Memes / The Princess Bride

Go To

You could probably make a convincing argument that The Princess Bride is one of - if not the - most quoted movies in history (just look at how many tropes it named). Anything else would be inconceivable.

  • "Hello! My Name Is Inigo Montoya. You Killed My Father. Prepare to Die." note
    • Stop Saying That!
    • After Australian video game developer Ally Mclean used a still of it in a humourous meeting for prospective game devs, Inigo Montoya's introduction is sometimes used as a model for an introduction during networking events. It delivers a polite greeting, states the party's name, introduces a relevant relationship, and sets expectations.
  • "Inconceivable!"
  • "Anybody want a peanut?" Bonus points if followed up with Vizzini's "Dyaaah!"
  • "Have fun Storming the Castle!" note
  • "Rodents of Unusual Size? I don't think they exist."
  • "I Am Not Left-Handed!"
  • "Ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates? Morons!"
  • "Drop. Your. Sword."
  • "And remember, this is for posterity. So, be honest. How do you feel?"
  • "To the Pain means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever."
    • "I think you're bluffing."
  • "As you wish."
    • "That day she was amazed to find that every time he said 'As you wish' what he actually meant was 'I love you'"
      • This also leads to loads of crossover jokes whenever any fictional character says "As you wish," such as on this very wiki.
  • "Truly, you have a dizzying intellect."
    • "Wait 'til I get going! ...Where was I?"
      • "Australia."
  • This trope is Only Mostly Dead. There's a big difference between Mostly Dead, and All Dead.
    • If he's All Dead there's only one thing you can do — go through his pockets and look for loose change.
  • "You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is 'never get involved in a land war in Asia.' But only slightly less well known is this: "[insert perceived blunder here]!"
    • For that matter, even without the full line, "never get involved in a land war in Asia" can be cited as a terrible mistake someone could make.
  • "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA—*collapse*"
  • "Maawwwage. Maawwwage is what bwings us togethah, too-day."
    • "Dat bwessed awangement. Dat dweam wifin a dweam."
    • "Wuv, twu wuv."
    • "Have you... da wing?"
  • "Do you hear that? That is the sound of ultimate suffering. I made that sound the day [insert event here]. [insert person here] makes it now."
  • "NOT TO FIFTY!"
  • "If I had a month to plan, maybe I could come up with something, but this... *shakes head*"
    • "You just shook your head! Doesn't that make you happy?"
  • "If only we had a wheelbarrow, that would be something!"
  • "I'm on the brute squad." "You are the brute squad!"
  • "I am the Dread Pirate Roberts!"
    • "The Dread Pirate Roberts takes no survivors!"
    • "The Dread Pirate Roberts is here for your soul!"
  • "Yes, you're very smart. Shut up."
  • "Let me explain... No, there is too much. Let me sum up."
  • "In the history of the kiss there have been five kisses rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind." Swap out the word "kiss" and associated adjectives as needed.
  • Just to give an idea of how memetic this film is, a twitter user decided to live tweet their reactions to the movie live as it was happening. They responded with absolute shock whenever a meme they recognized showed up, which seemed to happen every five minutes or so.
  • The actors have been known to quote mine the movie for statements decades after the fact. Upon hearing a rumor that someone was planning to remake the movie, Cary Elwes promptly tweeted "There is a shortage of perfect movies in the world. It would be a pity to damage this one." He also retweeted his quote about how comfortable masks are to encourage safe behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic.
