You Were Never Meant To Be A Hero is a Dream SMP Super Fic written by FlameDraco on Archive of Our Own. The fic is currently finished, though there are more fics in the series.

The fic follows Wilbur Minecraft, a Rescue Hero named Magpie who is overlooked and underappreciated for his efforts. That is, until a villain named Ace decides to claim him as his nemesis, with an ulterior motive of trying to seduce Wilbur away from being a hero…

You Were Never Meant To Be A Hero contains examples of:

  • Break the Cutie: Ace had already clocked onto Wilbur breaking down at the beginning of the fic, but oh, does it get much worse for him. Especially when Ace kidnaps him and a bunch of hostages to get Techno to choose between the two. When Techno chooses to save the hostages with no hesitation, even Ace is stunned. It only gets worse when Wilbur is told he's going to be removed from Ace's case. It's even worse in an alternate timeline – Wilbur gets betrayed by everyone in his family, has his wings clipped and then is locked in a room with nothing but indoctrination material.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Wilbur's singing tends to have a calming effect. Turns out, he wasn't as powerless as he thought.
  • Child Soldiers: One of the main reasons a lot of villains hate Heroes so much.
  • Comforting Comforter: Ace/Quackity does this when Wilbur has his breakdown.
  • Compelling Voice: Wilbur discovers that he's had this ability his entire life and never knew it.
  • Costume Porn: While hero outfits are ignored entirely, the villain outfits in this fic are described in detail.
  • Disowned Parent: Wilbur and Tommy disown Phil for being a terrible father.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Wilbur tries to copy a move that Ace used against him in one of the early chapters. He ends up killing the man he tried this on.
  • Easily Forgiven: Wilbur forgives Quackity of doing a lot of things, from murder, to kidnapping him. This is mostly because Quackity is also one of the kindest people Wilbur knows, and the only one that actually respects him.
  • First-Name Basis: Most people only call Wilbur by his hero name, "Magpie". Ace uses Wilbur's name to try and appeal himself to Wilbur more.
  • Flight of Romance: Having wings, Quackity and Wilbur often take romantic flights.
  • The Gadfly: A lot of Ace/Quackity's flirting can come across as this.
  • Grey-and-Gray Morality: As the writer has stated a few times, the entire point of the Perspectiverse series is to explore how nothing is ever black and white and everything depends entirely on the point of view.
  • Knight Templar Parent: After Wilbur disowns Phil, he becomes this to Tommy. It doesn't work out.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Ace/Quackity has this in spades. He mostly uses this against Wilbur, but pretty commonly uses this against others, especially heroes.
  • Noodle Incident: One time, Wilbur was really hungry and forgot to eat something, and apparently, an innocent squirrel suffered for it. He refuses to talk about it.
  • Parental Abandonment: Wilbur's mother Kristin was sent away on a mission to another country, and Phil has been nothing but a neglectful parent in her absence.
  • Parental Favoritism: Due to Phil's over-protectiveness, Wilbur felt like Techno was his father's favorite child.
  • Shipper on Deck: Tommy, Tubbo and Ranboo all tease and encourage Wilbur and Quackity at various points during the fic. Techno also has one moment of support for his brother's relationship.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Ace is known as the TNT Villain for a reason. Later, Wilbur also enjoys using explosives as Siren.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Wilbur goes through a lot of training before he becomes Siren. He earns himself the rank of Number One Villain.
  • Twin Desynch: Wilbur and Techno are twins, but are never mistaken for each other due their hair being different, and one of them having wings.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Things would have gone differently if Techno had simply chosen to save Wilbur over the hostages.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: If Ace/Quackity has the chance to, he'll rip into the heroes. Except for Wilbur.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Wilbur is horrified to learn that since every hero has been given permission to use lethal force against villains of a high enough rank, two teenage villains were at risk of being killed by them.
