Wolf Girl is an Australian novel series written by Anh Do.

The series centres around ‘Wolf Girl’ Gwen and her dog pack: Sunrise, Tiny the chihuahua, Brutus the mastiff, Nosey, Pirate and Eagle. Note: the series often has an all-ever revolving cast, so changes to pack members often happen.

The books currently released include:

  1. Into The Wild (2019)
  2. The Great Escape (2019)
  3. The Secret Cave (2020)
  4. The Traitor (2020)
  5. Across the Sea (2021)
  6. Animal Train (2021)
  7. Crash Course (2022)
  8. Welcome to Paradise (2022)
  9. Sink or Swim (2023)
  10. The Race is On (2023)

Wolf Girl provides examples of:

  • A Dog Named "Dog": Eagle is literally named ‘Eagle’. Sunrise was also originally named ‘Puppy’.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Sunrise and her family being made guard wolves by the Braxans would be unrealistic, as wolves are terrible guards dogs. Even if they were wolfdogs, their kind would still be difficult to train.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: The Braxans are not above animal trafficking and selling exotic pets.
  • Beware of the Nice Ones: Gwen is the most compassionate of the group, but when someone lies to her…
  • Cain and Abel: Gwen is the Abel to Kate’s Cain, after it’s revealed that Kate has become a Braxan commander.
  • Canine Companion: Gwen’s pack serves as this, as they travel along many adventures.
  • Characterisation Marches On: In earlier books, Brutus was a violent and troublesome dog, and even attacked Gwen when they first met. However in later book, Brutus is shown as a slightly grouchy, but more friendly dog.
  • Chocolate Baby: Sunrise looks very suspiciously different from the rest of her family.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Rupert might be the less physically fit of the group and a bumbling fool at times, but he can still fight when necessary and uses improvised weapons. He is also very smart and knows how to hack and use electronics.
  • Crisis Crossover:
    • Book 7 is set in the Northern Kingdom, and the Mythix conveniently appear when Gwen and the pack are captured by the Kingdom Guard. When Tiny is crushed by a dinosaur skeleton and nearly dies, Gwen carries him over to Kelly for the dog to be healed.
    • The Bonus Adventures at the end of Books 5-8 feature Skydragon, who also conveniently appears to save Tiny from falling off a cliff and helps the pack fight of the pursuing soldiers.
  • Angry Guard Dog: In Book 4, the pack encounter another wolf pack led by Braxan commander Captain Stone. The same pack also happens to be Sunrise’s long lost family.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: According to Kate, her parents believed she ‘would have a better life’ if she was given up.
  • Disney Death: Eagle is shot down by the Braxans and is presumed dead by the pack. The next book, however, reveals that Eagle was just knocked out with a tranquilliser and is locked in their animal train.
  • Given Name Reveal: The Braxans are finally given a name in Book 7. Previously, Gwen woul refer to them as either ‘soldiers’ or ‘the enemy’.
    • ‘Officer Clipboard’, one of the few soldiers who Gwen doesn’t know the name of and makes up a personal name for her, is revealed to be named ‘Canning’ from a chapter from Commander Kate’s perspective.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Sunrise is a golden wolf, and her heart is pure.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: At the end of Book 5, Rupert pretends to sneeze in order to avoid the soliders’ attention on the hiding pack. He gets captured and we never hear of him again.
    • In the same book, Eagle distracts the soldiers while the rest of the pack is hiding and is shot down. She returns in Book 6 as part of the animal train.
  • Meaningful Rename: Gwen renames Puppy as Sunrise after the wolf symbolism of being the ‘first rays of light after the dark night’.
  • The Napoleon: Tiny is, well, tiny. But never, ever underestimate the chihuahua.
  • Noble Wolf: Sunrise is a fierce, but ultimately loyal and virtuous dog.
  • Mook: The Braxans are generic bad guys, and most are just cannon fodder without names.
  • Parental Abandonment: Gwen and Kate’s parents gave away Kate to the Braxans, where she eventually rose as commander.
  • Switching P.O.V.: While most of the chapters are from Gwen’s first person POV, there are few that switch to another character’s third person POV, usually when Gwen isn’t in the main focus.
  • Great Escape: Book 2 (literally called ‘The Great Escape’) has the pack tracking down and busting Gwen (alongside Rupert) out of prison.
  • Right-Hand Attack Dog: The pack are all of this to Gwen, as they attack any soldiers on her command.
  • Suffer the Slings: Gwen carries her signature sling, and uses it as her main weapon when fighting the enemy.
  • Savage Wolves: Captain Stone’s wolves are aggressive, and will stop any intruders or escapees.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Out of all the things Gwen and the pack encounter on their adventures, they all have a great fear of spiders and rats.
    • Brutus has his own fear of leaping over large distances.
