Rhodes family
As a whole
- Animal Lover: The Rhodes family work as conservationists for a living, so this is a given. Arthur Rhodes and his assistant Tembo nurture injured Kenyan creatures and make sure they're in stable habitats, while his children Jackie and Andrew rescue an injured bushbaby they find near his vehicle.
- Badass Family: They work together to protect African wildlife and have done so for years.
- Canon Foreigner: Jackie and her father were in the novel, but Andrew and Penny weren't.
- Evil Colonialist: Inverted with the Rhodes family. They are British and Jackie's father is associated with them, but they're nothing short of kind and caring to the various animals they meet.
- Friend to All Living Things: Jackie's father is a wildlife conservation officer and he raised Jackie and Andrew to always be gentle to animals. Their many friends include rhinos, elephants, ostriches, baboons, lions, waterbucks, and impalas.
- Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Jackie is a brazen tomboy ready to put up a fight and stubborn to the core, while Andrew gets freaked out easily, can't handle intense situations and is a bit of a Fragile Flower.
- Nature Lover: All of the Rhodes family, because of their jobs as part of the Wildlife Conservation Bureau. They care for injured animals to the best of their abilities, oppose hunting and are involved in taking down poachers.
Jackie Rhodes

- Boyish Short Hair: To the point you'd actually be forgiven for thinking she's a boy - it goes right above her shoulders and barely below her face.
- Child of Two Worlds: Jackie is white British, but she's lived in Kenya ever since she was three, she wishes to stay there even after she's ordered to leave.
- Gender-Blender Name: Jackie's full name is Jacqueline, but she calls herself Jackie, and so does everyone else.
- Historical Domain Character: William Stevenson based Jackie on his own daughter, who grew up in Kenya and was similarly a playful Wild Child.
- Ill Girl: Jackie falls ill in one episode, and Safai cares for her and brings her food when she's unable to move and has to rest.
- Innocent Blue Eyes: Jackie has blue eyes and is a heroic girl ready to put the safety of animals above her own.
- Miss Fanservice: Jackie Rhodes, despite being a 12 year old, proudly shows off her busty figure in her bikini from time to time.
- Passionate Sports Girl: A wild tomboy since birth, Jackie enjoys, swimming, horseback riding, and anything she to do animals.
- Tareme Eyes: Jackie has big blue eyes, is a Nature Lover and quite innocent and unsuspecting.
- Tomboy: Jackie dresses like a boy, likes to play with wild animals, enjoys swimming and fishing, rides a horse, and is very athletic.
Andrew Rhodes

- Hero-Worshipper: To his dad, as he wants to be a Wildlife Conservation Officer just like him. However, he later realizes the job isn't for him, and decides to be a vetinerian after meeting Hannah.
- Screams Like a Little Girl: It doesn't take much to scare Andrew, and he screams very easily.
Arthur Rhodes

- Berserk Button: Because of his job, Jackie's father Arthur hates animal poachers, especially those that attack vulnerable species. He works with the police to track them down and keep them away from his livestock.
- Failed a Spot Check: He nearly ran over Murphy with his car, had Jackie and Andrew not stopped him. Murphy ended up being fine, but sustained a lot of injuries.
Penny Rhodes
Penny Rhodes (ペニー・ローズ)

- Artists Are Attractive: Her hobbies are drawing and painting, and she is a pretty woman.
- Education Mama: She wants Andrew to attend a prestigous school in England, where her grandparents live.

- Pink Is Feminine: She always wears pink clothing, and even the bows in her hair are pink.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Kate is the girly girl to Jackie's tomboy; in spite of being polar opposites the girls are best friends and Jackie often invites her to see the vast array of animals under the Rhodes' care.
Tembo
Tembo Murumbi (テンボ・ムルンビ)
Voiced by: Jurota Kusugi (Japanese), Mark Camacho ( (English)
- Adaptational Job Change: In the original book, he was the Rhodes family's servant. Here, he is her father's assistant.
- Clear My Name: He is accused of kidnapping Jackie (even though Jackie chose to stay in Africa and he was merely her family's assitant) and branded a criminal. He does eventually prove his innocence, but after many harrowing experiences with the police.
- Cool Old Guy: Jackie views him as such because he's her father's assistant and helps him protect the wild animals of Kenya.
- Friend to All Living Things: Like Jackie and Arthur, he adores animals and is a walking encyclopedia on animal care. When Jackie presents him an injured Murphy
- Intergenerational Friendship: He's an adult and about her father's age, but Jackie thinks the world of him, and he thinks the same of her.
- Nice Guy: He doesn't have a single hateful bone in his body and adores animals, and also protects Jackie when she's left alone in Kenya.
- Scary Black Man: The media implies he is this because he "kidnapped" Jackie. However, he's actually very sweet and caring.

Murphy
- Adaptational Name Change: Murphy was called Kamau in the book.
- Extreme Omnivore: Murphy eats candy, biscuits and insects (such as grasshoppers and flies).
- Ridiculously Cute Critter: Murphy has large eyes, big, furry ears and an Adorable Fluffy Tail.
