Ask the Tropers:
openDarkseid as an Adaptational Nice Guy Film
In the character page for Apokolips, Darkseid has an entry for Adaptational Nice Guy with the following context:
"If you can believe it! Normally, Darkseid is utterly intolerant of losing, and will often take out his rage on his underlings who failed him. And if not his underlings, then anyone who happens to be nearby. He will also try to get in one last parting shot if he knows he's beaten (see Dan Turpin's fate in Superman: The Animated Series). Not to mention, he also does not tolerate being questioned, even by his advisorsnote The DCAU version of Desaad met his end after laying into Darkseid for making a bad decision to attack Highfather. Here, however, when Steppenwolf's severed head is sent through the boomtube and the heroes stare him down, he calmly lets the boomtube close without making a move, and when Desaad seemingly gloats that he told Darkseid that Steppenwolf would fail, Darkseid acknowledges Desaad's words, before simply ordering that an armada be readied instead."
I have to ask: is this really valid? To me, this comes off as Adaptational Pragmatic Villainy or something. This is the same thing that happened when the Superman from the DC Animated Universe was labelled an Adaptational Wimp simply because he wasn't as astronomically powerful as comic book Superman or when the Batman from the DC Extended Universe was labelled an Adaptational Dumbass simply because he wasn't a borderline-omniscient super-genius as comic book Batman. What do you say?
openAwesome music subpage? Music
Hey guys, what are the rules for awesome music subpages? I want to make one for Depeche Mode.
openWhat does the blue question mark mean?
I noticed it next to one of my edits and several others. I want to know what it means.
openMultiple entries for the same character on character sheet
Is it kosher for the same character to have multiple entries on a work's character sheet, each pertaining to different circumstances in which this character appears? I was under the impression that tropes for a character should only be listed under one entry.
openComplaining on arrowverse pages. Live Action TV
So the troper iamnoone is writing massive rants to bash the various arrowverse shows for basically not being a one to one of the comics.
this edit amounts to large texts of They changed now it sucks in constant paragraphs, here they speculated on one entry calling Marc Guggenheim a liar with out proof and also did a long complaint bashing both verses, this entry is also really bashy and quite a few more.
This was reported before but they have continued. Since then without stopping.
openBTVS removal in "Hostility On The Set" Live Action TV
Nerae removed the Buffy examples in Hostility on the Set here without reason, which Vox Aquila readded, but then Nerae removed them again without explanation. While I personally find that the entry could be trimmed down since its getting a bit long, I don't think it should be removed entirely especially without any reason given and I don't want this to devolve into an edit war.
openHololive Anime titles change?
Ano Baka Desu changed the titles of several of the group's anime shorts from what they were originally called on hololive. These are the titles given to the episodes in these promotional tweets. For instance, they changed the episode the Youtube thumbnail calls The Perfect Cover Up to To The Sky. I think we should revert to what they're called on Youtube, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts?
openEiyuden Chronicles page cut Videogame
The page to Eiyuden Chronicles, an upcoming video game funded on Kickstarter and the Spiritual Successor to Suikoden series was cut for considered being a stub. There were entries in the page, but someone decided that it was troping an unreleased work and hid the entries. I can't find any discussion about hiding the entries and cutting the page now.
Can we get the original page somehow, at least just to archive it off-site, if troping about the unreleased game is restricted? I just want to have the entries already written there ready on release date if that's the case.
There is already gameplay footage and release date on the KS page, if it's a must. I am in impression that it was okay with those requirements, just like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.
openIs it true that you can't play with YMMV tropes?
I've seen several people say this, however, neither of the pages about playing with tropes say anything about it (As far as I can tell). Plus, some of the trope pages for YMMV tropes have a "playing with" page, so which is it?
openWMG page that unabashedly disregards ROCEJ
I thought the WMG entry I brought up yesterday was bad. The WMG page I came across today make that one seem tame by comparison, and there's a lot more than just one entry. Examples include:
- Hoping the entire cast will die, then being disappointed when they don't (this is only the first entry).
- Calling the people who work on the show Trolling Creators who are making people sick of MTV's Network Decay even madder.
- Numerous theories as to what species Snookie belongs tonote such as half goblin, part tangerine, and a hybrid of Amy Winehouse and a pumpkin.
- Accusing the show of being a Batman Gambit to make sure that aliens don't invadenote The entry states that if aliens watched the show, they would consider the entire human race to be already on the road to wiping itself out (and therefore not worth invading in the first place).
As divisive as it is, Jersey Shore is still a Reality TV show, which makes these entries all the more insane.
Edited by Shadow8411openYMMV page turned into self-demonstrating
Recently, the YMMV page for Darkseid was completely rewritten to be from his POV. I'm pretty sure this was done because he recently got his own Self-Demonstrating page and the YMMV was changed as a result.
However, we've been trying to stop self-demonstrating writing from leaking to the subpages (such as the clean-up we had for Deadpool). Since this is recent enough, can we get a page revert to how it was a few days ago?
openOlder younger character
A character in a prequel is portrayed by the same actor but actually looks older than in the original. Think Don Eladio in Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul or even Mike and Saul/Jimmy
openNo Title Film
Earlier this year, Vanilla Flare added this to Children's Party at the Palace under Broken Aesop:
Although Burglar Bill claims that every great story needs a great villain, several masterpieces (My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies as good examples) have No Antagonist, which contradicts his Aesop. Whilst it is true that a good story cannot exist without an established conflict, a good story can exist without a "man vs man" conflict. Apparently the storybook characters never seen what Studio Ghibli makes.
It was removed a few days ago for not being an example.
Not long after, Vanilla Flare added it to the YMMV page, this time under Critical Research Failure.
Sorry if this isn't really important...
openMata Nui's character arc Film
Troper Kirby 0189 added Mata Nui's character arc to They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot in the YMMV page of BIONICLE, with the following context:
"Mata Nui's character arc in 2009's The Legend Reborn direct to DVD movie has some interesting potential. Having been betrayed by the leader of a rogue faction of nanomachines who were supposed to help regulate his giant mecha body in part because Mata Nui was too busy exploring the cosmos to figure out how to repair the shattered pieces of Spherus Magna as per his designated purpose by the Great Beings, you would think his crash landing onto an alien Mad Max-like culture and being a Fish out of Water with nothing to his name would have served for some solid character development with him learning to befriend those usually beneath him, which would be especially interesting given that Bara Magna had been set up as the inverse of the Matoran Universe. Instead, Mata Nui is already a Nice Guy and almost immediately finds allies to rather easily unite the tribes against the Skrall, with his former status as a Physical God being used mostly for brief mentions here and there rather than part of his struggle."
I have to ask: is this valid? Mata Nui is the main character and, by definition, he can't be wasted. What do you think?
openStrawman Has a Point in Godzilla King of the Monsters 2019 Film
Troper Derv0s B 2 added this to Strawman Has a Point in the YMMV page of Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019):
"A surprising number of viewers reacted this way to the government's Gotta Kill 'Em All demands regarding the Titans. Said viewers argue that while the ending proves The Extremist Was Right, with what little the human race knows about the Titans at the film's start, the demand comes off as highly understandable. Of course, this argument ignores the fact that Monarch have already established before the film's start that the Titans are ecologically essential, and that the government are basically getting it into their heads that they somehow know better than the professional Titan experts."
I think the fact that the entry argues with itself disqualifies it for the trope. What do you say?
openDo you agree with this?
What are your thoughts on the page for the short film Detainment? I kind of have mixed feelings about this page; it's a very good description of the film and all the tropes that come into play (I actually did some editing on it and added new tropes) but I kind of feel like because it is based on a very notorious and scary Real Life event it is kind of disrespectful to James Bulger's family. What do you think? Here is the link to the page: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Film/Detainment
Edited by HeraldopenRaya and the Last Dragon - Villain has a Point Western Animation
This has been added and removed by various tropers, the most recent of which is rva98014:
- Villain Has a Point: Downplayed. Namaari isn't a villain so much as she is the story's antagonist, but towards the climax, she's not wrong when she soberly points out two things. First, she tells Raya that while Sisu was the bigger person and bothered to trust Namaari, the disasterous outcome happened because Raya didn't trust Sisu's judgement nor anyone else. Second, although Namaari bringing a crossbow played a part in Sisu's Disney Death, Raya causing the misfire technically makes it Raya's fault as well.
For some context, the hero accidentally causes a crossbow bolt to kill a supporting character who could have saved the world. The person who she made accidentally shoot said character blames her, and the animation supports this.
Can we get a consensus, here? For the record, I really do think it was solely Namaari's fault, but it's not supported in the movie itself, and Word of God hasn't said anything on if both characters were in the right/wrong.

jamesalan added a link to an unofficial web port of Five Nights at Freddy's (hosted on y9freegames.com) on the Five Nights at Freddy's Franchise page. This edit strikes me as a bit odd because:
I removed the link since it was out-of-place, but this incident makes the whole y9freegames site seem suspicious to me. The troper added another link to that site on Happy Wheels, which I'm not sure if it's OK or not.
