Maon Kurosaki (January 13, 1988 - February 16, 2023) was a Japanese singer, lyricist, actress and former gravure idol, as well as a usual anime song performer.

Kurosaki, a massive otaku herself, realized in 2010 her childhood dream of being an anisong singer. After being scouted in a bar in Akihabara, she joined Geneon Universal Entertainment (now NBC Universal Entertainment Japan), for which she made her debut performing the various ending songs of Highschool of the Dead. She added a couple endings in A Certain Magical Index, where she started the trend of sharing works with fellow Geneon star Mami Kawada until the latter's retirement. She continued hitting regularly the anime scene since, including notably a song for Danganronpa, until her premature death at the age of 35 on February 16, 2023 after a long battle with chronic epidural hematoma. May she rest in peace.

Aside from her solo career, she was the singer of the short-lived and sporadically active synthpop band Altima.

Her music style was mainly J-pop/rock, featuring an array of existential-feeling vocals and lyrics that reveal her soft spot for Evanescence. She was known to read a lot of manga and light novels in order to better understand them before writing their lyrics.

She debuted as a film actress in 2018, playing Michiru Arisugawa in the Blood-C live action Interquel duology Blood-Club Dolls.

Discography

  • 2010: H.O.T.D.
  • 2011: Butterfly Effect
  • 2013: Vertical Horizon
  • 2014: Reincarnation
  • 2015: Mystical Flowers

Her work contains examples of:

  • Amnesiac Hero: Michiru, her character in Blood-Club Dolls, is an amnesiac seeking to unveil the truth behind the death of her family.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: She was a fan of the aesthetic and named it as a big influence on her music. Her being a fan of Evanescence as said above was likely not a coincidence.
  • Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: She described this way her duet with Sayaka Kanda, with Maon as the energetic and Kanda as the soft-spoken (soft-sung in this case).
  • Gratuitous English: "Scars" contains several statements in English, reflected in its title.
  • Image Song: Given her custom of reading the series' original material before writing the song, she stated she often unconsciously empathized with certain characters in her head.
  • Multilingual Song: Some of her songs contain lines in English, although this is far from usual in anisong.
  • "No More Holding Back" Speech: Song rather than speech. Her closing theme for Hellsing Ultimate, "Scars", tells how her scars give a sense to her life.
  • Passing the Torch: In a way, her relationship to Mami Kawada came across in this manner. They had a somewhat similar style, and they were both fans of writing their songs only after reading the manga or light novel in question to get inspired. Kawada's star career went from 2005 to 2016, while Kurosaki's started in 2010 until her death in 2023.
  • Renaissance Man: Or woman, in this case. Cosplayer, singer, lyricist, idol, performer and actress... There weren't many things in the anime business she hadn't done.
  • Self-Empowerment Anthem: The aptly named "Snap out of it!!", which she performed with Mami Kawada.
