Irony in this series.
  • Homer, a Walking Disaster Area and the most reckless and irresponsible character on the show, is the town's nuclear safety inspector.
  • In "King Size Homer":
Lisa: I think it's ironic that Dad saved the day while a slimmer man would have fallen to his death.
Bart: And I think it's ironic that for once, Dad's butt prevented the release of toxic ga—
    Marge: Bart!
  • Also, from "Homer The Vigilante":
Homer: So, Mr. Burglar. It seems the cat has been caught by exactly the person who was trying to catch him.
    Skinner: How ironic.
  • Then there's "A Star Is Burns", the time Barney wins the town's film festival with an entry depicting the hardships of suffering from alcoholism.
Barney: I've learned that I have a gift to share with the world. From now on, I'll be a new Bernard Gumbel; clean, sober, and hardworking.
Quimby: Congratulations, Barney, and enjoy your grand prize: a lifetime supply of Duff beer. (curtains open to reveal a huge truck filled with Duff Beer)
Barney: Huh? (pulls up sleeve) Just hook it into my veins!
  • Another good example is "the Homer" in "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?", the Car Built for Homer. It (in)famously ended up costing $82,000.00note . The irony is that it was supposed to be the car designed by the average citizen for the average citizen. The new car was also supposed to increase Powell Motors' sales. It ended up bankrupting them.
  • In 'Homer and Apu' the two go to meet the head of the Kwik-E-Mart who resides in the words first convenience store, Said store being at the top of a mountain range.
  • In "The Dad Who Knew Too Little", a private eye ends up getting blinded, but Homer instead points out this:
Homer: How ironic. Now he's blind after a life of enjoying being able to see.
  • "Miracle On Evergreen Terrace" has Bart accidentally set all the Christmas presents on fire with a firetruck.
  • In "Homerazzi", the valuables the Simpsons put in a fire-proof safe end up setting themselves on fire.
  • There are dozens of noncanonical "Treehouse Of Horror" episodes featuring supernatural stuff. The show itself is already a Fantasy Kitchen Sink. It's just that everyone ignores the supernatural stuff.
  • In "Bart Gets An Elephant", when Marge forces the family into some spring cleaning, Marge suggests that Bart listen to the radio to help motivate him. The song that starts playing is "16 Tons" by Merle Travis, a song about being in debt to a Company Town. Bart's stone-faced reaction tells that the irony is not lost on him.
  • In "Dude, Where's My Ranch?", Homer writes "Everybody Hates Ned Flanders", a song about how he hates Flanders. It gets so popular that Homer eventually starts to hate his own song, while Flanders himself grows to enjoy it.
  • In "Habeas Tortoise", Homer joins a group dedicated to finding how how Slow Leonard, the zoo's tortoise, disappeared. The group comes up with a number of outrageous conspiracy theories which worries the family. Lisa even uses the term "rabbit hole" to describe these theories. Homer later finds Slow Leonard after falling down a hill and crawling into a cave where a rabbit lives. Lisa is amused to point out he solved the mystery by going down a literal rabbit hole.
