The Renegade Rangers

     Asole

Asole Dusbarg

Voiced by: Ontarioku (The Ranger's Challenge PT. 1)
Race: Tiefling
Class: Blood Hunter (Lycan)

Being the son of the Hemoarloch's local champion, Colonel Cardiock, has afforded Asole a life of privilege and an ego just as vast. While his unfortunate name reflects his temperament and he's often much too concerned about his appearance, Asole is an effective leader and tactician, whose skills have earned him the begrudging respect of Passione—especially Osra, who Asole has known since his childhood years. He knows that he's good, and he takes on the Champion's Challenge in hopes that everyone across Grandure can recognize that notion themselves.

  • Honor Before Reason: Asole regards his honor—be it for his team or his family—exceptionally highly. He uses this same sense of honor to justify withholding help from Passione on occasion. In "The Ranger Challenge PT. 2," Osra asks to borrow some of the Ranger's T. Rex hide to forge some better equipment, as their next quarry is likely a powerful dragon. Even though Osra explicitly states that she wants to share the hide, Asole firmly declines; no matter the circumstances, he would never give his sworn rivals such a huge advantage. Osra is left stewing in a rage, something that Asole savors just before he turns in for the night.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Asole thinks extremely highly of himself, and he's not shy to admit as much, especially towards Osra and her party. However, for all his bravado, he is ultimately a good person, and he holds immense respect for his rivals.
    • In "The Ranger Challenge Pt. 2," he knowingly withholds some T. Rex hide from Osra despite it potentially being of help to her in preparation for a dragon hunt the next day. However, he does allow Dexter to accompany Passione—with a firm warning that Osra will answer to him should Dexter be killed.
    • After the events of "Silent Knife, Deadly Knife," Osra begins suspecting that Asole's father hired an assassin to take out Calum. When she gets a chance to confront Asole about her concerns in "Precarious Politics," she explicitly approaches him not as his rival, but as his long-time friend, a notion that Asole readily reciprocates. While he's not thrilled about Osra's accusations, he recognizes where she's coming from—he's just as worried about Calum's well-being as her. After Asole passionately asserts his father's innocence, Osra feels secure and vulnerable enough to begin discussing her family's tiefling curse and how much it's affecting her. At this, Asole relates his own experiences as a full-blooded tiefling and firmly assures Osra that she has what it takes to make things right.
  • The Rival:
    • As leaders of their respective parties, Asole serves as Osra's rival throughout The Champion's Challenge. His superiority complex and constant desire to provoke her have rubbed Osra the wrong way since their childhoods, which Osra herself reveals to Taini in "Old Flame, New Blood."
    • Asole serves as Calum's rival whenever Passione and the Renegade Rangers duel, as both are their teams' expert swordsmen. Their first duel is shown in "The Ranger Challenge PT. 1.," and it appears to be a very close match.
  • Super Mode: As a Lycan Blood Hunter, Asole can turn into a humongous wolfman with a far bulkier build than his normal form. Despite his newfound size, Asole's swordsmanship does not deteriorate. The first time in which this form is demonstrated is in "Old Flame, New Blood" during a duel with Calum. It ultimately gives him the advantage, and he emerges victorious.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Asole wishes to be the one to defeat Passione, and loathes someone else having the opportunity to do so.
  • Unfortunate Names: The components of Asole Dusbarg's name are phonetically similar to "Asshole Douchebag," a deliberate choice by Alex to reflect his temperament. The characters in The Champion's Challenge tend to pick up on the similarity and comment on it.
    • Jet uses Asole's name to insult him in a tournament that their teams participated in, a moment discussed in "The Ranger Challenge PT. 1's" recap segment. The same segment also shows that, after the tournament, Jet took Asole aside and apologized to him for this insult.
[At night, Asole is preparing to leave. Jet appears and gestures for him.]
Jet: Hey, Asole... I'm sorry I called you an asshole.
[Asole silently turns to face Jet. After considering the apology for a moment, he turns back around.]
Asole: I'm sorry for being one...
[A stunned, blushing Jet silently stares back at Asole.]
    • Cera is the next person to comment on Asole's name in "Silent Knife, Deadly Knife." After helping Calum defend himself against an assassin, the party begins speculating about who could've targeted Calum. Osra cites Colonel Cardiock, Asole's father, as a potential suspect, but Calum has his doubts. To lighten the mood, Cera jokingly suggests a point to support Osra's suspicions: that it was Cardiock who named Asole.
Cera: Okay, [Calum says] it's not possible. But consider: [Cardiock] named his kid 'Asole,' and his last name is very close to 'douchebag.' The man is an embodiment of hate! Only someone full of spite would do something so cruel as to name their kid something so close to 'asshole' when their last name is so close to 'douchebag.'

     Fergus

Fergus Forgaruse

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_fergus.png

Voiced by: Sarge Ray (The Ranger's Challenge PT. 1)
Race: Firbolg
Class: Trickery Cleric

While he's not necessarily evil, few of Grandure's residents can think of anything redeeming about Fergus. He loves to screw with people, having fully embraced his skills as a trickery cleric in order to do so, and he's unendingly smug and patronizing—even towards most of his teammates. The sole exception is Asole, who Fergus swore loyalty to before his Champion's Challenge journey, and who is the one person who can keep his snobbish ways in check.

  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: The comedy/drama faces that decorate Fergus' armor, mace, and shield are quite appropriate given the theatrical aspects he brings to his combat.
  • Butt-Monkey: Absolutely nobody within Passione can resist shit-talking the snooty Fergus; though he can eventually pay them back with some trickery magic, he almost never has a good verbal comeback in the moment. "The Dark Magician of Fraygle Coast" sees many of Passione's members ganging up on him for making a haughty comment about Calum's grammar. He ultimately gets back at the party later upon transforming most of them into cows, however... But they immediately get their revenge by rampaging about town and pinning the damages on his tab so he can pay for them.
[Passione and the Renegade Rangers meet up at a Lordpact bar.]
Calum: [To Asole] Ah, it seems you're getting a bit sauced early today!
Asole: Eh, what can I say? We're celebrating! We got the challenge done today!
Calum: Hm! So... How did it went?
    Cera: 'How did it went?'
[Calum shushes Cera; Fergus turns his attention to him with a snarky remark at the ready. Out of universe, the other players chuckle.]
Calum: [resignedly] ... How did it go.
Fergus: Absolutely splendid use of grammar there, young man.
Ophelia: Excuse me. I don't think that we asked you.
Cera: Fergus, for your own sake, just assume that we're never talking to you, and keep your trap shut.
Calum: No no no, it's fine! Asole let him have his balls for the day! It's fine!
Ash: I can address a cow directly if I wanna address a cow directly; I just don't feel like I need cream in my coffee right now.
Calum: I don't think it's a cow at the end of the day; I think it's a giant pile of bullshit. But that's just me.
    [Ash busts out laughing.]
Osra: I'm so proud of my friends~!!
[Calum joins in with a guffaw.]
Fergus: [seething] First off, not all firbolgs are cows, thank you very much!
    Ash: Just you.
    Fergus: That's racist!
Ophelia: See, here's the thing: we don't need to hear anything about your family history, considering...
Cera: Not all Firbolgs are giant assholes, too, yet you're still the exception.
Calum: Which leads me to the next response, um: we didn't care.
  • Condescending Compassion: The recap segment of "The Ranger Challenge PT. 1" reveals why Passione hates Fergus so much. At one point during a fighter's tournament, Passione starts to struggle, and the onlooking Asole fears that he won't get an opportunity to defeat them himself. Fergus decides to assuage his leader's fears by interfering with the match with his trickery magic, giving Passione the advantage and allowing them to win. When word gets out about Fergus' manipulations, Passione feels absolutely demoralized. Not only did they not win that fight under their own power, but they know the additional intent behind Fergus' actions: he wanted to assert his party's superiority over them before allowing Asole the opportunity to do it again later.
  • Hate Sink: Fergus is constantly played up to be as unlikable as possible, thanks to his smug, condescending personality and his tricky moveset. The players of The Champion's Challenge never pass up an opportunity to talk smack about him, which Crafty reveals that he fully expects (and encourages) in "Old Flame, New Blood."
  • Jerkass: Fergus is flat-out unpleasant to almost everyone he meets; apart from Asole, he only goes slightly easier on his own party, and he holds absolutely no respect for Passione at all.
    • When Passione approaches the Renegade Rangers for help in "The Ranger Challenge PT. 2," Fergus takes Asole aside and speaks ill of his rivals. Thanks to their past experience with him, every member of Passione immediately detects that Fergus is badmouthing them based on his body language alone.
[Passione's members have a disorganized conversation about poisons. Asole watches from afar while an unimpressed Fergus leans in towards him.]
Fergus: [whispering] M'lord, do we really have to associate with these peons? Look at them, squabbling like animals!
Osra: [overhearing Fergus] You don't get shit! No scales for you; fuck off!
Boonslayer OOC: I'd like to imagine all five of us are just flipping him off as he's leaning over—just him specifically! Hehehehe!
    • The Rangers finally catch up with Passione in Lordpact during "Precarious Politics," and most of them stay at the same inn as their rivals. Fergus is an exception; he deems his party's inn as too low-class for someone like him, so he instead books a stay at something fancier a good distance away. He happens across Ophelia dining there, and when he explains his reasoning, he regards his party with disdain for their inn of choice. Ophelia, having just about enough of Fergus, viciously dresses him down for his selfishness and how he treats his teammates, even calling him out for projecting his daddy issues after he pompously reveals them. Unable to think of a good comeback, a humiliated Fergus just leaves for his room.

     Dexter

Dexter Steele

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_2dexter.png

Voiced by: TheArashi (The Ranger's Challenge PT. 1)
Race: Warforged
Class: Rogue (Scout)

  • Amazon Chaser: The recap comic of "Disarmed and a Leg" shows sparks flying around Dexter's head as he witnesses Ash deal the final blow on Barry, clearly enamored by her combat ability. Notably, it's the first time in which Dexter shows emotion past stern stoicism.
  • Do Androids Dream?: When Osra and Taini meet to exchange materials from their respective hunts in "Old Flame, New Blood," they observe Dexter asleep in his hunting spot. This prompts the players to briefly discuss out of character whether Warforges are capable of dreaming.
  • Guns Akimbo: Dexter's default artwork depicts him dual-wielding crossbows, his signature weapons.
  • Nice Guy: While rather withdrawn, Dexter is consistently one of the most cordial and mild-mannered Rangers. Whenever he passes by Passione, he always politely greets them with a tip of his hat—to everyone, not just Ash, the Passione member that he has feelings for. He's also extremely cooperative with the party when they recruit him to help hunt a dragon in "Disarmed and a Leg."

     Taini

Taini Marshalots

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_2taini.png

Voiced by: Mirishalyn (The Ranger's Challenge PT. 1)
Race: Loxodon
Class: Monk (Drunk Master)

  • Amazon Chaser: After "The Ranger Challenge PT. 1" establishes Osra's crush on Taini, "PT. 2" reveals that the feeling is mutual. Both admire each others' strength and kindness and have the healthiest relationship among the dynamics between Passione and the Renegade Rangers. Taini tends to be extremely shy about her crush, however; it takes a great deal of courage for her to hug and kiss Osra in "Old Flame, New Blood," and when she's finished, she hurries off in flustered embarrassment.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Taini is the largest member of her team, in stature and in musculature. She's also quite attractive, and quickly garners Osra's attention as a romantic partner.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Normally, Taini is too timid to want to harm anyone. Then she takes a few swigs from her booze-holding-staff and she shows you just how good she is at being a monk.
  • Improbable Weapon User: In addition to her fists, Taini's weapon of choice is a concrete pillar that's taller than she is. It's where she stores her booze for battle, and it makes for a handy bludgeon. "Old Flame, New Blood" demonstrates that her strikes with it can be frighteningly quick, as a badly battered Ophelia can attest to.
  • Shrinking Violet: Taini is painfully timid among others and is deeply aware of it. Even around Osra she finds it difficult to open up, though she makes progress throughout the series. When she meets Ophelia in "Old Flame, New Blood" and realizes that she, too, is socially anxious, she is relieved and adorably excited to find someone who can relate to her with this issue.
  • Token Good Teammate: The Renegade Rangers consist of aloof, elitist, dickish, or, at worst, unhinged warriors; Taini is the sole exception. While a fierce Drunken Master in a fight, she's otherwise a quiet, sweet person, whose only real issue is who she associates herself with. Osra develops a crush on Taini very early into the campaign, and "The Ranger Challenge PT. 2" confirms that her feelings are reciprocated. Before heading to bed at Forrnest's inn, an extremely nervous Taini gives Osra a quick hug, leaving her filled with astonished glee.

     Unda

Unda Vahta

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_1unda.png

Race: Triton
Class: Sorcerer (Draconic)

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: While they're open to dating each other, Unda likes to banter a bit with Calum, who generally takes her crass remarks in stride. The first taste of their dynamic comes in "The Ranger Challenge PT. 2," during which their respective parties meet up at Forrnest's inn.
    [Calum approaches Unda.]
    Calum: ... How're you?
Unda: Ey, sugah-tits! How're ya doin'?
    Calum: Doin' fine!
    [Hiten busts out laughing.]
Hiten OOC: Correct! Yeah, no, just Osra, outloud, just nods, "Correct."
Calum: I was wondering once this is all said and done... Would you like to go out for a drink sometime?
    Unda: You buyin'?
Calum: I mean, obviously, you don't want to... so...
    Unda: No. Pay in advance.
    Calum: I'm not that easy.
    [Calum returns to his party.]
  • Ms. Fanservice: Though she's wearing a robe, Unda never has it properly closed, leaving only some starfish to cover her breasts.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Unda's draconic blood makes her a rather unbalanced person. She's able to hold herself together most of the time, but few people are willing to test her limits. In "Old Flame, New Blood," Taini outright admits to Osra that her fellow Rangers have Unda around to keep themselves on her good side; they really don't someone so unpredictable and powerful coming after them.
