Go To

This is a wick check for Evil Genius, to see if it's distinct enough from other tropes, like Mad Scientist and The Chessmaster, and to see if it's attracting zero-context examples.

Wicks checked: 66/66

Correct: Explains evilness and genius, not overlapping with The Chessmaster, Mad Scientist, or any other suitable. (5)

  • Hydra: Complete Monster: The Gorgon, born Tomi Shishido, was a Child Prodigy of dizzying ability who, at a young age, founded the mutant supremacist group called the Dawn of White Light that launched multiple, brutal terrorist attacks across Japan that claimed many innocent lives. when he was eighteen, he joined the Hand, slaughtering his own family to show he had no ties elsewhere. Shishido, now called the Gorgon for his mutant ability to turn humans to stone with a look, captured Wolverine and brainwashed him into a killing machine that claimed many innocent lives, and the lives of heroes such as Northstar. When deprogrammed, Wolverine killed the Gorgon, who was later resurrected. The Gorgon quickly took a leadership role in Hydra, eventually ousting Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, and revealed a disturbing habit of turning innocent women into stone as decorations for his chambers.
  • The Phantom of the Opera: The Grotesque: The Narrator lampshades in the Epilogue that Erik, with an ordinary face, would have been one of the most distinguished of mankind, due in no small part to his artistic and engineering skill. However, Erik is vindictive towards the humanity that rejected him, he holds human life at no value, and his act of mercy surprised even him..
  • Starshine Legacy: Unlike Sabine and Jessica who prefers act instead of thinking, she came up with a well-thought plan on how to get Tin-Can and she managed to hold a child in hostage much longer than they did.
  • Classical Mythology: Mortals and Demigods: She's very clever, resorting to elaborate tactics and manipulation to achieve her goals, and assuring a way out for herself before unleashing her revenge.
  • The City Without Memory: He is very shrewd, figuring out Alice is much smarter than she looks at once, and he is behind the Malicious Slander spread about the rememberers. He also can read.

Maybe correct: Example is a Mad Scientist, which may be a more specific form of Evil Genius (12)

Maybe correct: Example is a Chessmaster, which may be a more specific form of Evil Genius (3)

  • Superpowered Evil Side: If Angel loses his soul (due to the lingering effects of a Gypsy Curse), he becomes the brilliant and formidable Angelus, widely reputed to be the most vicious vampire in history. As Cordelia Chase once queried about Angelus's evident genius compared to his heroic alter ego's, "...what is it about evil that jacks up the I.Q. points?" More emphasis on the evil, though.
  • The Witcher - Vilgefortz's Conspiracy: The intellectually inclined, schemer and part-time evil mastermind among the bad guys. (Also partial-context - makes claims, but doesn't expand on them)
  • Fire Emblem Fates: Complete Monster: Iago, the right-hand tactician of King Garon of Nohr, excels at sorcery and illusions. In Birthright, he tries to instigate a feud between Corrin and the Wind Tribe by disguising some of the tribalists as Faceless to be killed. Later, he cruelly attacks Flora despite being in the wrong, tries to have Corrin and their group digested alive by a resurrected Fort Dragonfall, and is implied to be behind Takumi's aggressive state. In Conquest, fueled by nothing more than contempt for Corrin, he constantly tries to get the heroes slain, including a Faceless ambush in the Woods of the Forlorn and telling the warring Hoshidans where they'll be. In one notable instance, a Faceless tries to attack Corrin, but this results in Lilith's demise instead; Iago remarks he never liked her anyway. Finally, his dislike reaches the point where he outright attacks Corrin at the end of the route in front of the Nohrian siblings, going against his own king's initial orders. Manipulative and cruel, nobody approved of Iago's actions, and even the peace-loving Corrin wanted him dead.

Maybe correct: Example overlaps with a different "Evil Genius"-type trope. (3)

ZCE: Explains evil in some form or another, but doesn't explain genius (2)

  • That Mitchell and Webb Look: No OSHA Compliance: Deconstructed with the Evil Genius trying to persuade a contractor to disregard the impracticalities of his plans.
Muahahaha! Forgive my levity, Mister Cooch, but when you come to know me better, you will find that neither Health nor Safety are among my primary concerns...
  • Hellsing: Millennium Nazis: He's the one responsible for turning the Nazi army into a Nazi Vampire army and most likely turning the Major into a cyborg.

ZCE: Explains genius in some form or another, but doesn't explain evil (13)

  • Romancing SaGa 2: Bokhohn basically weaseled his way into the group. The man is extremely crafty and an amazing politician.
  • Himitsu Sentai Gorenger: A brilliant tactician and inventor who commands his own fortress.
  • Flander's Company: Well, of course. He does contribute to the resolution of the rift problem, with the help of Jean-Luc Shredder.
  • Westworld: Main: The seemingly unfettered and undisputed mastermind of Westworld, an actual hell for the Hosts. He intellectually dwarfs anyone around him with ease.
  • Necromancer Characters:
    • He's a cult leader and a skilled conjuror, as well as someone sorely lacking in morals. (Evil is partial-context)
    • He's incredibly savvy and patient, being able to hold power long after he obtains it. He's skilled at negotiation along with conquest.
    • While not the smartest character by a long shot, he's still a very skilled tactician, though he pales in comparison due to many of the other demons, who happen to be just even more cunning and strategic than he is.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS - Knights of Hanoi: My be around the same intellect as Baira and Faust, but he emphasizes his intellect compared to the more subdued latter. His entire character revolves around his belief in DNA being the defining quality of someone, and his ability to analyze and counter it.
  • A Fistful of Dollars: He's the only one of the villains who has a clue about Joe, and seems to be the Rojos' planner as well.
  • Ape Escape: His battles always involve one of his own creations.
  • Under Night In-Birth: Later Additions: While Amnesia is not particularly evil, Chaos acts as the brains of the group as Hilda is too busy partying to ever plan things out on her own. He sets up the plans, goes over logistics, thinks about their group's image and reputation, and scouts around to find new recruits.
  • One Piece: Dressrosa: (Partial-context on the Evil side; how is he unpleasant? The second bullet, a part of the same example, seems to contradict this)
    • Dagama seems to amount to this, being a very unpleasant strategist who is not above cheating his way to victory.
    • Later on he proves his strategic prowess in the invasion in Doflamingo's palace where he gathers and commands all of the other combatants to stay on guard to ensure that Luffy can pass safely after they fought Doflamingo's forces with seemingly no cooperation.
  • Pastamonsters The Main Trio: To the Proxies. Slendy's no idiot, but BEN's his computer guy. BEN is incredibly smart, with infinite knowledge of the internet, including the dark web. Comickit once stated BEN is a "living computer".

ZCE: Doesn't explain evilness or genius (52)
