- Cowboy Cop: In the real world, his actions during investigations would get him arrested, demoted, and/or fired.
- Limited Wardrobe: He always wore a black suit with a white shirt and black tie. The only real variation was the textures and patterns on his ties.
- Married to the Job: This is one of the two reasons why he ended up divorced in Season 3 (the other is sleeping with his co-worker Samantha) and losing custody of his two daughters.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: His real name is John Michael.
- Time-Shifted Actor: L.B. Tracey plays Jack in flashbacks during "Malone v. Malone" and "John Michaels."

- Time-Shifted Actor: In "Nickel and Dimed: Part 2," Sam is played by Aspen Payge and Sage Mears as a little girl and a teenager, respectively.

- Did Not Get the Girl: He and Samantha finally get together in Season 3 after 2 years of attraction, but it fizzles when he finally gets fed up with her reluctance to advance the relationship, as well as suspecting that she's still in love with Jack. Despite most of their subsequent scenes strongly implying that they still care about each other, they never get back together.
- Even the Guys Want Him: Jack realizes that a suspect is gay when he notices him checking Martin out.
- New Meat: He joined the team in the Pilot episode.
Elena Delgado
Special Agent Elena Delgado
- Played by: Roselyn Sánchez
- Cowboy Cop: Elena isn't as bad as Jack in this regard, but she does have her moments such as when she got rough with a suspect who "gave her attitude" in her debut episode and when she held Carlos's partner at gunpoint in the episode where her daughter was kidnapped.
- Dirty Harriet: In her first episode, she poses as a call girl to get information from a suspect. In "Candy", she goes undercover as a stripper.
- Good Cop/Bad Cop: She tries this routine on a prostitute in "From The Ashes" with Sam serving as the good cop. Sam doesn't appreciate this tactic and tells Elena that such actions will not be tolerated by her.
- Sixth Ranger: She joins the team in season four as the sixth member. Jack brings her onboard because they are spread too thin.
- Survivor Guilt: In "Candy", she expresses sadness that she is alive to be with her daughter while the victim's son will grow up without his mother.
