Second Argentine Republic

Flag of Argentina (Original Constitution Restored)
Official Name: Argentine Republic
Ruling Party: MRN/FTdPA - Seineldínistanote
Ideology: Ecclesiastical Nationalismnote
Lying over the pampas and the frigid southern half of the South American continent is Argentina. Since the overthrow of pro-American President Carlos Menem in the December Coup of 1990, the country has gone in the complete opposite direction - adopting Spanish-style Fascism and isolating itself from the rest of the American continent, becoming Germany's most important regional ally. But the regime has been severely weakened with the death of its founder, Mohamed Ali Seineldín. The splits in the MRN have become evident in his absence, while Argentina's worsening economic situation have led Argentines into becoming bolder in their opposition to the dictatorship. Argentina sits at a crossroads, and the next few months will dictate what future it wants for itself.

    General Tropes
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: In a final hail mary to save the regime, Argentina will launch a surprise attack and invade the Falklands, despite knowing that even the Germans won't support such a move.
  • Allohistorical Allusion:
    • Mohamed Seineldín was an Argentinian general and war leader who was one of the main figures of the Carapintadas, groups of disgruntled right-wing officers who were frustrated with the the government of Carlos Menem. In this timeline, Seineldín and the Carapintadas overthrow Menem and install a Catholic fascist dictatorship, only their motivations and slightly different.
    • The Seineldínista Regime is bears a passing resemblance to the National Reorganization Process, both being far-right anti-communist military government that rely strongly on nationalism to survive. Like the National Reorganization Process, the Seineldínistas will also invade the Falklands and use it as a political tool to get people to support the dictatorship.
    • The Falklands War will still happen in this timeline, only 30 years later and between America and Argentina instead.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: During the late 90s, the Argentine government embarked on a developmentalist spree and unveiled a large "ten year plan" to improve Argentine infrastructure and public services, hoping to increase living standards and double productivity without the private sector. The plan ended up increasing expenditures for Argentina and leaving the country endebted to the European Customs Union.
  • Big Bad: Argentina is a Catholic fascist dictatorship that is behind several far-right (and sometimes far-left) anti-American movements in South America. It is the greatest threat to American influence in the continent and opposed by virtually every country in the region.
  • Commie Nazis: Argentina supports left-wing anti-imperialist movements in the region, seeing them as allies in their fight against American hegemony violently repressing domestic left-wing groups.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: One of the outcomes of the Falklands Crisis sees America backing down, not wanting to provoke a nuclear war over an insignificant island. The world is left in shock as the Argentines humiliate the Americans and the Seineldínista Regime consolidates, everything going just as they originally hoped.
  • Cult of Personality: There is a substantial personality cult around former President Juan Domingo Perón and Mohamed Ali Seineldín. The informal motto of the regime is "Seineldín, Dios y Perón"note , as both Perón and Seineldín are worshipped for saving Argentina from American imperialism and cultural degeneracy while preserving western civilization.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: If America reacts and sends the USMC to re-take the Falklands, Argentina will always lose the fight against America's superior military.
  • The Dreaded: Neighboring countries are terrified of Argentina's influence, fearing the possibility of an Argentine-inspired military coup in their own countries and doing everything in their power to put pressure into the regime.
  • Final Solution: Between 1995 and 1999, Argentina deported, imprisoned and executed Mapuches, Afro-Argentinians and Jews. The three peoples were deemed to be subhumans or burdens to the state, and many fled to Chile or found themselves working to death in the various concentration camps across Patagonia.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Argentina had begun to approach the United States under the Presidency of Carlos Menem and was on the path to democracy in the 1980s. Then came Seineldín's coup, and Argentina did a full 360° turn and became a Fascist dictatorship aligned with the Germans.
  • Patriotic Fervor: Argentina still claims the Falklands and invokes irredentism among the population whenever tensions with the United States rise. In hopes of uniting the country and bringing the population under the banner of anti-American nationalism in support of the current regime, Argentina will take this to a next level and invade the Falklands without a declaration of war.
  • People's Republic of Tyranny: Despite being an oppressive fascist dictatorship, Argentina still styles itself as a democratic republic.
  • Sword of Damocles: Threatened by Brazil's own nuclear program, Argentina began to develop nuclear weapons during the late 90s to dissuade its enemies from trying to use force against them. During the Falklands Crisis, Argentina threatens to use its nuclear arsenal against the United States should the latter react against the invasion, triggering fears of a nuclear war given the mystery surrounding Argentina's nuclear arsenal.
  • Villainous Legacy: Juan Domingo Perón's legacy is still felt in Argentina. Most citizens view him positively and the MRN makes heavy use of his image to legitimize its rule, portraying themselves as his ideological successor.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: The National Reconstruction Movement is split between Seineldinists, Orthodox Peronists, National Socialists and Conservatives. While the four groups unified behind Seineldín to support his rule, his death has caused them to drift apart and fight amongst themselves over what kind of path the regime should follow now that he's gone.

El Jefe

    Gustavo Breide Obeid
Role: Jefe de la Naciónnote
Party: MRN/FTdPA - Seineldínistanote
Ideology: Ecclesiastical Nationalismnote
One of the leaders of the December Coup and the direct successor to Seineldín himself, Gustavo Obeid inherited a regime that is clearly seeing its last moments. While Obeid's authority remains unquestioned, the MNR has begun to fracture into squabbling cliques while degenerate forces surround Argentina and wait for the right moment to strike. If Obeid wishes to see Seineldínism survive in his fatherland, he has to give his countrymen a common enemy to fight against.
  • Dragon Ascendant: Should the United States back down and allow Argentina to take the Falklands, Obeid's rule will be stronger than it's ever been and the regime will survive under his direction for the foreseeable future.
  • The Fundamentalist: Like his predecessor, he is a Catholic nationalist and a strong believer in religion as a central pillar of the state.
  • The Generalissimo: He rules over Argentina as a dictator, holding the supreme title of "Chief of the Nation".
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: If his gambit to invade the Falklands and humiliate the Americans fails, he will become massively unpopular and inadvertently cause the collapse of the regime.
  • Warhawk: Obeid is an Argentinian nationalist who isn't beneath using the military to invade other countries. Argentina invades the Falklands under his orders, sparking a crisis with the United States and drawing Argentina into war.
