Five socially disparate teens, Hal, Pam, Kara, Zee, and Garth, find they have more in common than they thought after spending a Saturday in detention.

Tropes:

  • The Breakfast Plot: Lampshaded with Mr. Chapin saying he was inspired to have a Saturday detention by the film.
  • Brick Joke: While searching for her plant, Hal asks Pamela how she learned to use her vines like ropes and she says her father taught her. He then asks her if her dad was a cowboy, to which she sarcastically replies yes. Later when she’s telling the rest of the group the name of her plant which was named after her father, Hal exclaims “The cowboy!”.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Kara gets in trouble so often that she doesn't remember what she did that landed her in Saturday detention.
  • The Caper: The ragtag group of delinquents works together to get Pamela’s plant back from Principal Chapin’s office.
Hal: You know what I’m really in the mood for? A good old fashioned plant heist!
  • Detention Episode: Of course, in honor of the source material.
  • F--: It's not so much that Hal got an F, but he somehow got an F in gym class.
  • Food Fight: The reason Kara got detention is because she started a food fight…well, one of the reasons at least.
  • Freudian Slip: When Garth hands in the group’s essays that he wrote by himself, he nearly blows their cover.
Garth: Phew! I just finished the last essay - Er, finished collecting the last essay…from everyone…who each wrote one.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: Zee is in detention for getting distracted by her phone during class. She gets distracted by her phone as she's explaining this.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Hal does a trick shot with a golf ball, able to hit it from the janitor's closet window down the hall and knocks open the hamster cage, who escapes and distracts the school security guard from trying to get in.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: Mr. Chapin views Hal as a Dumb Jock, but he's huge fan of Green Lantern (Hal's alter-ego).
  • Misaimed Fandom: In-Universe, Mr. Chapin thinks The Breakfast Club is about a heroic principal trying to stop the evil delinquents.
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: After Mr. Chapin lists the stereotypes the detained students represent, Garth thinks that Chapin called Hal a nerd.
  • Pet the Dog: While she was sneaking her plant out of the principal’s office, Pam used her powers to destroy Chapin’s laptop with the report cards for the whole school on it, ensuring that no one else would find out that Hal got an F in gym class.
  • Ship Tease: Hal & Pam are shown to have a bit of a soft spot for each other in this episode.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: After Pam pulls Hal through the overhead window with her vines, Hal assumes her father was a cowboy. Pam just agrees with him.
  • Take That!: Kara groans how she wishes that "old people" would stop shoving '80s stuff down kids' throats.
Kara: Aahh! I hate the '80s!
  • Tongue-Out Insult: Pam does this to Office Montoya after she yells at her at the end of the episode.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The plant Pam is after is the only reminder of her father. It only blooms once in 10 years, and the episode takes place when it would next bloom.
  • The Un-Reveal: We never learn why Garth is in detention. He's interrupted both times he tries to explain, as no one else is interested.
  • We Need a Distraction: Hal distracts Mr. Chapin as Green Lantern while Pam gets her plant back from his desk. Zee and Kara similarly distract Officer Montoya into a closet so she's away from the principal's office.
  • "YEAH!" Shot: Pam does one at the end, which is interrupted by Officer Montoya.
Montoya: Hey, Isley! Quit standing there with your fist raised in triumph and go home!
