Captain Cervantes Custer

Voiced & Played by: Crafty
Race: Centaur
Class:

Captain Cervantes Custer is the champion of Joughstic, while also doubling as the head of the town's defense team. He is very concerned about a monstrous windmill nearby, but no one takes him seriously because of how absurd such an idea would be. Passione hesitantly agrees to help ease his concerns, if for now reason than because it would prevent Cervantes from being distracted from his part in the Champion's Challenge... And it turns out that he was right all along.
  • Cassandra Truth: Not unlike the knight he was based on, Cervantes feels apprehensive about a local windmill terrorizing Joughstic for quite some time. Nobody believes him due to the absurdity of such an idea, but it's such a big deal to him that he postpones his challenge until the threat is resolved. The recap segment of "The Ranger Challenge PT. 1" reveals that Cervantes' concerns were no joke: the windmill he's had his eye on is indeed a monster—more specifically, a gargantuan mimic. After he and Passione slay the beast, he initiates his challenge for them the next day. When Qwill hears about the incident in "PT. 2," he's utterly flabbergasted, dreading to hear about Cervantes' vindication the next time the Grandure champions hold a meeting.
  • Warm-Up Boss: Being the first Champion of the Champion's Challenge, Cervantes' challenge is the simplest compared to the ones coming next: it's merely a straightforward fight against him. The recap segment of "The Ranger Challenge PT. 1" implies that the Challenge was over rather quickly thanks to Passione's combined efforts.

     Qwill

Qwill Hox, the Hunter Champion

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_2qwill_hox.png
Voiced & Played by: Crafty
Race: Aarokocra
Class:

Qwill is the Hunter Champion of Forrnest. While a vigilant warrior who will fight tooth and nail to protect others, he can be a little condescending. He's struggling to cope with a loss from his past—and despite his obvious distress, he refuses to let himself mourn, let alone allow others to help him do so.
  • Break the Haughty: Throughout the Ranger Challenge Arc, Qwill is quite prideful of his abilities and status as a champion. He patronizes Passione a bit and laughs in their faces over their curses and other mishaps. However, while he doesn't face severe repercussions for his behavior, a few key events nevertheless cause him to mellow out completely, causing him to see Passione more favorably than how he started.
    • In "The Ranger Challenge PT. 1," after taking some damage during the Wood Woad confrontation—his prosthetic leg being especially hurt—Qwill becomes a bit more forgiving towards Passione. He later assures his challengers that his assistance with the Woads doesn't count against them in any way, as they weren't part of the challenge and he wasn't prepared to deal with them. Just before everyone turns in for the night, he, in his own way, earnestly tells the party members that he's proud of them. He also opts to stay up and keep watch for their sake, and when he thinks he's alone, he laments how he's treated Passione... But when he realizes that Ash overheard him, he tries to keep up appearances.
Qwill: Yeah, that one? That one was on me. So I'm not gonna count that one as a failure on any of y'all... You kids fared pretty good back there, though!
      [...]
[Everyone turns in for the night as Qwill stands watch. Once he thinks they're asleep, he speaks aloud to himself.]
Qwill: *Sigh*... Those kids... maybe I was too rough on 'em...
[Qwill suddenly senses that he's being watched, and he slowly turns to glare at Ash, who is giving him a knowing look from her resting spot.]
Qwill: ... Y'know, salt in the wound ain't exactly a good thing.
Ash: [cheekily] I mean... it's only warranted after earlier's salt.
Qwill: In mah defense, your buddies there? They are hilarious.
      Ash: Well, I mean, yeah...
[Ash props herself up from the ground and continues gazing at Qwill with concern in her eyes.]
Ash: You sure everything's okay? Things have been... different since I've come back.
Qwill: I don't know why you keep askin'; I'm fine.
    • Passione earns their next Challenge Emblem from Qwill and returns to the Forrnest Hunting Guild in "The Ranger Challenge PT. 2." After they arrive, Mori unexpectedly visits... with a bouquet of flowers for Qwill to help mourn his old, fallen hunting team. Qwill does not take the gesture well at all, as he's refused to let himself grieve and has been bottling up his emotions for the longest time. With his personal issues now on full display, he drops his cool demeanor and lashes out at anyone who approaches him, actively pushing Mori and Passione back when they try getting him to see reason. This motivates Mori to task the party with retrieving Qwill's teammates' lost weaponry from the beast that killed them and possibly avenging their deaths in doing so.
    • When Passione retrieves Qwill's team's weaponry from the beast that killed them and returns them to him, Qwill finally allows himself to mourn in "Disarmed and a Leg." Cradling the crossbow of not just his former hunting partner, but his blood relative, Qwill screams to the heavens and works all of the grief out of his system. He's incredibly thankful for Passione's help, being greatly humbled by their efforts; now that he's finally made peace with his old team's deaths, he decides to retire from being a Ranger. Qwill first reveals his decision to Ash, and as further thanks for her help, he gifts her his signature bow to assist her and her team on their journey.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Qwill's titular "Ranger Challenge" demonstrates to the players that not every Champion's Challenge will be a straight-on fight like Cervantes' was. This one is instead a hunt for a particular quarry, who the participants either kill or tame. The difficulty of the challenge varies depending on whichever path the participants choose, but it always involves hiking past various natural obstacles, requiring careful teamwork and some optional, limited help from Qwill himself in order to reach their destination. Passione struggles at various points in the challenge, but ultimately succeeds, only reluctantly taking up Qwill's help once when they see no other option to progress past a ravine.
