Recap / Brooklyn Nine Nine S 2 E 07 Lockdown

Go To

"Lockdown" is the seventh episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's second season.

It's Thanksgiving at the Nine Nine and Holt and Terry have to go to a charity event so Jake is left in charge of the precinct for the day while all the other detectives take time off. At least that was the plan until Boyle accidentally knocks a parcel off the mail trolley and releases a mysterious white powder into the squad room. The precinct is put into lockdown with the two senior officers gone and everyone is looking to Jake for answers.

The only upside of the situation is that Hitchcock accidentally locked himself out on the precinct's balcony.

Tropes present in this episode:

  • Artistic License – Medicine: Jake was somehow allowed to donate five pints of blood after forgetting to tell the precinct about a blood drive.
  • Bad Boss: Terry finally finds something to bond over with Zeke when the latter mistakes Holt for one, which he also has to deal with at work.
  • Blatant Lies: Lampshaded when Gina declares "I'm 23, I'm a celebrity, and today, I'm gonna die!".
Rosa: None of that is true.
  • Body Horror: Hitchcock has some sort of parasite living in his ear that effects his sense of balance.
  • Call-Back: There are several nods towards last season's Thanksgiving episode.
    • Jake is left in charge of the precinct during Thanksgiving because he still hates the holiday and doesn't have any plans to celebrate.
    • Boyle continues to call the holiday "Turkey Day" as per last year's "Boyle Bingo".
    • Terry's brother-in-law, Zeke, is back in town and continues to make him feel small.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Jake Peralta is ultra clear about sending an e-mail with his condolences to Captain Holt from his personal e-mail.
Amy: Hey, did you send that from your personal or work account?
Jake: Personal... It's a personal matter involving a personal friend and his personal uncle.
Amy: So you remembered to turn off your signature, right?
Jake: [Oh, Crap! all over his face] Oh, no!
  • Drama Queen: Gina immediately jumps to the conclusion that the powder is Anthrax and spends nearly the entire crisis acting like she's doomed. Rosa insists on trolling her about it.
  • Enemy Eats Your Lunch: Zeke takes Terry's sandwich right out of his plate without asking.
  • Gilligan Cut: Terry vouches for Jake's maturity only for the show to cut to Jake playing a game where the squad throws produce at him while he goal tends the elevator with a riot shield.
Terry: Don't worry about Jake. He's going to do great. He can be very responsible.
Cut to Jake being anything but responsible
  • Hidden Depths: Rosa reveals that she is a huge fan of Something's Gotta Give and recommends that everyone should watch the precinct's bootleg copy to pass the time while the powder is being analyzed. She even smiles while talking about it.
  • Jerkass:
    • In his brief previous appearance, Terry's brother-in-law Zeke was definitely annoying, but here he seems like even more of a jerk, like stealing Terry's sandwich or getting angry over the fact that Terry had to stop DVRing a game due to work emergency.
    • The defense lawyer who incites a riot. Jake talks to him in confidence, yet he immediately betrays his trust.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite her being a perpetual wet blanket, Amy takes part in the produce throwing game and cheers when she wins.
  • Number Two: Charles asks to be appointed to this position by name, comparing himself to Tinkerbell. After things go sideways and Jake shapes up, he makes Amy his Number Two instead.
  • Office Sports: Everyone is supposed to fling gourds (Thanksgiving decor) and hit the elevator door. Jake tries to dodge them with a police shield.
  • Shout-Out: Jake quotes a line from Captain Phillips while reminding everyone that he's in charge. He only realizes that the line comes from a movie later on and says the quote again, complete with accent.
Jake: Look at me! I'm the captain now!
  • Tempting Fate: Holt asks Jake to avoid burning the precinct down. Cue disgruntled civilian setting Hitchcock's nap couch on fire.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Invoked. When Holt demanded an explanation for everything that had gone wrong, Jake said "It all started when Charles wanted to say 'succulent'". Holt's reaction indicated that he thought it was entirely plausible that this would lead to complete pandemonium.
