Großgermanisches Reich

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nazi_flag.png
Europäische Zollverein, aka: European Customs Union
Einheitspakt, aka: Unity-Pakt
Official Name: Großgermanische Reich der Deutschen NationTr.
Ruling Party: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - Neu Konservativnote
Ideology: Reformed National Socialismnote
With Germany's defeat in the Second West Russian War and Speer's passing, its future had been tumultuous ever since. In response, more conservative, populist elements rose in popularity to combat Speer's reforms, hampering Germany's development even more. With a dire, uncertain future, will the Iron Eagle soar once again, or will it finally crash down with a thundering applause?
    General Tropes
  • Allohistorical Allusion:
    • The German Reich is sometimes compared to the PRC. This is downplayed by the fact the two governments are still drastically different in terms of politics and society.
    • The Reich's Nazi apologists in the American bloc are pejoratively known as "Goosies", alluding to the word "Tankie".
  • The Alternet: Thanks to the Cold War dragging into the digital age, the Internet is not universal like it is in OTL. Instead, the Germans have developed their own separate network known as Globales Netzwerk, or GloNetz.
  • Fascist, but Inefficient: While Speer's Reforms did make Germany into a functional state, his successors failed to govern with the same prowess as him. 30 years later, the German economy has been stagnant since the late 90s, while Germany's defeat in the Second West Russian War as well as the ongoing conflict in the Caucasus led to an excess in military spending, all of this while Germany's leaders have become all too alienated from the needs of the populace.
  • Space-Filling Empire: The Reich's de jure borders expand from the Caucasus all the way to Eastern France.

Reichskanzler (Before Die Turbulenzen)

    Udo Voigt
Role: Reichskanzlernote
Party: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - Neu Konservativnote
Ideology: Reformed National Socialismnote

  • Glorious Leader: Voigt has supreme power as Chancellor of Germany, and, like his predecessor, has ruled in a rather reactionary manner under the guise of restoring the "old ways".
  • Old Soldier: Voigt, who is in his 60s at the start of MTNO, served in the Wehrmacht during the Second West Russian War. His military credentials play a strong part in reinforcing his image as Germany's strongman dictator.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Voigt is an ardent Nazi, leading the more orthodox wing of the NSDAP that wishes to preserve the core founding ideas of Nazi Germany.

Reichskanzler (After Die Turbulenzen)

     Lothar Maier
Role: Reichskanzlernote
Party: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - Staatsreformistennote
Ideology: Technocratic Nazismnote

  • Internal Reformist: Maier is a technocrat, and will try to reform Germany into an efficient economic superpower to surpass the United States.
  • The Leader: When Die Turbulenzen causes the German economy to melt and paralyzes the entire nation, Maier rallies the party under his leadership, ousting Voigt and taking his place as Chancellor.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Maier's reforms are not intended to drive Germany towards political liberization at all. Maier himself is an extreme pragmatist, who believes a more technocratic form of governance will ensure a stable future.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Maier has to compromise with anti-Reform figures like Haider and Günzel in order to secure power.

Maier Cabinet

    Jörg Haider
Role: Parteiministernote
Party: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - Brauner Hauskreisnote
Ideology: Reformed National Socialismnote
The popular former Gauleiter of Carinthia, Maier is appointed to the Party Chancellery by Maier in an opportunistic alliance between the two, allowing Haider to rise higher in the political ladder while giving Maier credibility amongst the Gauleiters. The two eventually come into conflict as Maier tries to reform the Reichsgaus, leading to Haider forming the Brown House Circle and secretly working to undermine the Reichskanzlers.
  • The Conspiracy: The Brown House Circle led by Haider is a clique of disaffected Gauleiters and other party members made with the goal of undermining Maier's rule and eventually ousting him.
  • Crowd Pleaser: While other NSDAP members would prefer not to come in contact with the public too much, Haider is an ardent populist. His openness with the public as Gauleiter as well as his distance from wider party politics have led to him earning the love of many common citizens.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Haider isn't a reformist like Maier, and his only real goal is climbing high enough to usurp the Reich Chancellery and become Germany's sole leader.
  • Foil: To Maier. Both represent the two types of predominant personalities in the Nazi Party: Haider is an ardent Nazi, a populist demagogue, and a delusional opportunist with dreams of ruling Germany as a strongman dictator. Maier is a pragmatist and a technocrat, who cares little for dogma or popularity and wants to provide Germany with effective governance.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: Haider's political positions fluctuate to whatever benefits him, and he is really only out for power.
  • Visionary Villain: Haider is distraught by the incessant power politics that have taken hold of Germania, coming to the realization that the NSDAP has alienated itself from the common man. This leads him into wanting to wipe the slate clean for German politics after taking power.

    Hermann Otto Solms
Role: Reichswirtschaftsministernote  (Potentially)
Party: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - Staatsreformistennote
Ideology: Paternalism
A capable economist and Maier's liberal pick for the RWS, Hermann Otto Solms can become the driving force behind the liberal economic agenda of the State-Reformists. Solms proposes a bold plan to strengthen the Zollverein by integrating the economies of each member state, while proposing aggressive economic liberalizations at home.
  • Head-in-the-Sand Management: Solms wants to aggressively dismantle the Social Market System and integrate Zollverein economies, but all he does is make the German economy more fragile to future shocks. Germany will be totally unprepared to handle the COVID-19 Pandemic, the resulting recession leaving thousands of Germans unemployed and lacking any sort of safety net. Additionally, his budget cuts will worsen Germany's decaying infrastructure, leading to the Sinking of the Volkshalle.
  • Internal Reformist: One of the more integral figures of the State-Reformist faction, Solms is an advocate of economic liberalism and will try to repair the German economy by balancing the budget and carrying out privatizations.
  • Only Sane Man: Solms is the only man in Maier's cabinet who is secretly opposed to Nazism.
  • Number Two: As minister of the economy, Solms is extremely important to Maier's plans and becomes his closest advisor.
  • Resigned in Disgrace: After his reforms fail, Solms will resign from his post in disgrace and retire from politics, acknowledging that he has failed and become a disgrace to Germany.

    Joachim Starbatty
Role: Reichswirtschaftsministernote  (Potentially)
Party: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - Staatsreformistennote
Ideology: Technocratic Nazismnote
Maier's conservative pick for the RWS, Starbatty takes a more careful approach to reforming the German economy, strengthening the Reichsmark and attempting to control spending without jeopardizing the German economy or the Social Market.
  • Number Two: Like Solms, Starbatty's position makes him the closest to Maier in government.

    Friedrich Merz
Role: Reichswirtschaftsministernote  (Solms' Resignation)
Party: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - Merz-Gruppenote
Ideology: Conservatism
Solms' successor as Reich Minister of the Economy, Merz is secretly an opponent of the Nazi regime and will use his position to urge Maier into enacting political reforms, at first to weaken the power of the party, but ending with Germany on the path to democratization.
  • Allohistorical Allusion: Merz's role is similar to that of Alexander Yakovlev in OTL. The same way Yakovlev was an anti-communist who influenced Gorbachev into dismantling the Soviet system, Merz is an anti-fascist who pressures Maier into distancing Germany from Nazism.
  • Internal Reformist: Merz wants to expand the liberalization of the German economy into the field of politics, making him one of the more genuine reformists within the NSDAP.

     Reinhard Günzel
Role: Chef des Oberkommandos der Wehrmachtnote
Ideology: Stratocratic Nazismnote
A loyal follower of National Socialism and the strict commander of the Wehrmacht, Günzel has spent most of his life fighting the enemies of Germany in the treacherous East. Now, he finds himself leading the Wehrmacht under a government that has, in his eyes, become weak and decadent.
  • Evil Reactionary: Günzel believes Germany has become weak and degenerate because of Speer, and is one of the only characters who yearns for something closer to the Hitlerite status quo.
  • General Ripper: Günzel is a brutal and ruthless commander, not only just allowing but encouraging the Wehrmacht into carrying out war crimes against the Caucasian insurgents to "break their spirits".
  • Old Soldier: Günzel is one of the oldest generals in the Wehrmacht, and has taken part in several anti-partisan operations in Russia as well as the Second West Russian War and, more recently, the Caucasus War.
  • Treacherous Advisor: In the failstate path, Günzel becomes disgruntled with Maier's approach to the Caucasian War and actively works to sabotage Maier.

    Alexander Wolf
Role: Staatssekretär im Reichsauswärtigen Amtnote
Party: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - Staatsreformistennote
Ideology: Technocratic Nazismnote
Unremarkable but experienced, Alexander Wolf is Maier's State Secretary, working to advance German interests abroad and dutifully following Maier's orders.
  • Boring, but Practical: There is nothing special about Alexander Wolf, and his name is largely unknown to the public and even the party itself. However, he has years of experience on record and is a competent minister.
  • Realpolitik: While the Reich's approach to foreign policy is ultimately decided by Maier himself, Wolf favors a more pragmatic approach focusing on soft power and subversive activities over aggressive militarism and diplomatic confrontations.
  • The Spock: Wolf is an extremely practical man, not allowing himself to be driven by emotions and willing to take extreme approaches so long as they suit German interests.
  • Workaholic: Wolf is a hard worker, having dedicated most of his life to his job at the Reich Foreign Office. As Maier's top diplomat, Wolf still carries his work ethic, making him one of the more experienced members of the cabinet.

German Intelligence

     Hans-Georg Maaßen
Role: Präsident of Reichsnachrichtendienst
Ideology: Securocracynote
The President of the Reich Intelligence Service (RNS), in charge of Germany's subversive operations at home and overseas.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Maaßen believes the United States is a nation run by a "Jewish mafia", and Germany is the only nation in the world that is free from Jewish influence.
  • Irony: In our timeline, Maaßen was the head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the main body responsible for suppressing extremist activities in Germany. Here, he is the head of the central intelligence service for a contemporary Nazi state.
  • The Spymaster: Maaßen leads the RNS, Germany's sole intelligence service.
