Recap / Black Lightning 2018 S 3 E 13 Grab The Strap

Go To

Black Lightning and his team descend upon Markovia on a mission to rescue Lynn who finds herself in even more trouble when she meets Gravedigger, a metahuman on the Markovian side.

  • Affably Evil: Gravedigger is friendly, honourable and wants to avoid unnecessary bloodshed.
  • Atrocious Alias: A drunken Jefferson tells Gambi he never much cared for "Black Lightning", but it stuck.
  • Batman Grabs a Gun: Jefferson is willing to kill to get Lynn back.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: When Jefferson objects to saving Tobias Whale, Major Grey points out that he is the only one who can provide them with a stabilizing element for the pod kids.
  • Category Traitor: Lynn is shocked that Gravedigger is on the Markovians' side, as an American.
  • Compelling Voice: Gravedigger's metahuman powers give him complete control over anybody he orders around. The only one immune to it is Khalil. Lynn eventually develops a counter against it and then replicates it to control Colonel Mosin.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Despite getting some good hits in and earning Gravedigger's respect, the latter still dispatches Khalil fairly easily.
  • Evil Laugh: Tobias has one when he realizes that an Extraction Team is storming the Markovians' base.
  • Give Me a Reason: After having enough of Sergeant Grayle's aggressive behaviour, Brandon powers up and dares him to come at him.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Lynn uses Gravedigger's powers to force Colonel Mosin to put on his own Shock Collar and later forces him to shock himself until he passes out.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Jefferson blasts Gravedigger so hard that the lightning pierces through his torso.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Sergeant Grayle tells Jefferson about the order to kill Lynn if she can't be extracted. Fortunately, TC has already turned off Erica's brainchip by then.
    • Jefferson learns that Tobias Whale has found out his secret identity.
  • Logical Weakness: Brandon, whose powers are earthbound, gets air-sick and unstable when flying for too long. Khalil has to Pressure Point him using Kyūsho Jitsu to keep him quiet.
  • Make Way for the New Villains: Gravedigger puts Colonel Mosin in his place and takes over the operation.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Dr. Jace lampshades that Gravedigger didn't earn his moniker for nothing.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Gravedigger paralyzes the entire team, save for the wounded Khalil and Lynn, who is forced to go with him to save her friends lives. Then a badly wounded Jefferson arrives at the last second and blasts Gravedigger, enabling the team to escape.
  • No Social Skills: Erica finds TC pretty creepy, especially after he touches her hair. Though as he later reveals, he didn't actually mean to hit on her, he disabled her brainchip.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Brandon makes it clear that he doesn't care one bit about the mission, and the second he hears where Dr. Jace is, he goes rogue, only being stopped from killing her by Sergeant Grayle at the last second.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Jennifer tries to encourage Khalil by pointing out that she too killed for Odell.
  • Pet the Dog: It's not entirely clear if she is genuinely concerned, or merely pragmatic, but Jace seems genuinely concerned over Lynn's safety this episode.
  • Reluctant Hero: Khalil at first refuses to join Jefferson's team twice.
  • The Resenter: Jennifer is still angry at Anissa and her father for keeping Khalil's fate secret from her.
  • Save the Villain:
    • Jefferson is forced to rescue Tobias, much to his chagrin.
    • Sergeant Grayle saves Dr. Jace from being killed by Brandon.
  • So Proud of You: Gambi notes on how far Jefferson has come, and how proud his father would've been of him.
  • Stealth Pun: Jefferson pierces Gravedigger with his lightning blast.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork:
    • Jefferson's Ragtag Bunch of Misfits clearly don't like working with each other. Grayle and Brandon can't stand each other, Erica finds TC creepy, Anissa doesn't trust Khalil, just for starters.
    • Lynn decides to work together with Dr. Jace to counter Gravedigger's powers and escape.
  • Unknown Rival: Dr. Jace doesn't even know who Brandon is.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Tobias gets away when Gravedigger dispatches Jefferson.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • The Markovians built a blast door that is able to withstand Jefferson's and Anissa's combined assault, which only breaks down after Erica releases several absorbed punches from Anissa.
    • Despite Khalil's extensive martial arts knowledge, Gravedigger is able to handily dispatch him.
  • Working with the Ex: Jennifer and Khalil go on the mission together.
  • You Killed My Mother: Brandon finally confronts Jace, but Grayle stops him from killing her.
