this.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: While Danny has his hands full with Jazz and Johnny, Sam tries to help Tucker through his identity crisis by turning him into a Goth.
  • Weakened by the Light: Johnny's shadow.
  • Won't Take "Yes" for an Answer: Happens when Tucker tries asking a girl out.
    Girl: Okay.
Tucker: All right, but I'll have you know, I'm persistent... wait, did you say okay?
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Kitty's fate is left unclear, since Johnny 13 is captured in the Fenton thermos and fails to transform Jazz into Kitty's host. However, by "Lucky in Love", Kitty appears to be fine in her old body.
