The Berserker's Bride is a How to Train Your Dragon fanfic written by Princess Falling Star.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was born useless to her tribe. Being a girl and a hiccup, her only value was that of a bride. So she was traded like a yak to the son of the Berserker chief. The boy is a sadistic madman and now she must find a way to survive this marriage away from everything she's ever known. Even if that means befriending a dragon.

Story has not been updated since June 2017 and is presumably abandoned.

The Berserker's Bride provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Heroism: Downplayed, as while he did eventually become a good guy late into Race to the Edge, here Dagur the Deranged shows his devotion to his wife fairly early on and is essentially a protagonist the whole time (albeit the "Chaotic Neutral Blood Knight" type of protagonist).
    • In the series, the Skrill plays antagonist for most of its appearances (also downplayed in that it becomes neutral to the riders in its latest appearance). Here, Hiccup manages to train it, befriend it and name it "Maelstrom", becoming Dagur's dragon.
  • Adaptational Villainy: While Alvin the Treacherous was a villain in the franchise, here he dies before his Heel–Face Turn, having planned on murdering Dagur, taking Hiccup (who is a young teenager) as his wife and then use her and her then-unborn child to take control of the Hooligan and Berserker tribes (as well as to spite Stoick).
  • Altar Diplomacy: Dagur and Hiccup's marriage was strictly political, or at least that was how it started…
  • Alternate Universe Fic: Here, Hiccup is female and is married off to Dagur in a political marriage.
  • Attempted Rape: Finding Hiccup attractive when visiting the village, Snotlout tries coming on to her. Not taking no for an answer, he nearly forces himself on her, only for her to respond by brandishing a knife against his neck. He tries again later that night in her cottage, only to bail when he sees that Dagur is with her.
  • Behind Every Great Man: While Dagur is de facto chief, Hiccup is the only one who takes the job seriously, keeping Dagur focused and making sure that protocol is followed.
  • Death by Adaptation: In the show, Oswald the Agreeable went missing, Dagur only claiming to have killed him so that he could become in-charge of the Berserker Tribe in his absence. Here, he really did kill him when he threatened to break off his marriage with Hiccup for his unruly behavior.
    • In the original animated series Alvin the Treacherous eventually makes peace with Hiccup and the rest of the Hooligan Tribe. Here though, Hiccup manages to rip his throat out with her teeth right after she gave birth!
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Vessa acts like an older sister to Hiccup, teaching her how to be a wife to Dagur, looking after her while she's pregnant and even saving her from an assassination attempt.
  • Just Friends: Fishlegs has always had a crush on Hiccup, Hiccup having always seen him as her best friend while on Berk.
  • Kissing Cousins: Hiccup and Snotlout were originally meant to marry (Snotlout thinking that she was useless while she thought of him as The Bully), only for her to instead marry Dagur to unite their tribes. After she visits Berk with Dagur and reveals that she is pregnant, Snotlout tries coming on to her (thinking that she's now attractive) and even almost tries raping her.
  • Mistaken for Pregnant: Inverted. After finding out that she is pregnant, Hiccup tries telling Dagur through hints about any sorts of changes in her appearance. When he remarks that she has gained weight (something he says is a compliment since she was always lanky and curveless), she shouts at him that she is pregnant and not fat. He faints there on the spot.
  • Reformed Rakes: Dagur is so devoted to his wife that she is the only person he actually listens to, her influence having prevented various acts of murder, violence and war.
  • Shout-Out: The arc in the fic where Hiccup learns to seduce Dagur is almost beat-for-beat Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo’s first arc in Season One of Game of Thrones. Word of God flat-out admits this.
  • Spit Take: Everyone in Berk's great hall does this when Dagur casually slips Hiccup's pregnancy.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Hiccup becomes pregnant in her teens. Justified, since Hiccup was married off in a political marriage in an era where marrying young was the norm.
  • Token Minority: Vessa, a Roman ex-thrall among Vikings.
